    • Kalish should be traded for a franchise caliber hitter.

Hell yeah so I can see him do another crazy ass front flip catch in the outfield. What a beauty that was.
Just to put this thread in context, it was created in August 2010, so next year is this year, and the answer is clearly no.

Ryan Kalish, CF, BOS

News: Boston has shut down outfielder Ryan Kalish for the rest of the season, reports ESPN Sunday. This decision comes from manager Bobby Valentine. Kalish is still bothered by two operations he had last year.

Analysis: Kalish was already seeing his usage limited and had not seen an at-bat in a game since Sept. 11 against New York. He finishes the season with a .229 batting average and five RBI over 96 at-bats. Kalish had low-end Fantasy value and can be ignored across the board now.

Kalish has had 2 lost seasons. It's probably time to pull the plug on him.

He'll be big time trade bait for a team looking to buy-low. And odds are, he'll go somewhere else and be a 20/20 guy and stay healthy for the rest of his career. Lose-lose really, but maybe he'll bring in a good return.

Given that some are lamenting the loss of Josh Reddick and Brandon Moss, I'd say it would be stupid to "pull the plug" on Ryan Kalish. He's 24 years old.

He hasn't been able to work on his game in two seasons. Basically, his development has been arrested. Physically, he still seems to be damaged. He's had shoulder and neck surgery. These are not minor procedures. Do the Sox keep him at AAA another season? If the Sox re-sign Ross, where would Kalish play? Would they hand him the open OF position? Being a 4th OFer would not help his development. I don't see them handing him a starting position.

 I don't think people have been seriously lamenting Brandon Moss getting traded in 2008.

He's going to AAA, but I wouldn't bank on him for our future plans. If he forces the issue with Cody Ross, then we can always trade one of the two.

Seriously. It's like pining for Carl Pavano.

That's where I seem him starting the season unless he is part of some trade package.

I'm starting to think that Boston is just not a good environment for some players. When they leave, they immediately become superstars. Its painful, but the reality is that just because they became an elite player somewhere else, doesn't necessarily mean that they would become an elite player in this environment and with this park.

Totally agree with this.

In some cases, the Sox have traded away players who had some level of success here at one point (Masterson, Lowrie, Murphy to an extent) for short term fixes who are no longer here and/or have been tremendous busts (V Martinez, Melancon, Eric Gagne).

But the market definitely has an effect on player performance from the prospect level all the way up to the established veteran level. Obviously, the organization shouldn't shy away from the players with the highest potential in the draft if there are questions about their ability to play in this market. As draft picks or even international signings, it's very difficult to predict who will be able to play in this market, let alone if they will even make it to the majors. Established veterans on the other hand, should be looked at with much scrutiny if they haven't performed in a high intensity market. As we have seen with the Lackeys, Crawfords, and Gonzalez's, there is just to commit in $ and/or prospects/draft picks for players who might seriously underperform expectations.

Instead of committing so much money to other team's players, this organization would do itself a favor to place higher value on their own free agents. After all, these are players who have proven it HERE. Provided it fits with the long term plan, it might be better to overpay our own FA and get slightly less production than to vastly overpay for another team's free agent and get average or below average production.

He should not make the team next year.

If he does, we are screwed.

Yeah, having an athletic 5th OF who can be a defensive sub for all 3 OF positions would ruin the season...

I really wouldn't mind him being the 4th or 5th OFer. He is good defensively and he can run and steal a base. He has a good arm too. However, I don't think they will keep him on the roster as a backup. They probably will not think it is best for his development. If he makes the roster, it will probably be as a starter. In that case, I agree with SCM. We'd be screwed, because it would mean that the FO did very little to upgrade the roster.

To me "makes the team" isn't the same thing as being given a starting position.
I didn't say that it was. You are such an ornery person that it is difficult to even agree with you.

I think the team would love to see Kalish show signs of his bat coming around and if he does show signs early next year that his shoulder has come around and he is hitting, I think Kalish will make the team and get playing time in RF.

I really don't think they want Ross playing much in RF. I think they want Ross in LF and in that regard I agree with them. Assuming they bring Ross back I want him playing in LF, not RF.

If Kalish can hit enough to hold down the spot it would be great for the Sox to have him in RF for significant playing time.

If he can stay healthy, Kalish is going to be a good starting outfielder in the major leagues. I think he will put up Drew and Nixon type production, offensively and defensively. He plays aggressively so there will likely be injuries.

