As said' date=' give it till atleast Lester warms up until complaining:D[/quote']

By mid May, early June, the team should know where they are at.

What's everyone's fascination with Martin? He has a shredded hip and his peripheral stats have been declining for years.

He doesn't cost much, and gives the Sox some upside at a position where they don't really have a lot right now. If he was 34 or something coming back from a hip injury, I would be less interested.

He's young enough to recover from that hip, and he's an interesting player in a late 20's Jason Kendall kind of way. He's exactly the kind of player I thought they'd be going after when I saw the team had let VMart go. A guy who could probably start and not kill the team if Salty can't but isn't so likely that Salty won't get a chance to win the job for himself.

As said' date=' give it till atleast Lester warms up until complaining:D[/quote']I don't complain. I critique... bluntly, but it is meant to be constructive criticism. Even when I say that a guy stinks, that is meant to be constructive; i.e. the manager should sit him for a while and play someone else or the FO should replace the guy.

Even with your weak middle relief' date=' the sox are a playoff team right now. I think Theo should be applauded by those who talked about how cheap he is. But should also be cautious to give him too much praise, as the Crawford deal was completely stupifying. Highest AAV EVER for an outfielder[/quote']I think what this indicates is that the Red Sox like the Yankees have the ability and the willingness to drive the market to new levels when they want a player. This ownership is making a ton of money from several revenue streams. If a contract like this goes bad, it would be a bitter pill, but not a crippling blow. While the Yankees admittedly have more resources, that is not as relevant as the willingness to spend. I think the Red Sox willingness to spend to build a contender is almost equal to that of the Yanks. That's not a good thing for Yankee fans who have become used to cornering the market for FA spending.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman told Jack Curry of the YES Network that the team dined with Crawford even though they weren't interested in signing the outfielder. In other words, Cashman says it was a bluff.
Cashman must be pissed off about recent developments for him to resort to this sort of pettiness.

Liverpool fan making a bit of an invasion if you people don't mind, when i heard about these signings and the massive amounts of money involved, it has been encouraging as hopefully Henry and co will splash some cash for Liverpool players when our transfer window opens in January. They said pretty early on that they will not be making big money signings in the winter and will be doing their business in the summer, but reading NESN they seem to have their eye on a number of players for next month.

Again sorry for interrupting the baseball talk.

I think you will soon find out with this ownership group that it is actually better news for fans when they say they AREN'T going to do anything than it is when they say they will be doing something. They like to work under the radar.

This ownership plays everything close to the chest. The less you hear, the more likely they are working on something. Not always, but a good portion of the time. I would expect them to try and stabilize the roster. And once they have done that, then I would expect some larger pieces to be put in place.

Yeah right who meets with a guy for dinner if there's no interest in him. He was just pissed off that boston signed Crawford.

Yeah i'm getting the impression that if they say nothing it is usually a good thing. It was a surprise when they announced Damian Comolli as Director of Football after they took over the team. That dude eats sleeps and breathes Sabremetrics.

Pardon me for asking another question, but are most people not happy about the Sox most recent signings?

We are very excited. But a lot of us understand they are big risky moves that may not look as good at the end of the deals. At least when it comes to Crawford.

When it comes to free agents expect them to set a price to a player and stick to it . They won't spend money just to spend money to appease certain factions of fans. They make good on field and off field investments that fit their model. This approach allowed them to save the money and prospects(traded pieces) that others wanted them to spend trade at inopportune times, to make the big moves this off season. Sometimes this will result in "bridge" type years. But if you can handle that you should be fine. If your learn anything from the Ownership group it's this. They want to win, they want to be competitive, and although they may not spend the most(No one spend as much as the Yankees) expect them to be pretty high up in the payroll rankings. And don't expect knee jerk reactions by the organization either. They are typically calm, cool, and collected.

For some reason there are a lot of people who like to complain. But these moves are big for the team. From a business standpoint, adding another monster bat, and another speedester will raise the popularity of the team quite a bit-- aka money. And from a competitive standpoint, it not only makes the Sox the best offense in baseball, but it also makes them an elite defensive team. Left handed pitching might be a problem, but I think they're looking for a solution to that as we speak.

They don't play big, they try to play smart. If smart means big move, they make the big move, if it means wait, then they wait. It all comes down to where they see the team being.

Most people should be VERY happy with the recent signings.

If the Liverpool FC is run anything like the Red Sox you should be prepared for a few different--initially startling--tendencies:

1) Current established LFC players will not be treated like royalty. If they became free agents (i.e., their contract runs out) this ownership group will not be fooled into overpaying to retain their services out of ideas like "fan loyalty" or "fan pressure". If players try to use those ideas against the ownership group it won't work.

2) Cost-savings at all turns. The ownership group will likely try to be as absolutely effecient with money as possible in most areas. This isn't always the case (see point 3, below) but it is usually the case, and in between signficiant money signings, there might be confusion or frustration that LFC isn't getting (or entertaining) every major name that comes up.

3) Enormously satisfying moves. John Henry is a man of pride. He likes having his name associated with good players. That doesn't mean that he would see any significant benefit by bringing some washed-up but famous baller to the club to make a splash. He will approve spending ungodly sums on the best of the best, when he's sure that the supporting cast for that player will make LFC a really dangerous club.

Following this front office's moves is at once both fascinating, frustrating, and totally, completely rewarding. The payoff will come, and money saved in one area WILL be spent in another. The conversion from one player to another may just not come overnight.

I would argue that the ownership is willing to overpay for players out of loyalty... to an extent. Lowell's contract is a good example-- they paid him far more than they wanted to because he helped win them a world series. Ortiz too, because they overpaid him a little bit because he's an immensely popular player, and the extra money he costs above value is made up in fan revenue for him being on the Red Sox. But they aren't going to pay Papelbon Rivera money, by any means.

I'd argue that most Sox fans are happier than we Brits are watching Eurovision or going to PubTrivia.

The thing is, the offseason (also called the Hot Stove) is a long and arduous process and is an emotional rollercoaster. In a matter of minutes people can be enraged and orgasmically happy. One can only give a complete offseason grade at its completion when the final product is realised, but for now, I'd say that almost every Red Sox fan is incredibly happy, albeit others, like me, are happy with a side of cautious optimism.

Actually I believe Lowell left an extra year +$ to stay with the Red Sox when they wouldn't match the offer made by Philly.

They did for Ortiz. But that was to keep at one year. That's also something they will do.They may overpay for one year of someone to avoid going long term for another player.

Yeah, I was aware of that, but they still took a huge risk because of his popularity, and because of how they floundered after dismantling the team in '05.

That and the only other good 3B available was Gay-rod, as my girlfriend so eloquently calls him.
