Navarro and a nobody to the Royals for Mike Aviles.

Yikes. I guess they wanted a guy who could give Scutaro rest. Aviles isn't a bad utility man, but I think we came out second in this trade, considering how young Navarro was and how well he hit in the minors. Royals have holes at second and third, and Navarro has a clear path to start there, if he can get his bat to a point where he can hold the job. We could wind up regretting this one every time we see them for the next several years.

The Red Sox acquired infielder Mike Aviles from the Royals for infielder/outfielder Yamaico Navarro and reliever Kendal Volz, according to the Royals' official Twitter feed.

Aviles, 30, has struggled this year but owns a career line of .286/.317/.417 in 1218 plate appearances. He finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting in 2008, and is capable of playing second base, shortstop, and third base. He'll be arbitration eligible for the first time after the season and is under team control through 2014.

Navarro, 23, hit .258/.362/.469 in 149 Triple-A plate appearances this year, playing all over the diamond. Prior to the season, Baseball America ranked Navarro 12th among Red Sox prospects, citing 15-20 home run potential but questioning his maturity. Volz, 23, posted a 3.33 ERA, 9.8 K/9, 2.1 BB/9, and 1.1 HR/9 in 51 1/3 relief innings at High-A this year and is not among the team's top 30.

Seems like a lot to give up for a backup infielder. Aviles best defensive position is shortstop and he owns a career line of .296/.343/.464 against lefties (.309/.344/.600 this year in 55 AB).

He's not a bad two way shortstop actually, but he's gotten hurt before making throws from the hole because his arm isn't strong.

I guess arm at shortstop is something Theo doesn't bother worrying about.

That would explain why the Red Sox were trying out Navarro in the outfield. Sounds like the Red Sox had questions about his maturity, which I had never heard before until now. I think it may have had to do more with his defense.

Well he's pulled some brainfarts in the field, that's for sure. Say what you want about Aviles, he's been around the block a few times.

Whats the difference between Aviles and Lowrie? seems incredibly redundant

The difference is Aviles is healthy at the moment. Until Lowrie gets back they were in a position where they had to abuse the heck out of Scutaro, since apparently they didn't trust Navarro at short.

It's also possible that they don't consider Lowrie a viable option at short either anymore.

Aviles can play defense. It's also possible that we're going to include Lowrie in a deal, who knows.

Nope. He's got stones for hands, but I have a feeling this is for another trade. Aviles has gone on record saying he is unhappy being on the bench and being a UTL guy only hurts him offensively and defensively. Maybe they'll deal him off to the Dodgers with Weiland for Kurado after they trade Furcal.

Also worth noting is that Aviles was a .297/.337/.468 hitter in the minors and hit .325/.354/.480 with the Royals in 419 at bats in 2008 before requiring Tommy John in 2009. The typical recovery time for TJ is two years, maybe the Red Sox are taking a chance on him bouncing back.

Maybe the trade him with Wieland + 1 more for Kurado + Furcal. Sox could use a SS upgrade.

Scoutaro > Aviles right?' date=' at least seems to me....[/quote']

Not either of the last 2 years it's not. Scutaro is overrated. He doesn't have more than about average range, his hands are good-not-great, and his arm is deteriorating by the minute. Aviles is more or less in his prime, he's a lot rangier than Scutaro, and his bat plays average or better at short. His issue is durability and arm strength, but those don't set him apart from Scutaro, while his strengths do.

On the other hand, he's definitely the backup SS here so the answer to your real question is probably yes.

The Yankees inquired on Twins center fielder Denard Span, tweets Yahoo's Tim Brown. Brown imagines that this inquiry could be part of something bigger, since the Yankees are currently set on outfielders. Joel Sherman speculates that if the Yankees inquired on Span perhaps it was with the idea of flipping him to the Nationals involving Tyler Clippard.

Doj, you can add Tyler Clippard to the list of Yankees prospects who are doing well elsewhere.

perhaps but I thought I saw on MLBTR the cards were getting Furcal.

Aviles maybe indicates Lowrie is going somewhere, just off DL? Somebody is getting freed up to deal here. This ain't THE deal.

Kuroda would be interesting. I don't put much weight on him as an acquisition, and don't really think of him has a significant move, more in the Jeff Suppan 2003 category. I know he's been good in LA, and I'd be open to counter-arguments.

He would be a true #4 or #5 addition for this club. That's factually what they need, but I think it is fair to say we had hoped for more.

As for Aviles, he may be a more polished version Navarro. It just seems like a weird thing to put so many years and games into Navarro to trade him for an older, potentially less talented version of himself. I like the cost-controlledness of it, but Aviles isn't particularly young (30). He may just be the Marco Scutaro/multi-position player for this club moving forward off the bench.

I would prefer that he be part of a deal somewhere else though.

Clearly not. It isn't 10 minutes past the trade deadline yet! That's when we always hear about THE deal.

The Red Sox acquired Mike Aviles on Saturday and plan to try him in the outfield, but they'd rather add another player who is more familiar with the position.

The price on Jimenez has come down a tad, tweets Jon Heyman. He says the Rockies are no longer asking for Banuelos from the Yankees; Betances, Nova, and Montero would work. That's similar to what Joel Sherman wrote earlier today. The two teams have not talked today, tweets Troy Renck. Renck believes the Yankees currently will not put both Montero and Betances in the deal - just one.

That's still a very heavy price which Cashman will not surrender.

The Rockies are only lowering their offer if they are really intent on moving Jimenez. Clearly this isn't the Felix Hernandez situation from 2009. Make a splash Theo. It won't hurt.

Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston reports that the Red Sox are interested in outfielder Coco Crisp.

The Red Sox acquired Mike Aviles on Saturday and plan to try him in the outfield, but they'd rather add another player who is more familiar with the position. Enter Crisp. The 31-year-old has a weak .702 OPS on the season, but he'd provide great speed off the Boston bench and he has good range defensively.

Any news on if Roger is considering coming out of retirement? He might come cheap.
