That deal fell through. Boston isn't getting Joe Blanton. If they want to help the Phillies clear some payroll they can always get Jimmy Rollins. ;)

I don't think it fell through. And Phillies will clear cap space and it seems that Blanton will be gone.

Ken_Rosenthal

Sources: #Phillies do not plan to trade Ibanez. They have discussed Blanton with multiple teams. #MLB

That was just 30 mins ago. I don't want the Sox to get him but I don't think they're done talking.

I agree that Blanton is gone, but I don't think that there is a chance in hell that he goes to Boston.

Why be negative towards him? Just because he's not an elite talent? He's a roster filler type move. No reason to piss in his Cheerios after the guy just found out he get's to have a shot at playing baseball another season.
If I ever meet him, I'll be nice to him, but that will not change the fact that he stinks.:D

On the topic of the AL West' date=' I wouldn't be surprised if Oakland is a serious contender. They have an outstanding rotation which could be the best in the AL: Cahill/Braden/Anderson/Gonzalez/McCarthy or Mazzaro. If they can get Beltre, their offense isn't so awful either.[/quote']

Mazzaro was traded for David DeJesus, and they have stated they're out of the Beltre sweepstakes.

Ahh. Well they will likely sign Rich Harden too, who struggled last year but we've seen what he can do. Harden and McCarthy should battle for the 5th spot. They've also added DeJesus and Matsui, two very productive hitters.

And do you have a link to Oakland's statement? I remember hearing they withdrew their offer but not that they're definitely not interested.

Actually, you would be correct. It was reported that they withdrew their offer, but nothing about a definitive loss of interest.

I can just imagine the sox offering to help Philly be able to sign Lee in an attempt to screw the Yankees

Exactly, especially if it involves getting a player that the Sox need/could use. That'd help us and screw the Yankees at the same time. I remember talking about this yesterday and Meh thought I was crazy for helping create a monster in Philly, and it looks like the Boston FO agrees with me and would go out of their way to f*** the Yankees. The problem is, I don't think that the Phillies have any player that we'd need/could use.**

**For the record, I mean a player that Philly would want to get rid of to cut payroll. Obviously we could use Lee/Halladay/Oswalt/Hamels but Philly wouldn't want to trade them.

I get the feeling that Beltre isn't interested in playing in Oakland. I remember reading something to that effect.

I think that Oakland is competitive now largely due to "addition by subtraction" - the Rangers became a lot weaker after losing Lee, and to be honest I'm feel their rotation's numbers last season were a bit flukey. Although, I'm also not that high on Oakland's rotation, but I think it's better than Texas'.

I actually expect Oakland's rotation to take a step back in their first season without Curt Young. But they have enough to probably hang around in the division since at the moment their is no clear cut runaway favorite.

I was a bit surprised the other day when I heard we were interested in Joe Blanton. Obviously that has fallen through and we have publicly said it wasn't going to happen, but I thought we'd turn our attention strictly to the bullpen now. If we were to sign or trade for any starting pitcher that we know is available, I would rather we go after Matt Garza. Not sure what he'd cost us, but if Dice-K is the guy we would lose, it wouldn't make sense for TB since they are trying to shed payroll at the moment.

With that said, I'm fine with Dice-K being the 5th starter at the moment and really hope we start to bring in some decent relievers.

Dodgers To Sign Matt Guerrier

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 15 at 9:58am CST]

The Dodgers agreed to sign Matt Guerrier to a three-year deal, according to Newsday's Erik Boland (on Twitter)

Another reliever comes off the board. I'm not a big fan of his.

What the f***??:angry:We have arguably the best lineup in all of baseball and this asswipe goes to the f***ing Dodgers? Whatever. Have fun watching your team get shutout 20 times a year and missing the playoffs Matt!! Douche....

At this point, I'd just give Fuentes whatever he's asking for (except closing rights) and see if we could get Delcarmen back cheap. That should give us a pretty good bullpen (not great), but the way these deals are going it looks like we'd only be able to get one good reliever with our money, and if there's a reliever on the market that I'd overpay for (other than Scott Downs) it would be Brian Fuentes.

The total number of days between Wednesday, December 15th, 2010 and Monday, February 14th, 2011 is 61 days.

This is equal to exactly 1 month and 30 days.

This does not include the end date, so it's accurate if you're measuring your age in days, or the total days between the start and end date. But if you want the duration of an event that includes both the starting date and the ending date, then it would actually be 62 days.

The total time span from 2010-12-15 to 2011-02-14 is 1,464 hours.

This is equivalent to 87,840 minutes.

You can also convert 61 days to 5,270,400 seconds.

Today is 12/15/2010 and 2/14/2011 is exactly 61 days from today.

I generally don't get the ST juices flowing until after the Super Bowl. But it has started a little earlier this year. Trying to pace myself though, because I know this place slows down around the holidays :D

The Red Sox are having discussions with RHP Dan Wheeler.

Yep. I'd be fine with bringing him in to work in the 6th-7th before turning it over to Bard and Pap late.

4:23pm: The Red Sox are having ongoing discussions with Dan Wheeler about a possible deal, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com. One of Speier's sources is optimistic about the negotiations.

I agree' date=' but at the price these relievers want (and are getting) we might only be able to get one. At that point I'd take Fuentes and try to fill out the roster on the scrap heap.[/quote']

Considering what some players have gotten, 4 million a year is chump change-- especially for guys that don't cost arbitration picks. It seems like market value for just about all players has gone up about 25% in the last year.

Wheeler has been consistent, so I think that makes him a great 7th inning guy. Plus, he's another Rhode Islander, and an AL East player-- hard to argue with him for 2 years right now.

The Red Sox had offered Guerrier a 2 year deal, but the Dodgers offered him a 3 year deal so Guerrier took it.

The Red Sox are looking at Crain, Fuentes, and Wheeler. MLBTR also reports that Joe Smith, Rafael Perez, and Justin Masterson could all be on Boston's radar. Nick Carfado reports that the A's and Mariners are listening to offers for their relievers.

Fuentes.

But I'd take Masterson back. Can he get lefties out?
