Adrian Gonzalez is really the only other legitimate leadership option I can think of on this team' date=' but he's more mild-mannered.[/quote']

Gonzo is an extraordinary talent but I agree. He does not have the "get in your face", type "A" personality. I just see the way Petey is brutally honest in his post game comments and I can sense (or maybe it's the alcohol talking) that he really wants to step up and be a leader.

During the loosing streak I didn't hear once of a players only meeting! Yes the manager is untimately responsable for motivating/repremanding players who are slacking off. But outwardly there is no player leadership. I keep saying this but Shill would have closed the door and let it fly. I hate to say this but everyone knows that it's Jeter's team. Screw up or slack off and you he will come find you. Where was Tek through all this? He's the Captain' date=' the voice of experience. And if it did happen, that should tell you how he is looked upon. I know for a fact that when Teddy Bruschi closed the doors, you had better be listening. Now I know you can't compare baseball to football. But there is still a team dynamic involved. Tito tried to bring up accountability in his own way (pat-pat, huge-huge, Kumbayah) but the players didn't respond. Why 04 and 07 worked with Tito's management style was due to great player leadership on and off the field. That ladies and gentleman is what we have lost! I keep waiting for petey to be that kind of leader of this team. I don't think it will happen as long as Tek has that "C"! Just my $0.02[/quote']

100% agree with you i think tek shouldnt have that c on his chest anymore the captain is the one who doesnt has to be liked by anyone in the clubhouse bout has to be respected for on-field play and leadership

i feel like pedrioa is be best qualified to be the captain because he plays that kinda baseball everyone respects he doesnt take a play off and he gives it his all

how about no captain?

Agree! This will give those who want to step up the latitude to do so without hurting someone's ego!

Anyone think Papi will be back?If not whose gonna replace that production?

Buchholz. Kalish. Crawford. Youkilis. Lavarnway.

Papi might be the one guy in the clubhouse who is bigger than any potental manager who will be brought in. That's a problem.

Just read Tito's staement!!! WOW! What a classy man. Putting the team before himself! Henry doesn't deserve this kind of loyality. Or it is just one big SPIN! Guess well never know.

What do you expect a deposed manager to say when he is waiting on a White Sox offer.

I just got done watching some of the conference. It feels very weird, I was ready for the possibility but seeing it actually happen is just strange. I never thought this day would come. I hope he finds success elsewhere and never has to pay for a drink or meal in the city of Boston again. Thanks for everything Tito, you'll always be the best manager the Red Sox have ever had.

You can believe what you want. But I honestly feel that he was very sincere and spoke from the heart.

I'm shocked. Where are all the people who were calling for Tito to be fired for the past 3-4 years? Why the silence on the day that he has been let go? I would expect those who were saying he was the worst manager in baseball to be rejoicing.

Um......am I just seeing things or is Tek the only one in MLB that has the "C" on his uniform. I havent seen it on anyother player that is a capt.

Before I say anything regarding management, I think picking a captain of the team is really stupid.

A700 I know you're waiting for the GM spot but take one for the team and take Francona's spot  Just kidding man. I don't know much about any of those players you guys mentioned earlier because I've never seen them play and how they act etc. I hear the Sox are going for Valentine? Is that a good move or bad? I see some posters are down for the move and some are not. I'd like to know why some of you think that way. Also what do you guys look for in a manager? What I want to see in Boston is someone who will lay the smackdown when a player doesn't do something right and has a shorter leash on a player. I feel like Francona was I guess you can say soft and he had wayyyy to much confidence in players which cost us a good amount of games. That's just me though. Interesting topic btw I just have no idea who anyone is.

What do you mean you hear they are going for Valentine? They will undoubtedly interview 5-10 people and probably are going to analyze a lot more than Valentine's baseball rantings...

How about placing the blame where it belongs Theo. Francona can only work with what he is given and it isn't all about stats. The Sox seem unwilling to build a team. Theo operates like a major league team is like picking a fantasy baseball team. It isn't.

This guy is correct...Red Sox fans are pretty much running a manager out of town that brought you 2 not 1 but 2 championships in the last 100 years. Someone actually said that the Red Sox job is coveted trust me no big time managers want that job.

The media will put Francona on the microphone and he will say its mutual. I feel bad for the guy. Your GM didn't pull any trades for any pitchers that killed this team. Bad signings is what caused your downfall.

Terry will find a more comfortable job and not have to worry about pressure. It will probably be another 100 years before you win another

That was pretty obvious this year. It's a sign that the team management had become complacent about winning. I'm talking about the front office, too. If they had winning in their gut, Pedey would have had that C on his uniform at the start of the year. And they might have had the stronger clubhouse leadership they lacked.

This club has deeper management problems than Tito. Epstein is way overrated. They won his first year in 04 with a team largely built by his predecessor, Dan Duquette. And they won in 07 because they made a trade for Beckett and Lowell when Theo was in his gorilla suit somewhere. A deal he wouldn't have made--even though Hanley R. turned out to be a good player (who could wind up back in Boston next year, by the way).

Don't think the FO doesn't remember the gorilla suit. If they had a good alternative to Theo, you might see him go as well. They probably don't.

More than one vacant manager position in the last year or so since Valentine has been on ESPN has pointed towards Valentine. We saw it in Florida and Baltimore. I am not saying he won't get it, but by virtue of being high profile by being on television, he is likely to get more positive speculation.

Btw, maybe ESPN, the main proponents, just want to get rid of him. :D

You cant screw it up if u have a payroll like that. You will make mistakes though and Lackey is one of them.Goodbye J.D Drew as well.

I don't think a captain on a baseball team makes any sense either. As it relates to player's meetings, you don't need to have a team captain to have somebody stand up and suggest a player's only meeting and I must admit not hearing that one was called considering everything that was going on is something of a surprise. The drinking during games issue that has been raised, Youk and the way players were relating to him and maybe others in the "Youk click" were not things that we knew about as fans but the slide would have suggested that the players needed to get on the same page and I actually kept waiting for the day when WEEI or somebody announced that one had been held. Now with everything else that has come to light i am really very surprised and would have to say that that clubhouse was a much bigger mess than I certainly imagined.

Now I would not at all be surprised if management did clean house and remove any hint of the messes that we seem to just be hearing about now combined with the messes we actually saw.

Just to be clear, the team was in a position such that if they had gone 9-18 in the last month of the season they would be in and nobody would be complaining.

It isn't a GM's job to make the team play above .333 baseball for the last month of the season.

Accountablity goes up and down this team, from Theo to Darnell McDonald. However, the team as constructed was undoubtedly good enough to win.

Werner: they're not wanting to see Theo go. They think he's one of the best GMs in baseball.

Translated, that means we don't see anyone better who's available.

The Rays, by the way, made suki-yaki of the Rangers tonite, 9-0. Shoppach, .176 hitter, 2 HRs. Dirt Dog Damon, HR. This team is on a roll--shades of the Giants last year.

It goes way beyond that. There's plenty of blame to go around. The manager, however, is usually the one to get the axe first.
