My brother was drafted in the 23rd round by the Angels. He got screwed over big time, but I'm just glad it's over.

If he wasnt a signability guy, he might do better going back to school. 23rd rounders are disposable, even if they dominate. One of my teammates got drafted by the DBacks in the 25th round or so. He won the rookie league's triple crown that year, and had a career BA of .320 with an OPS over .900. But he was cut 2 yrs later when he didnt get promoted out of the short season leagues. He said it was his lack of a position

I believe it was a combination of signability and the lack of a true position that did him in. The Pirates offered to take him in the 6th if he converted to catcher. The Angels offered to take him in the 8th, but I think he asked for too much money. He profiles as a corner outfielder. He might be able to get by as a center fielder. He can also play first.

An interesting note, through around pick 500, the Red Sox have the 4th highest amount of BA top 200 picks, and when you weigh the picks (1 point for #200, and 200 points for #1) the Red Sox are also 4th. Similarly, the Yankees appear to be dead last in weighted points and 2nd to last in number of top 200 players.

The Rays have 12 top 200 players (1478 total points) the Padres and Blue Jays both have 11 players (1293 and 1158 points respectively) and the Red Sox have 9 players (1117 points) while the Yankees are in a 4 way tie for 2nd to last with only 3 top 200 players, tied with the Astros, Angels, and the Dodgers. For the record, the Astros have 305 points, the Angels have 291 points, the Dodgers have 231 points, and the Yankees have 131 points.

The Cubs only have 2 players, but they have more points than the 4 teams with 338 points.

The BA rankings are non-sense, and the Yankees have shown that to be true by their farm system strength. They typically go with guys they have scouted religiously and have been rewarded for doing so

I found it very interesting how the Rays handled their stockpile of picks. I've read several reports that said they picked several players that they knew were low cost signings. Its a shame that small market teams can't even afford to draft the best players possible.

If you watched the first round on TV the Sox were using the BA magazine rankings as their sheet. So I would expect them to have one of the higher number of picks in the BA list.

I'm not going to argue the strength of the Yankees farm system, but keep in mind that the farm system is much more than the draft. Similarly, the Yankees make the majority of their advantage through the IFA market, where they are among the leaders. It's no secret though that the Yankees are nowhere near the top of the drafting teams. Part of that is their lack of picks (due to FA signing), part of that is due to picking at the bottom (due to having a good record) part of that is due to spending more time and money on the IFA market, and part of that is just not being very good at drafting.

The "not very good at drafting" doesnt fly anymore.

2003- Tyler Clippard- MLB setup man (Nationals)

2004- Phil Hughes- MLB SP

2005- Brett Gardner- MLB starting OFer

2005- Lance Pendleton- MLB reliever

2005- Austin Jackson- MLB starting OFer (Tigers)

2006- Ian Kennedy- MLB SP

2006- Joba Chamberlain- MLB setup man

2006- David Robertson- MLB setup man

2006- Colin Curtis- MLB 4th OFer

2006- Dellin Betances- Top 100 prospect

2006- Mark Melancon- MLB closer (Astros)

2006- Daniel McCutchen- MLB SP/RP (Pirates)

2007- Andrew Brackman- Top 100 prospect

2007- Austin Romine- Top 100 prospect

and the beat goes on. The thing is, the Yanks have been drafting very well since 2005, IMO. And they picked it up significantly in 2006. It just takes awhile for draftees to develop, especially when you pick a bunch of HSers

The Cubs taking Trevor Gretzky in the 7th round is such a joke and clearly a publicity stunt. The kid tore his labrum playing football. Baseball America called him "a poor runner," questioned his defense, and said "he has plenty of holes in his swing."

Jim Hendry proves once again that he is the worst GM in baseball, and it's not even close.

Do you know much about Jackie Bradley Jr.? I didn't, but then watched a number of videos and did some reading. I definitely question his upside from a tools perspective, but he was the starting cf for a CWS champion team and won the MVP for the CWS in 2010.

There are a number of pretty good videos of him on youtube where he sounds pretty mature and seems to have nice pop in his bat. Looks like a natural leader and he played in a good conference. I have no clue what his future is with the Sox, but I'm more optimistic than I was before watching some of those clips. He's definitely played in the spotlight in a major conference for a few years.

Jackie Bradley Jr. is a damn good player. When I saw that we got him I was very happy with the pick. I've seen him play in person several times and the guy can flat out play the game. His numbers at South Carolina fell a little bit this year compared to his monster season in 2010, but he battled some injuries all year and may have been pressing a little bit about the upcoming draft. Regardless, I think we got a good one. Putting up the numbers he has in the toughest conference in the nation (SEC) should definitely count for something. If he had left and gone pro last year I think he would've been a top ten player.

It really has to suck to be a Cubs fan. Obviously. But they just keep doing the same things over and over again...

What happened?

From what I can tell, it looks like he was asking for too much money (on really bad advice from his coach) and teams passed on him because they thought he would have been difficult to sign. Had he just been more flexible, he would have been drafted in the 8th round. The Pirates were interested in him in the 6th if he had been willing to convert to catcher. Can't blame him for not liking that offer. It's easily the most demanding position, and he's never caught in his life. The Marlins would've taken him in the 17th had he not hesitated.

It looks like our 8th round pick (Senquez Golson) is not going to sign with us. He really wants to play CB at Ole Miss, and he isn't attending the draftee event at Fenway Park. He wanted a little over a million, but the highest amount the Sox ever paid an 8th round pick I believe was the $415,000 last year to Matt Price.

According to major league sources, the Red Sox have agreements in place with several players whom they selected in last week's MLB Draft, with some signings expected to be announced as soon as today while others will soon be finalized following routine physicals and drug tests. Among those who agreed to deals are two of the Sox' picks taken in the first 10 rounds: Sixth-rounder Miguel Pena, a left-hander from San Jacinto College who signed for $85,000, and ninth-rounder Travis Shaw ($110,000), a powerful third baseman who is the son of former big league closer Jeff Shaw.

I don't know the bonuses, but it looks like we've also signed, or will shortly sign 11th rd Kevin Brahney (LHP), 13th rd Matty Ott (RHP), 14th rd Mike McCarthy (RHP), 15th rd Braden Kapteyn (1b) 22nd rd Joe Holtmeyer (RHP) 24th rd Drew Turocy (OF), 39th rd Corey Vogt (RHP), and 45th rd Matt Gedman (2b)

(In addition to our 6th rd Miguel Pena (LHP) and 9th rd Travis Shaw (3b) that 22407 posted)

please keep me updated on this one.

Ott is one that we (LSU fans) figured was 60%/40% chance he was leaving.

If y'all get 2009 Matty Ott, he's a good one.

If y'all get 2010-2011 Ott, y'all gonna be pulling y'all hair out in frustration.

Dude was a stud as a freshman.

Inconsistent as a sophomore.

As a Junior, he started out strong, then melted, then went back to being inconsistent.

This has been the theme for our entire pitching staff, and a big reason our pitching coach was fired after the season, so there is definitely hope for Ott to put it all together and be a solid contributor at some level.

It looks like we signed him and that he'll be headed to Lowell.

Most excited about Swihart, Bradley and Kukuk. Bradley could eventually become Ellsbury's replacement in center, he was fun to watch in the CWS.

I was a little scared there around midnight last night when a lot of big names were still holding, but it looks like the Sox got 13 of their top 15 guys. I should know by now that the deadline for onlookers doesn't necessarily mean everything will be announced.
