How can Dice K be mentioned in an optimism thread? he has always sucked. brief moments of good pitching doesn't take away his suck.

What is your definition of the word "suck?" His 2008 year when he went 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA is defined as "sucking?" He had a whole season where he was a solid starter. I don't think you can define that as a year that he "sucked" and a whole year is more than a "brief moment." Past 2008 he has sucked and has been injury prone, so I think that part of what you are saying is true. He was not that great in 2007, but he did get us two wins in the 2007 postseason and one of those wins came in the World Series.

Dice-K is being mentioned in this thread because he is a depth option as a starter. He has sucked this year in all of his rehab starts, except his last one. He actually had a solid outing giving up no runs in five innings. That is after he came off of the DL for the second time. I am not saying that we can be optimistic about Dice-K, but we can definitely keep an eye on him as he continues his rehab assignment in Pawtucket. If one of our current starters gets hurt or completely starts to suck, then it is always nice to have a depth option like Dice-K, especially if he is pitching solid in the minors. We can be optimistic about having him as a depth option.

Atchison for closer!

seriously the guy CAN pitch and he keeps the ball away from the danger zone. Most RHH have no chance off him with his cutter and slider at the corners.

I'd give it a shot. Also allows us to put ace back into his comfort zone.

He hasn't always sucked. He did play well the first year we had him. :P

OK optimism.....

The pitching has been my biggest bitch and it really seems to be working itself out. I love what Dubronts been doing. The bullpen actually seems good to me right now.

If Ells comes back I really like a Nava, Sweeney, Ells outfield with Ross as a fourth when he comes back.

I am frustrated with AGonz but do expect him to come back to form. We are finding ways to win without him hitting for power...... if he does heat it up, watch out.

I am very pleased with Aviles. Good hustle player producing well. Coaching staff getting all they can from him.

The biggest thing I see that gives me hope is that I am seeing the team enjoy themselves. I am seeing more laughter and smiles. I'm not seeing cold shoulders being turned to the manager. For a while it did not seem like this team was having fun playing baseball. I did not notice players celebrating each others successes. They seem to be rallying around each other more and more. I realize I only get a small peak into the team chemistry. And I admit this is all speculation so don't feel the need to prove me wrong, I just enjoy studying human behaviour and body language, and it seems to be much more positive. I think the benches being emptied in Tampa and the Salty walk off were very important. We shall see.

In his first two outings with the PawSox, Prior has struck out six hitters and walked one in 2 2/3 innings pitched. He's allowed two hits and has not been charged with a run. His fastball averaged 91 miles per hour and topped out at 93 in the 1 2/3 innings he pitched on Tuesday night.

"I was real happy with his fastball," PawSox pitching coach Rich Sauveur said. "His command, I thought, was really good. He's got that delivery that's real compact. It seems like he was locating the ball where he wanted to. He was elevating when he wanted to. That's Mark Prior."

Prior had good velo for us last yr as well, until his tightly wound body went undone. It is amazing that he has gone through so many surgeries and still can run it up there over 90mph. The guy is a tough SOB. I hope he makes it back to the bigs

It's been a while since this thread has been active. Even though we lost today, we still have plenty to be excited about.

- We went 16 games with our starters not giving up more than 3 runs, to me that is pretty impressive.

- We had a 7 game win streak, and even with today's loss, we're 2 games ahead of the Yankees

- We are now 12-5, the past few years we had really slow April starts. Through 17 games in 2012: 7-10, 2011: 6-11, 2010: 7-10

-Jon Lester is off to a magnificent start. In 4 games, Lester is 3-0. Has a 1.73 ERA, 23 SO and only gave up 5 ER. Last year in 4 games, he was 0-2. He had an 6.00 ERA, 16 SO and gave up 16 runs

-Clay has been nothing but perfect so far this season. Has won every start so far. He's a perfect 4-0, has a 0.90 ERA(leads AL), 29 SO and gave up only 3 runs. He also leads MLB in IP with 30.

-The Red Sox pitching leads the AL in SO and BAA. Ranked 2nd in all of MLB overall.

-Ellsbury leads MLB in SB with 7

- Red Sox are ranked 8th in runs in the MLB. That's good because we just got Ortiz back today and WMB, outside of his 3 HR game, hasn't done anything. The offense will come, you guys should know this.

Btw, I miss example1. Hopefully everything is ok with him and his family.

When things go wrong, this is the best place to get over it.

-Webster pitched pretty good his first outing

-Napoli showing his display of power. Really starting to hit the ball.

-Still on top of the AL East

-Ellsbury hit tonight stretch hitting streak to 10

Posted

- The team has a better road record(7-2) than home(7-5). I consider this a good thing being that it's harder to win on the road than at home

- Lead the AL East by 2 games with a 4 game series coming against the Astros

- 7-3 the last 10 games

- Napoli leads the league in RBIs with 26

-Only 4 pitchers have 4 wins in the MLB, we have 2 of them.(Buchholz and Lester)

lol

Some more good stuff

- Jacoby Ellsbury is 10 for 10 on stolen bases in 21 games. He had 14 in 74 games last season.

- Lester did not get his 4th win until June 16, last year. He has his 4th win on April 24 this year.

- Sox are 9-0 in games started by Lester and Buchholz

- Lester and Buchholz combined for an 8-0 record, 1.61 ERA

Anything can happen.

As a Sox fan for life, I have not given up on the idea of this team playing competitive ball and possibly making the playoffs.

Things are not so peachy on this team right now.

GO SOX!

At 20-28 with now a 9 game losing streak, I'm mailing in this season. Sorry guys, it's a development year which is why signing Drew was a really stupid move to begin with.

Please, please get rid of Sizemore. Get rid of Herrera.

Hell, call up Mookie. This is absurd. I cannot fathom how this team is going to go from a 97 win team to a sub-.500 team in a year.

This year is worse than 2012, at least through 50 games. Way worse

Having said that, I'm optimistic because the Sox have an awesome farm, and that's what's going to keep th from running 65 win teams out there in consecutive years. They've got an amazing run coming in the next few years, but absorbing the development lumps is a tough time

You know that point in Who Wants To Be a Millionaire where, if you reach it, you're guaranteed to keep that cash even if you get the next question wrong, so it's a free shot? I see this in this season. They just won the World f***ing Series for the third time in a decade. I won't cry if they don't even make the playoffs.

lol @ people who are already throwing in the towel this season. I see a lengthy winning stream coming soon. It won't be long before everything is grooving and they're back over .500

^I like this guy

But seriously, even though we look bad, keep the faith. The Red Sox always seem to do the impossible. You have to take the bad with the good. Last 10 years we have 3 championships, more than anyone in the MLB.

Amen !!!! They can not take last years title away. Last year is an example when everything went right, and this year is in reverse following "Murphy's Law". Because of last year this is a little easier to take. The one ray of hope is that the Jays are the only team in the AL East playing good ball and not bitten by the injury bug. If things continue to go south start playing the kids.
