Lars isn't what he used to be but still has time to improve.

Lars never was what he could otherwise have been had he been what he could have become.

8:15pm: The Red Sox are out on Willingham and still trying on Harden, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter).

Billy Beane may have a reputation for being shrewd and the whole Moneyball thing (big fan' date=' here) but he makes some weird moves. I suspect he will give up Harden for a few players we care NOTHING about.[/quote']

If he's dealing him tonight, then he's getting a good haul. Harden thus far in 5 starts has 30K in 29.1IP and has a WHIP of 1.16. He faced the Yanks recently, and we ground him out of the game early due to plate discipline, but his stuff was filthy enough that we couldnt hit it

Thats the problem though' date=' he is rarely ever healthy.[/quote']

But he's healthy now. At least he isn't coming back after knee problems TONIGHT (Bedard). He isn't a savior, but if he's healthy I'm pretty comfortable with him and Lackey competing for the 4th starter spot in the playoffs.

If he goes on a solid run, he can be really, really good.

I don't get the last part. Are you saying Lars never was what he could be and if he was he would be what he could?

Lars is hitting .296/.367/.571 with 6 home runs in the month of July. We should trade him now before he reverts back to a goofy looking singles hitter.

No he isn't. I bet I could list 10-15 prospects the Sox won't give up for him and they can still land him.

Looks as if #Athletics & #RedSox closing in on a deal for Rich Harden tonight. That one also not "done!" #trades

Harden is never healthy for long' date=' that's the problem. I'd rather try my chances on Bedard or look elsewhere.[/quote']

Elsewhere where? Jeremy Guthrie?

Lets see. Kuroda is off the table. Bedard looked AWFUL in his return last night. Ubaldo just got dealt. Garza and Shields arent moving. Harden is probably the best starter still available with almost a full day to go to the deadline. He wont give him away unless he has to at the last minute. If he gets what he thinks is right tonight, he'll deal him

Harden is often injured, not that good, on a team going nowhere. Both sides could be happy without the Sox losing any of their most important prospects.

If the sox are dealing for Harden' date=' they're giving away at least 1 prospect with a big league future.[/quote']

Like David Murphy, Kelly Shoppach or Brandon Moss?

Yes, but if a deal gets done TONIGHT then Beane thinks he's getting someone with a big league future. If he is dealt TOMORROW around 4pm or so, then he's dumping him for what he can get

Harden's stats this year are inflated by his 15+% HR/FB ratio. That is sure to go down in Fenway, one of the least friendly parks for home runs and his ERA will likely be more like his xFIP of 3.53.

My guess would be someone like Kyle Weiland, a guy who profiles as a back of the rotation pitcher without much future in Boston.
