That's 22 unless I'm counting wrong, my GF is blabbing in my ear so I could be off lol. 3 spots left. You could go with 3 more BP arms, or 2 and add a 1B/OF type. Looks doable to me :D

We don't have Martin' date=' so technically it's 21 with 4 spots left.[/quote']

Well this discussion started with how you would carry 3 catchers on a the roster.

?

Four arms in the pen?:lol:

So three slots are open. How do you use them? At least two should be bp.

That leaves one for a position player, at least.

A third catcher makes no sense.

As reported by Edes' date=' Sox want Martin as catcher not in utility role[/quote']

Undoubtedly they would say so, if they were paying Martin to be a catcher and a utility guy they'd have to give up more.

Works better if the idea is to start Martin and play Salty as a bench C/1B. Then you have all your positions covered and can fill all 3 empty slots with RP.

BSN just meant that that's what we have at the moment (although we do have Atchison and Kalish etc)' date=' so it might map out what we need to get to get to 25 players on the roster.[/quote']

Kallish will most likely start the year in Pawtucket.

I'm down with re-signing Atchison. Unless there are three better options.

By the way, it appears that the Sox have only about $10. Mil. to spend to remain under the cap after signing Crawford.

The Sox need , from what I can see, three bp arms and maybe one RHH OF.

How does that happen?

My math may be flawed.

After all, I'm old and drink only the finest vodka.;)

Already have 2 RHH on roster as possible backups depending on how you count the switch-hitting Nava. Between him and Cameron you're not smtarting for backups.

Atchison is already re-signed.

10M for 3 RP's should be doable. Also don't forget that Junichi Tazawa is probably in the mix next year if you need a cheap option.

I think Crawford's signing, along with AdGon, will help them to sign some of the secondary free agents.

They will want to play in Boston.

Buster Olney

Heard this: Boston is viewed as the front-runner for Russell Martin at this point, according to folks with knowledge of the talks.

This is why I believe Mike Cameron is on his way out of town, despite what the FO says. His 8MM is two bullpen arms right there and if we're just looking for a RH OF off the bench, there are cheaper options available.

Xavier Nady might take a lesser contract to re-establish his value. Austin Kearns is also available. If you can get one of these guys for less than 2 million, you still generate 6 million to go out and get a reliever (or two).

Heard this: The Angels' offer to Carl Crawford was $108 m. over 6 years,or $18 m. a year. Which means the Red Sox offer was much higher.

They are running out of RHd bats. Beginning to look like the Yankees. LOL.

... or you could promote Nava, count on him to improve on what for a backup was a fairly solid rookie campaign, and save 7.7 million to go and load the bullpen.

Sign Bill Hall as a bullpen arm

Heh.

Yeah yeah I know, it's never going to happen, but one of these days I wish someone would get brave enough to experiment with an IF/RP and if they did, Hall would be a fair candidate. 89 in the zone isn't half bad and he hit his spots for the most part. Showed a glimpse of what he coulda been if his development had carried him in the other direction -- which considering his struggles with consistency since 2006, maybe it should have done.

Funny, one or two years ago, no one would have believed that would be the lineup. Imagine if Salty had turned out the prize they thought he would. Weren't they asking for Buchholz a year ago?

I'm not sure if it was as recent as a year ago, but the Rangers constantly wanted Buchholz for Saltalamacchia, but Buchholz's stock went up and Saltalamacchia's stock went down like it had an extra chromosome.