Funny how much is coming to a head for a number of the younger Sox guys. You would like to give Iggy more time but he has somebody climbing right his backside. So it may well be now or never next season for Iggy.

I think they really need Kalish in RF. If cannot do it, the Sox probably end up trying to find somebody that can. I have so many fingers crossed on some of the young everyday players that I don't have anything left to cross.

Kalish, C'mon kid...ya' gotta' know we are pullin' for ya'. Set as a fielder.....please hit enough to be here

WMB, locked into 3rd but honestly still needs to develop as a hitter and as a fielder

Iggy, please God just hit him with a lightning bolt or something. Just hit a little Iggy. He has to learn how to bunt

Lavs, wide swings in hitting performance, does seem to have come along as a fielder. I don't doubt he will be here in 2013. Question mark but I think he will hit.

Ciriaco, honestly doesn't he have to be here at least as the utility infielder? Might share time at short with (dare I think it) Iggy

Nava, I doubt we see him even as a sub. Depends on how the OF shapes up and if there is a spot. The "dime" seemed to find a way to get here every year.

Gomez, I think this is the kind of guy you have got to gamble on. I don't even want to pay short FA money to Loney although he has a great glove. We need more hitting from 1st though. If he keeps fielding decently, ya' gotta' try him I think

Man o' man, that is a lotta kids to depend on even excluding Nava. I can see the Sox trying to bring somebody in for SS, possibly 1st, possibly Napoli for additional catching and 1st. The rest again other than Nava probably play in 2013. In a perfect world, the Sox spend some of that cash on a first rate SS but I don't even know who might be out here for them. At the very least, I think Iggy comes up late in the year or starts the year here or gets traded. Not sure they have an choice. Probably time to live with his hitting for awhile and see if he can develop more as a ML hitter here. I could live with that decision with Ciriaco here as well and getting time at SS.

Kalish is not fully recovered from his injuries and that is why he is not playing. The way he plays the game is why he got hurt in the first place. If he is healthy then he competes for a job next year. I think there is going to be a lot of competition for jobs in the spring.

The list of ss is not very good and the best one has a club option. Unless you want to trade for Elvis Andrus you might as well give someone here now a shot at ss to start the year.

Kalish played hurt the whole year, it wasn't a no show. If healthy (which is a big if), he gets a shot in the spring but with only a play great make the team deal. If healthy I saw him as a Trot Nixon kind of a player.

Like others have said: as a backup it would be fine. As a starter, probably not... unless he absolutely is tearing the cover off the ball during spring training. I think Kalish has the skillset to be a very good MLB player. I'm just with a700 that if he comes back as a starter that means they didn't do what they needed to do in the offseason.

I actually think the player who should be platooning should be Cody Ross. The media and many fans act as if the Sox absolutely must sign him for multiple years. I agree he'd be a nice player to have, but not as a starter. An .816 OPS driven by a 1.017 OPS against LHP has platoon writtn all over it. Unfortunately, he's going to want to start. A .311 OBP against RHP doesn't give me confidence that he's a must sign.

He may be a relatively important guy to sign given a lack of options, but he's not an all-star or even close to it IMO.

Looks like TS is getting its wish. I'm ok with it as he can play above average OF at all 3 spots. He showed that he belonged in 2010. I hope he can return to form. He could be a decent platoon with Gomes if he could stay healthy.

Something Ive always noticed about Boston fans regarding their prospects........

Boston fans always think they are smarter than the rest, that they can spot a diamond in the rough.

It happened with Bob Zupcic, Scott Cooper, Phil Plantier, Ken Ryan, Frankie Rodriguez, Joe Hudson, Jeff Suppan, Alex Delgado, Trot Nixon, Michael Coleman, Donnie Sadler, Jose Malave, Steve Lomasney, Jin Ho Cho, Robinson Checo, Brian Rose, Wilton Veras, Paxton Crawford........the list goes on and on.

Ryan Kalish is, at best....Darren Bragg.....is hes lucky. In fact, Darren Bragg had much better minor league numbers, and he was never more than a 4th OF.

True about Bragg. Didn't he hit a grand slam off Randy Johnson at Fenway? I liked him as a 4th OFer.

Kalish probably has one more yr to prove he can play at the big league level. If this kid languishes in the minors or has a prolonged tryout and fails in the bigs, he'll be on another team next yr
