They keep pitching to Miggy. Girardi is a friggin idiot!!!

He really is. Considering what the rest of their lineup looks like, there's no reason to continue to pitch to Cabrera. But Girardi is absolutely horrendous, so it doesn't surprise me in the least.

This feels like the kind of day when the Yankees' offense is going to pull their disappearing act. If they don't win today, this will have been their sixth straight series that they failed to win. I wonder when the last time that has happened.

Shouldn't matter, but Granderson has to score on that. With the ball hit that well, and Jackson playing that shallow, Granderson needs to know it isn't going to be caught.

Now a bad at bat by Pena, as that base running error looms a bit larger.

And now Mitre is trying to give them some life. I like Mitre, but he's way too inconsistent.

EDIT: But then he throws pitches like that, a really nice 3-2 change, and he reminds me why I like him.

EDIT 2: And it's night and day, as he makes an absolutely awful 1-2 pitch to Jackson. Although I put a lot of that on the pitch selection, more than the execution.

And the Yankees win, and another day is ticked off the calendar.

BTW, for all the Hughes naysayers, he's really been money this yr and very good of late. He's thrown 3 straight QS's and his August ERA is 3.12. His overall season line has been money as well.

15-5 3.90ERA 116K in 134.2IP and a 1.21WHIP. Very, very solid

I agree, over the objection of some one here. The thing most people arent realizing is that this is Hughes' first full yr as a starter in the bigs, even though he's had those prior runs as a part time starter and reliever. He's had to expand his arsenal again after shortening it for a season last yr. He came out lights out, then the league adjusted. The biggest step a rookie can make is the second adjustment and he's starting to show signs of that. He's becoming less reliant on the cutter, he's throwing more 4 seamers on the edge of the zone and he's starting to locate his breaking pitches.

Perhaps the best start I saw from him came in the Boston game. His curve sucked and his FB was right around 90-91, but he made it work by hitting his spots and really changing speeds. He even mixed in a bunch of changeups and held a pretty tough offense to 2 runs through 6 innings with no stuff at all. That tells me that this kid is ready to take the next step. I dont expect that this season as fatigue is going to set in for a starter who hasnt started this late into the season. But he's gonna make for one hell of a starter and next season, he should be a top 10 starter in the AL.

Top 10? That's a bit bold, but you've shown little fear in your bold predicitons for Yankees in the past. I think he's got quite a bit of work to enter that group. Hellickson is a better shot to make that jump next year. Like y228 says, he needs an out pitch before he makes the leap.

Really? The kid has 3 career starts in the bigs while Hughes has over 300 innings.

What does that have to do with anything? By that logic, Tim Wakefield should be the best pitcher in baseball.

Hellickson looks like the real deal.

That's just dumb.

I agree that Hellickson looks good and is going to succeed in the league but you just don't step into the league and become a top 10 guy.

It's your reasoning, not mine, I just took the road to the end.

Some do. Lincecum did. Price had about as many starts last year as Hellickson will at the end of this year. Lester kind of did, when he came back from his cancer treatments. There are many, many more examples. Your reasoning is what's off.

Dunno

Stephen Strasburg is doing pretty darn good so far

Wrong. Guys like Price and Lincecum had at least 2/3's of a season under their belt. Hellickson will get nowhere close to that. Have they even said he will remain in the rotation? I'm not quite sure what his innings cap is this year.

This is silly. All of them will pitch about 1/2 a season (give some, take some) before their first full year, which was clearly the point. If you want to go the semantical route because your point is falling flat on its face, so be it, but it's pretty transparent.

Hughes has the out pitch, he just hasnt mastered it yet. His curve is filthy when he locates it, the problem this yr has been inconsistent command. His change has shown flashes as well, although he doesnt use it enough. I think with a full yr under his belt, I expect him to tighten up his location of his curve and be a bit more comfortable with the change

If it's not consistent and he can't command it......he doesn't have it.
