BTW - Rotoworld has taken some cheapshots at Francona over the years, but this is silly. Beckett took his own toll on his E.R.A. - Not his manager.

Sure, Francona left Beckett in longer in his last start than needed, but tonight? It was already difficult for a manager to go to his tired 'pen after just 3+ innings. The blame is all on Beckett for the position he put his manager in. Roto's site is focused on the Fantasy baseball aspect of things and poor Josh Beckett's numbers taking a hit. Francona has a tired-out bullpen to worry about...

I agree, the pen had been used a lot lately and it was actually a smart move by Francona to see if Beckett could throw a couple scoreless innings. Its not Francona's fault that Beckett didn't have it and surrendered those two extra runs.

Ok so maybe we shouldn't push the panic button quite yet.

Josh Beckett after five starts last season:

2-2, 7.22 ERA, 28.2 IP, 36 H, 24 R, 23 ER, 16 BB, 31 K, .303 OBA

Josh Beckett after five starts this season:

1-0, 7.22 ERA, 28.2 IP, 37 H, 24 R, 23 ER, 13 BB, 20 K, .316 OBA

Terry Francona, John Farrell and the pitcher himself all contend that he is not injured. That his velocity is consistent and within his normal range suggests that is true. Beckett appears only to have a bad case of the stinks.

The good news? He was 15-4, 3.33 over his final 27 starts last season. That clock starts ticking on Sunday in Baltimore.

Beckett's problem is location ...it is terrible.. Had he hit the spots Tek was giving him I would not be discussing this. For some reason he has struggled early in recent years... I really cannot explain it. His velocity is there...the movement on the 2 seamer and drop on curve is there though it(12-6 curve) isn't consistently there and almost never over for a strike). I would like to see Beckett develop a splitter because his changeup has no movement and really doesn't have much velocity differential in relation to his fastball.. His change is usually 89-90 MPH..fastball 94-96. A splitter would come in at 84-86 providing more movement and a better change of pace. It doesn't help that Josh's change-up is as straight as his 4 seam fastball.l. His other pitch is a spinning curve...A splitter has little spin. In terms of spin, a splitter is between a knuckle and a fastball..it "tumbles" to the plate...Hitters look for the spin..or lack thereof for quick pitch recognition-- which obviously is essential for making consistent, solid contact. It always help to throw another variable in for the hitters to think about. I think the addition of a splitter would drive Beckett into the upper echelon of MLB pitchers...provided he can learn it. Pelfrey developed a splitter over the winter and he has been nearly unhittable.

So Beckett is gonna catch fire and then starting sucking in September like he did last year too?

He will with that attitude.

Another uplifting night from our Texan on the mound... oh well.

Better get this figured out soon' date=' s*** is ridiculous. He's being paid in large part to beat the Yankees.[/quote']So far the only game that they have beaten the Yanks was a Beckett start. He sucked that night, but the team did win that night. Beckett also pitched a phenomenal game against the Rays, but his defense and offense gave the game to the Rays. In that game, there was a misjudge fly ball that fell behind Hermida, a ground ball lost in the lights by Beltre and another pop fly hit. He gave up one legit hit in that game, struck out 8 and walked 1. That was a phenomenal game against the best team in the league. I am not worried about Beckett. He'll produce if healthy. He'll win 15 + games, k close to 200 and have stats comparable to last season. The problem is that these other two teams have jumped out to tremendous starts, and they are going to be hard to catch.

You can't use opening day to defend Beckett when he did nothing to contribute to the win. Didn't even go 5 IP and gave up 5 runs!

He would rather repeat for the millionth time that the Red Sox are not as good as the Yankees or Rays, as if this is some sort of revelation, than focus on what the point of the thread is.

The problem with Josh Beckett's inconsistency. And, all too frequent starts now displaying an alarming lack to miss bats.

Just not allowing 5 + runs for awhile would be a start.

Holy f***, and you have the gall to call anyone an apologist? So what if he was good in, what, one game this year, maybe two. They are in a hole, as you keep reminding us on a daily basis, in large part because Beckett has been, for the most part, s*** this year. No excusing that. You can't be serious with this, Mr "Results" Guy. It's either about the results or it isn't. You couldn't be more hypcritical if you tried.

Wasn't making that point at all. I was just pointing out that there have been terrible problems with this team the other 4 days when Beckett doesn't pitch. I am not worried about him. If healthy, he will find his groove and produce to expectations.

You don't know how, Dutchy/Imperial? We'll catch you if you are stupid enough to post the same pictures of yourself again.

What I found unfortunate about your last banning was that it came right after you had extended an olive branch after one of your more insane moments. It would be a good idea to keep the olive branch extended.

BTW: From your past lives here, you should remember that I am almost never wrong.

I wanted Cliff Lee instead of Beckett. I was in the minority. Maybe not anymore...

Theo probably assumed he will be in pinstripes next year to join his buddy CC and replace Pettitte as he retires

Deflection.

This doesn't make the hypocrisy you've displayed go away.
