Well that is great news....Josh is a 3 somewhere.....as if we don't have a packed house of 3's already. Some of us frankly in an effort to be kind were saying that at best we had a bunch of 2's, a 4 and 5 before the season started.

While Buch has done a great job in my estimation and has gotten my vote for star of the staff for months now and I have suggested that if he continues to pitch this way, the Sox will have no choice but to elevate him to the staff 1 unless they finally bring somebody in for that role. But at this moment I would rate Buch a 2 although he is the best we have so our 1, Felix our 2, Lester and Becket either the 3 or 4 with both interchangeable at this point and Cook our 5.

The point being we have plenty of 3's and don't need more especially when they are supposed to be our 1 or 2 AND get paid like it.

I was never arguing that Beckett is a 1 or completely deserving of what he's getting paid. I'm just saying that I don't think he's been as bad as a lot of us have made him out to be.

By the way I have already stated in other threads more relevant to the topic that I would not take a bag of bolts for Beckett and I would not agree to pay his salary. if that means we are stuck with him then we are stuck with him.

You do realize that the fact that we are overpaying for so many players that are not performing nearly as well as they should is at least from the overall personnel problem, the biggest problem this team has and is the key element to upper management's unwillingness to commit more money for players. That list includes Beckett.

In most cases I would agree with you on that but look at him start by start. You have two outings in there where he got hammered and there is some evidence to suggest that there is an outlier to explain it. He was pitching on about a 10 day lay off in those cases and he got lit up. I'm leaving the NY start in there because he flat out got his ass kicked and had a s***** day. Most of the time, he's gone out there and given us a chance to win. Has it been Sub 3 ERA 2011 Josh? Not by a long shot but has it been Holy s*** Why This Jackass Still On The Team Josh? I don't think so.

I think we've gotten somewhere in the middle from him which would I think would be a 3 starter or something close to that. Not amazing but not a useless piece of trash that we should just dump to another team for scraps.

I think he is still in the process of adapting his game to no longer being a power pitcher. I think he can make that transition and can remain a useful starter. However, his lack of commitment to conditioning does concern me.

I agree with you 100% that his health this year has been frustrating, no doubt I wish he would stay on the field better than he has. I also just feel that he's done better than he's being given credit for. He had a 4.06 ERA heading into July and a mid 3 when you adjust for what I feel are outliers. I'm not arguing that the guy doesn't have issues. I just feel that those issues pertain more to his health than his actualy performance on the field.

Edit: I also think Josh's performance the next two months will have an impact on how this discussion is viewed at the end of the season. If his era stays around 4.50 then you'd have me on your side but if it goes down to a more respectable number like a low 4 or high 3 then I might be able to gloat a bit ;)

It feels nice finding a middle ground between us for once. Seems like we've been able to do that a bit here :D

We are talking about a guy who saw fit to tell us that family is more important than anything else and that he is no longer as committed to baseball as he was at one time. The importance of family is obvious. Therefore Beckett was not really trying to tell us the obvious. He was telling us what he is willing to do at this point and he walks like he talks.

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck......It is a duck. The work that Greg Maddux put in to make that transition is legendary in baseball. If Josh Beckett is even getting within pissing distance of that, you will be able to knock me over with a feather.

By the way what do we think the aforementioned Mr Beckett will do if and when the time comes when his contract is up and he goes out to eh market pitching like a 3. Will he be willing to take 3 money or will he retire? I would bet retire unless 3 money has been blown so out of proportion by then that he can make what he makes now acknowledged to be a 3.

I think Beckett can make the transition more successfully than Lester, because Beckett has been the more consistent strike thrower throughout his career.

As for the middle ground between us, I usually get there when I stop being a jackass. I am sure that we will still disagree about issues, but with respect for each others opinion. :D

I think I match you in the jackass department pretty well.

Bottom line is we both love this team and can formulate and discuss our different opinions without just pulling stuff out of nowhere and being jerks about it when we don't see eye to eye. It makes for good discussion and dare I say that it seems like we've both gained respect for each other over the last few months and that can only be a good thing moving forward. Let's just stay away from politics, that's really where I turn into a massive *******.

Well the difference between the two I think is that Lester at this stage at least for now still has basically the same stuff and must cure his mechanical issues.

Beckett must have control of location at a level that he has never had before. If he throws 91 MPH FB in the same location he threw 95 MPH FB and even 94 MPH FB, well.....good night Irene. They will likely be flat and fat and right in the middle of the plate from what we have seen.

I actually think Lester has the better chance IF he gets help in the form of a real 1 for him to follow and a pitching coach that can help him cure his mechanical issues. Beckett has already been at this for awhile so I just don't think the issue is time....it is commitment in the form of work and conditioning. Once you fall so far off the wagon that you are telling people you have fallen off the work and conditioning wagon....real hard to come back.

Politics is full of massive *******s on both sides of the aisle. But it's a deal. No politics, unless you start with it.;)

I posted recently that I discovered that I have NESN in my non-HD channels. I turned over during the rain delay and they were playing the Dennis & Callahan show. What a couple of annoying a-holes. They spoke of Beckett like he's a piece of s***. I don't know how anyone can possibly listen to them.

This booing Beckett thing makes all Red Sox fans look like insensitive jackasses. Really, who the hell boos a guy who comes off the field injured? It's embarrassing.

He's an out of shape bum who deserves no respect from Red Sox nation. I've been to two of his games this year, and in one, the Red Sox were already down 4-0 in the second, and 5-0 in the first. It feels like a Dice-k start when he's on the mound, and fans don't deserve that from a guy who could be an ace if he gave a s***.

That's incredible. I'm not even mad, I'm just impressed.

That is only true if one believes he was really injured. Beckett has no credibility. There are very few fans including this one who believes Beckett was injured but rather merely quit on his team just like he did last year.

Hes not injured.

Hes fat and out of shape. This is the time of year that it catches up with you.

I wouldn't be shocked if in reality Beckett just wanted to get out of that situation cause he didn't want to deal with it and "coincidentally" got injured.

OH WELL.

Please stop going to games when Josh Beckett is pitching.

Thanks in advance.

Its pretty clear that Beckett shows a "I don't care" feeling when it comes to pitching (at least here in Boston anyway). But who would take him in a trade?

I don't think they have a clue when he will actually start again. They announced today's game against the twins and left it there all way up until the last minute when he had not actually picked up a baseball since the night he injured his back. They don't have a clue when he will be back I would wager.

What about Beckett for the Phillies' Cliff Lee? aren't they looking to unload him or has that changed?

I mean that'd be great, but there is no way that would possibly happen.

 And maybe I can trade the Radio Flyer hanging from the ceiling in our garage for a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. How much cash should I include in the deal?

No, in all seriousness, I know most people would love that, but given the trajectory of their careers over the last 3-4 seasons there is no way the Phillies make that deal unless Cherington has pictures of their GM making out with a transvestite on a pile of meth, on top of the Holocaust Memorial.

Chances are if Cherington has them, the Phillies GM has them also..
