I was just going over the lineup and their individual stats. One thing that jumped out at me is that Ortiz and AGon's 2010 stats are very similar. We're thrilled to have AGon join the club for the next 6-8 years' date=' but many of us are looking to cut Ortiz's throat on a year to year basis. For a guy that is in decline, he's still pretty damn good. In this lineup with shorter fences, he could have another really good year.[/quote']

Relative age is the primary factor. We don't want to get burnt because we held onto a big heavy guy with well documented kinee problems too long. Papi's 35, the age that decline typically begins. Adgon is much younger.

Werth really is the perfect fit for this lineup with the Gonzalez move. Unless Theo has some mega plan to get Upton and then sign Crawford of course

Upton isn't coming to Boston after they just dealt a good chunk of their prospects.

Just remember this when we are all doubting how s***** he does at the beginning of the season.

The first thing they need to do is sit him against the really good LHP. I think that will go a very long way into him having a solid 2011 IMO.

Agon's stats are significantly deflated by playing in Petco. He's proven over the past couple years that he is a 1.000 OPS hitter on the road, and will perhaps be even higher than that while playing in Fenway. I'm really excited to see what he can do to say the least

Ortiz has a lot of problems. The most glaring of which is his .554 OPS versus lefties in 2010, for example. That will go over well against Cliff Lee and Sabathia in a seven game series in New York.

I am one of the few here that didn't doubt him. I watched him closely in the Spring Training and the early season, and I posted that he still had the best bat speed of anyone on the team other than Youkilis who has a very short stroke. His problem was timing and pitch recognition not a loss of bat speed.

im not saying you did say that just remind of this when we are complaining. I didnt doubt him either. i thought he just needed to work on his timing.

The point that I was making is that Ortiz in decline is almost as good as the younger guy in his prime. We forget how good he was. The only reason his stats are declining is that he can no longer hit lefties. Against tough lefties, Cameron can DH or Tek.

If he still has his bat speed, he'll be alright, and we can remind the others that they were ready to cut him 2 years ago.:D

This. 1,000 times this.

How you can try to compare A-Gon's production in San Diego considering his splits and the stadium to Ortiz and his inability to hit lefties is beyond me.

Coming to Fenway will take away 5 HR's and add 10-15 doubles and 20 points to the BA.

Pretty much everything out at Petco is out at Fenway. The doubles point is legit, but he won't lose any HR production at Fenway relative to Petco.

They have got to break the cord and platoon Ortiz. Cameron is the obvious DH against lefties.

I think you'll see Ellsbury in CF this year, even without Werth.

I'm very happy Youks moves to 3B' date=' and AdGon takes his place at 1B--on my fantasy team. Youks has just made 3B stronger for fantasy.[/quote']

Meanwhile, back on Earth... Adding Werth to the lineup will guarantee freakish growth of the Franconer Boner.

L/R/L/R/L/R/L/S/S ... Kaboom.

Hearing about this Agon trade f***s my ear pussy just right.

The Gonzalez acquisition was huge and even with the acquisition it sounds like Boston still has a legit shot at signing Werth as well.

SI.com's Jon Heyman indicates that the Red Sox could still go after free agent Jayson Werth even after acquiring Adrian Gonzalez.

Carl Crawford might be too expensive and would make the Red Sox very left-handed heavy, but Werth could still fit within their budget and would offer more balance for the lineup. The former Phillie will likely wind up getting something close to the four-year, $66 million deal Jason Bay received last offseason.

For anyone else hasn't busted a nut yet, here's a hitting chart for Adrian Gonzalez per MLB ballpark. You can play with it (giggity) to see what he's done in each ballpark. Look at his HR, XBH, and Fly Out locations, and then compare that to Fenway's dimensions. Not to mention compare it to the potential of moving in the right field fences about 9 feet for the bullpens.

I guess I need a sperm guard for my computer. ;)

9 ft? Ted Williams just dropped out of his dry ice (liquid nitrogen?) casket.

This guy Heyman has the right contacts. He said yesterday aft on MLB.com that the Red Sox were going in a different direction towards AdGon, when asked about Beltre's comment about wanting to stay in Boston. He knew what was up.

All we need is for news to come out that we signed Werth for an undermarket value and that we traded nameless prospects for a quality bullpen arm and most of us would set new records for number of times masturbating in a single day. Well, except Gom who's current record cannot be broken.

Just got home. This is great news. This is a reasonable trade. Figured on Kelly and Rizzo. No problem with Fuentes being the third guy. Gonzalez alone makes this lineup much stronger. Youk to Third. Theo didn't have to give up Kalish which is huge. He should be in line now to take over for Drew in 2012.

I hope so because that would be awesome.

NL West is 3 parts overly pitcher-friendly, 2 parts overly hitter-friendly. His HR production shouldn't go down, considering the hitter-friendliness of the AL East as opposed to the NL West.

I am a little worried about the PTBNL, but as long as it isn't a high profile guy (which it's almost certain not to be Vitek, Ranaudo, or Brentz) then I'm happy.

Granted, we ALL know that this is not going to be the only move of the Sox offseason, so we should all sit tight, get your popcorn ready, and in my case, try to finish off this 30 rack in one day. Good thing I still have a few cigars left over from University.

Gammons reported it was nobody big. Someone who could be up in the Rule 5 draft.
