Even the MLBN game announcers are depressed over Buchholz's sorry performance. They opine that the Red Sox seriously miscalculated when they traded away the 4 other starters. If they thought Buchholz could help anchor this staff, he just blew up that plan on national TV.
The core of the A's are Red Sox rejects. Looks like Billy Bean is as smart as his Money-ball reputation. Keep in mind that Red Sox coaching is well over-rated. Farrell, etc. survive on luck and career years...not so good at coaching up sub standard performance.
Bust in Clev, great start in NE, but has not met expectations since getting busted in 2007. He buys the groceries, cooks the meal, but the meal tastes bitter.
Ya gotta wonder if this guy is scared to come back and face the catcalls from Sox fans if he doesn't rip it up right out of the gate. The front office should have the nutsacks to dump this guy for whatever they can get and write it off as another Theo failure.
Many projected that Youk would head to Chicago with a 'prove it ' attitude. Sure, for now he has a fire in his belly and can focus better in the absence of the Red Sox soap opera. A few pundits think this is the time to blow up the Sox, and they should be sellers at the TD. Youk was just a prelude to the whooosh sound we should soon witness.

Schilling's absence is typical for his outsized ego. Perhaps he has heard that John and Larry are not happy with his criticisms in the media. Even Tito eventually relented and showed up because he realizes that the Red Sox legacy is larger than any individual. Schilling thinks he is larger than the Red Sox.
With the Dodgers setting a new bar for franchise values, Henry prolly wouldn't sell the Sox for anything less than 3B. The Yanks are now gestimated to be worth 4B.
The Red Sox brass would have seemed petty if they didn't invite Francona - but fully expecting that he would decline. It has to be uncomfortable for the team to have this celebration so close to the meltdown. I assume that they had to invite Theo as well, and Theo doesn't have any personal reason to decline.
I still think that if was someone on the training staff - and NOT someone in the high FO/owner's box - they would have done a lot more to root out the culprit. Firing a trainer would be a lot better press than doing nothing and therefore making it seem the owner/FO is the source.
If ownership and management of the Sox are really innocent as the source of the damaging info ( Hohler article) re Francona, and motivated to get to the bottom of the report, they could have applied pressure in more subtle ways. They could have made Hohler persona non grata for the Red Sox lockerroom and any interviews. That would have a similar effect on Hohler as giving up his sources - basically he would be finished as a Sox reporter. IIRC the Pats may have done that to Tomasse ( Herald) after his Spygate report that 'someone' ( Matt Walsh ). had a secret walkthru tape of the Rams. The Herald had to transfer him to the Red Sox beat - he was finished as a Pats reporter.
"There are players on this team now that we signed as free agents that we still feel strongly about, and that I was a proponent of signing." - Cherington
Not much is gonna change around here.
It has been formally announced that Theo is officially gone to Chicago with no deal yet on compensation. Now Epstein and Cherington will negotiate with each other - as if that wasn't already occurring? Let's see if Selig has to step in to solve the dysfunctional puzzle.
