Crawford deal upsets liverpool fans

Any concern that Fenway Sports Group's purchase of Liverpool would hurt the Red Sox seems misplaced for now. Carl Crawford has made a career out of terrorizing opposing baseball teams with a lethal bat and scorching speed. But nobody ever expected him to cause so much angst in a gray, industrial city in northwest England. This week in Liverpool, the home of one of England's most beloved -- but lately most woebegone -- professional soccer teams, Mr. Crawford's just-announced $142 million contract with the Boston Red Sox has been a source of disgruntlement among soccer fans from Twitter to the pubs along Mathew Street. ... Chris Whelan, a 49-year-old Liverpool fan from Chester, said: "It's all very well spending all that money on a shortstop or whatever, but we haven't had a decent left-back for 12 years."

With much of the roster filled, and two recent acquisitions to think about, I'm trying to figure out who Carl Crawford is as a player and what his impact is likely to be.

This little video is a good reminder of the fact that Crawford is a great athelete:

I've seen a lot of comparisons between Carl Crawford and Roberto Clemente and decided to look into it further. The similarities are pretty stunning thru age 28 (where Crawford is now):
PLAYER | G | PA | AVG | OBP | SLG | OPS | OPS + | HR | RBI | 3B | 2B | TB | TOT WAR | WAR (162g) |

Crawford | 1235 | 5383 | .296 | .337 | .444 | .781 | 107 | 104 | 592 | 105 | 215 | 2217 | 26.1 | 3.7

Clemente | 1213 | 5017 | .303 | .337 | .439 | .776 | 109 | 92 | 570 | 75 | 214 | 2062 | 24.2 | 3.6
Clemente did everything well and started his career very early like Crawford did. Clemente had a bit more HR power while Crawford is considerably faster.

So, how did Clemente do during the prime of his career? Is it reasonable to hope that Crawford can keep that career trajectory going?
YEARS | G | PA | AVG | OBP | SLG | OPS | OPS+ | HR | RBI |

1962-1970 (total) | 1282 | 5452 | .329 | .378 | .503 | .881 | 147 | 152 | 739 |

1962-1970 (162g avg) | 162 | 687 | .329 | .378 | .503 | .881 | 147 | 20 | 94 |
During those years Clemente averaged 6.2 WAR per season, 7.1 WAR per 162 g. Players who hit 6 WAR consistently are tremendous players. If Crawford were able to produce at that level then his contract would be seen as fair.

He's one of a few comparables, but Clemente is the comparison I like the most.

Their all having the same reaction that a700 had when the Ownership group bought the Soccer club. "The Soccer club better not set any limitations for the Red Sox". Their upset now because they see the Red Sox getting big name players. While they have been told that Liverpool may need to wait and may not be in on any of the big names this FA period. It's understandable. Liverpool FC fans just need to relax. This isn't Tom Hicks running the franchise. And they shouldn't lump what he did in with all American owners.

They will cool off once they see some things happening for their team. They're going to be disappointed if they expect immediate results with 100's of millions of dollars being pumped into the roster right away. They will learn and eventually their roster will be set up for the big moves.

They rotated the camera just as he was wiping his face, classy move, NESN cameras. He is also saying he doesn't have a preference as of where he will hit in the lineup, and will respect Francona's decision. His throat is really bothering him.

He's sweating quite a bit, and he's having trouble speaking--I'm surprised to realize that he's American-born. This is concerning--Hopefully he can handle the pressure of Fenway? Anyone know anything about his ability to handle pressure?

Really think you're reading too much into this.

He's had a bottle of Poland Spring in front of him the whole time. He's just being a tough mofo.

I've heard stories of people running into players all the time at bars

His name is Carl Crawford, why would he not be American-born? He never looks nervous on the field.

Try to relax a little dude.:)

His broken english?
He had a very bad throat today and he could hardly speak. I noticed at one point his voice gave out entirely and his eyes watered up. He just had a bad cold.

No, I understand that. I just had to google him to see where he was born to see what his natural language was, and it surprised me, because it sounded like he was speaking broken english. I just wish he had gone out and said "I have a cold" instead of "my throat gave out".

Relax. Reading way too much into it.

Seems to have quite the fever and respiratory infection going right now, no big deal.

Makes it sound like that he had a "busy" night last night.

Have you ever heard him talk before? He's not exactly a scholar. That coupled with either a real bad cold or a real nice hangover contributed to they way he came off today IMO:D
