LaRussa.

Guy does great things with a s***** team. Imagine the possibilities with a team that's capable.

I'm assuming the next manager isn't on this list. Maybe he is but until there is a more significant list (those who are actually interviewing) I'm not going to vote.

LaRussa ain't goin' nowhere. Neither is Duncan.

Better to wait until after the playoffs--to see who's available.

It will be somebody with experience, at least bench coach;

somebody preferably known and media friendly (more important to management than you think),

and somebody who is on the same wavelength as management as to how to fix the Red Sox.

Somebody with Tito's interpersonal skills, but who is tougher with the players and more intense about winning, and more skilled with fundamentals and game managing.

That's a tall order, but these guys are well-paid. Better than most executives.

Gutted that Francona has departed. Not only short memory, but I think it's pretty short sighted, TBH. I would hope that the front office has had specific someone in mind.

How so? Sentimental values means squat in this league. If you're not producing you ain't doing your job. Past accomlishments can only get you so much.

Francona said it himself. That club needed someone new and someone who will get through these players. Apparently players weren't really seeing eye to eye with the man.

Perhaps it was because the players themselves were dumb founded by the decision he made in the last month or so. I mean if we the fans could see how bad he was managing the team. Imagine living that hell as a player knowing he's doing things wrong but cant say or do nothing about it because you cant, as a player overwrite the manager.

Do college coaches make the jump to the pros often- ever? Perhaps someone that has led a solid college for years would be what the tram needs? I would think they would be used to stressing fundamentals. Looks like the gamecocks have had a solid program for a good while. Same manager for 15 years I think I read.

LaRussa's a pipe dream' date=' and I think Torre's done with managing. And none of those other guys appeal to me.[/quote']You are probably right, but he would be my choice. My second choice would be Bobby V.

Cafardo had a ton of names in his column this morning with the Globe.

Maddon's bench coach is a consideration.

It depends on who Henry and Werner like. It also depends on what's in store for Epstein.

My guess Epstein will be dealt with first-quickly. Then the new manager.

I also think the coaching staff will be changed completely. They probably want a clean break--with the clubhouse problems that have surfaced. Under the circumstances, none of the present coaches should be retained. And none should be considered for manager.

Here's one hunch. Anybody who can turn Crawford around will get priority. That could mean somebody from Tampa Bay. They have a boatload of money tied up in that guy.

Riggleman? Great call there, let's have an entitled, whiny manager to go with the entitled, whiny players we have.

Ken Macha might be the closest thing to a real replacement going. He did well with the A's back when they were good.` I don't think Valentine's going to happen, although I have no true reason why, just a hunch. But he's a type A personality who won't want a front office telling him how to do things, and I got the feeling that this is a front office that likes to get its hands dirty.

My top two candidates would be Tony Pena and Dave Martinez. Either one would be an outstanding choice IMO. Pena has managerial experience and did well with the Royals until the front office f***ed up his roster enough that he couldn't win consistently. That won't be a problem here.

Martinez hasn't managed, but he always seems to make good decisions with regard to the bullpen when Maddon gets tossed, and is pretty highly regarded around the league for his game intelligence. Seems like he'll bring Maddon's happy go lucky personality but won't stand for guys f***ing around like the Sox did this year.

I don't think we'll see a manager who's never managed before come into the pressure cooker of Boston. Just strikes me as an outright terrible idea.

Personally I think we'll be looking for a manager who has guided a team to the playoffs in the not too distant past.

In all likelihood, Ken Macha has the inside track. He knows the Red Sox org, is personally familiar with the front office types, worked for NESN for awhile, and is a former Pawsox manager. He's someone the ownership group is intrinsically comfortable with and they've made overtures to keep the lines of communication open in the past even while they were still 100% committed to Tito.

Also he did pretty good work with the A's including a couple playoff runs they had no right to make (esp in 2006) so he's not a bad results oriented manager, despite the fiasco with the Brewers.

He's not a bad option at all.

Seems like a lot of players have hated LaRussa - kind of Bobby Knight like.

I am really hoping that it's Jim Hickey or Dave Martinez. Hickey first, by far. He's a fantastic pitching coach for the Rays, and not only would it be fantastic to pry him away from that pitching staff, but I would love for him to take the helms and have some influence over our pitching staff, even if it is at arms length.

Dave Martinez would also be a good choice, after being in the Rays system for the past few years. This team needs a change, and maybe bringing in a page from the Rays book would be a good idea.

It would be brilliant to bring in Dave Martinez for the manager job, and replace Curt Young with Jim Hickey.

You might be right about the Bobby Knight comparison. However he could be just what our club house needs in order to shape up. If players wouldn't listion to Tito (and at this point it sounded like they didn't) Maybe they would pike up and listion to someone like LaRussa who would be willing to get into players faces and mean it.

I'll add a vote for Martinez. Soxfanforsyth. I'm with you on the Jim Hickey Idea as well. One of the reasons Tampa does so well against us is the way they run the pitching staff there. I like the idea of Mackanin from the phillies as well.

Have already voted for Martinez and love the Martinez, Hickey idea. The best thing Macha had going for him is that without question he has overachieved and done more with less than most managers and is right up there with the best in that regard. I cannot say whether he has been responsible for the performance of his pitching staffs but teams he has managed seem to do pretty well in that regard also.
