The Padres have acquired Jason Bartlett from the Rays for relievers Adam Russell and Cesar Ramos.

Nice pick up for the Padres. They should sign Hoffman and see what they can get for Bell once a couple more of these reliever sign and teams start to get desperate.

so you want the yankee's to acquire him? I dont

I don't want them so sign him. But I pretty much figure they are going to anyway. The Yankees adding Lee doesn't make them invincible. They have a 2nd year guy in Hughes, AJ off an awful season and blank. I'll still take Boston's rotation.

I don't want the Yankees to sign Lee, but I think that they will get Lee regardless of what I want. I just hope that it takes enough money to effectively keep them from getting Crawford as well. I think half of Crawford's value comes him NOT playing on the Yankees (the other half being what he can do for us)

their losing half their team

They definitely have their obstacles to overcome. But their replacements they have are yes young and unproven, but look to have a good amount of talent. They may not be the Rays of the last couple years. But I don't expect them to be the Orioles either.

What? If Ordonez and Beltran cost the same' date=' moving Dice-K to the Mets means you save $20 mil over two years; acquiring Ordonez then trading Dice-K means you save $20 mil over two years, maybe minus a bit depending on the suitor.[/quote']

And again, why would the Mets want Dice K? They would be moving Beltran for salary relief and would eat salary to do so. Taking Dice K back negates the whole point of the trade for them. What incentive do they have to do that?

Joe McDonald:

The open workout Magglio Ordonez had today was meant for only the Tigers. No other teams were invited.

In case anybody was wondering why the sox were not there earlier.

Because they would use that salary relief to sign another pitcher.

Those oil folks down in Texas are liable to match anything the Yankees offer for Lee. The good sign is all the media types have the guy in pinstripes. They are usually wrong.

Not a peep about what if Lee decides to stay close to home? He'll still get more money than his family will ever spend. Why go to the media cauldron in NY?

I don't think the Sox will pay 2/20 for Ordonez. No way. They are better off bidding for Crawford or Lee.

A bigger priority than a rhd bat is the bullpen. They have Cameron and McDonald.

The best deal for the Sox is if Crawford goes to LA and Lee stays in Texas. Then they can just spend some money on the bullpen and another catcher.

My hunch is Crawford will avoid the AL East, and Lee will stay in Texas. His agent leaving the meetings and going back to Arkansas may not be a good sign for NY.

Giving Cliff Lee seven years and 163 is pretty insane. he will be 32 next year so by the end he will be 39. 7/163. He will get it but I hope not from the Sox. I would have to assume that he will decline in his ability by the end of the deal.

I still feel like it would have to be more than a contract swap if the Mets want to get anything at all. But I guess it depends on how much they value Dice-K.

Would prefer Beltran's defense and age to Ordonez's, but a one-year deal for Ordonez would work pretty well. If he wants two years, I feel that our current OF crew would be a better option going forward, although I've heard that Theo wants to start Kalish at AAA next year.

So they are going to pay Ordonez and Ortiz $22 mil to DH next year? I don't get it.

They have Cameron to play LF. What do they need Ordonez for, except to DH?

As for Kalish, the kid should stick. He hit .250 his first year in Boston. Crawford hit .259 his rookie year. I can't believe they want to hide him in AAA and play the likes of two 38 yos Ordonez and Cameron. The kid should play against RHp.

They should stick to upgrading the bullpen.

You can't be too rational here. 7/136 is insane, too. FA salaries are out of control. You look at the value of keeping Lee out of NY.

A lot of his stuff is based off location though, right? If it is he shouldn't decline that much. He already doesn't throw that hard and he probably won't lose too much speed on his stuff, so if he could still pinpoint pitches he ought to be alright. A lot of lefthanders seem to pitch a long time. I'd still be worried about giving him 7 years and a ton of money, but 6 with some options I'd be fine with if the sox did it

that's exactly it, they don't want him to just play every so often, they want him to play everyday and develop more.

Johnny Damon told Lou Merloni of WEEI.com that he would love to play in Boston again. He vetoed a trade that would have sent him from Detroit to Boston this summer, but he says things are different now that he's a free agent.

“Obviously, I’d love to return to Boston,” he said. “I loved playing there, and I think it would be a perfect fit, with the chance to win again. I know I could do that in Boston.”
