His OPS+ was 111. How is that pedestrian? Only a handful of SS's had better years. One thing I think is being overlooked. Scutaro nearly doubled his highest walk total this year.

That's no accident. It means he's finally become a patient hitter. A little late in his career, yes, but again 57 BBs to 90 BBs is no accident - and I don't think it's an aberration either.

On the other hand, the .400+ SLG probably is an aberration. But he could coneivably do it again playing at Fenway.

I really think the disgust towards this signing has been overblown. If Scutaro provides solid defense and is league average at the plate, he will help this team.

Finally? He is 34, not 28. Tejada was a better option at only 1 year older.

You think he was the best option?

Overblown, maybe right.....but isn't it also possible that it was a fluke since hes had at least 5 seasons with over 400 AB's?

If Tejada's defense had been better, he certainly would have been the better option. But he could be declining fast in the field.

It's definitely possible, but I choose to look at his much improved plate discipline as a sign of him figuring things out.

Scutaro has always had solid plate discipline. He simply didn't make consistent enough solid contact to post high OBP totals.

As much as I don't like this deal, I guess he is a step up from AGon, and the price is not that high.

He's an average defender who's average with the stick.

A-Gon was an above average defender who could supply something with the stick. Seeing as how SS is primarily a defensive position, i just don't see the upgrade.

Really? Sub .300 OBPs are way past suck. We've seen this play before.

Who pined for Scutaro? I simply don't understand what the hand wringing is over this deal, saying "IT'S THA WORST EVAHHHH" or anything like that.

He's an average player. If he can be average offensively and defensively, it will give the Sox something they haven't had in 5 years.

Not too difficult to grasp.

Overrated. Pretty sure they gained a compensatory pick for Wagner as well.

Great defense at SS is good though.

You've been all over him since the deadline.

So?

Listen, if they sign a couple more type A's. I'll gladly eat crow. But i sincerely doubt they sign more than one.

Gonzalez is not a great defender, so that point is moot. And if you pimp defense this much, I find it funny that you advocate Tejada.

He's a better player than Gonzalez and was in the midst of an excellent year (some call it a career year, but I digress) and would have filled a need.

I mean, I cannot see why there is so much hand wringing over this signing. 2/11 is chump change.

Of course you can't.

Tejada is bad in the clubhouse, and he is a fat SS. I don't like him.

Obviously this is not super important right now since the team needs to shore up 3b and other issues, but the utility role can be a real important piece of the puzzel. Current who does everyone think has the inside track on the utility role? Lowrie if he is healthy? Green if he is brought back? or Tug Hulett, the newly aquired guy from kc who has not been given much of a chance yet at the pro level? did I forget any body?
Posted
I'd still like to bring back Green. I think that for the money you could do a lot worse, and he didn't embarrass himself at SS last year.
Posted
But not in April, apparently. Down the stretch if Green or Hulett or whoever is hurting us though, I would expect to see Lowrie -- maybe by late May early June if things go really well.
Posted

I say we go with Hulett. I have looked at his last few seasons in AAA and he has raked at times with pretty decent power for a guy of his stature. We should give someone who we have not seen yet a shot. from what I have read on other boards he's a gritty ball player that will give 110% all the time. Read that he was on the USA team that just won the world cup( team made up of AAA and AA players) and hit a homerun in the championship game against Cuba. He also has baseball lineage(SP). His dad Tim Hulett Sr. played 12 seasons in the big leagues and his younger brother Jeff is in the minor leagues with Houston.

Some guys just need a shot to play. Im not saying he is going to come in and take anybodys job, but the utility role is ripe for the picking on this team.

The concern with Hulett is his ability to back up SS. We've got an aging player there who's going to need occasional rest, so having a guy who can play acceptable D at short is more than usually imporant. Hulett is an offensive 2Bman at heart and that really leaves it an open question whether you play Hulett at SS, or Hulett at 2B and Pedroia at SS

Neither option seems acceptable.

He's certainly better than Scutaro.

Tejada is no longer a shortstop. Do you watch baseball? He lacks the ability to be a legitimate shortstop at this point in his career.

Posted

That said, we could use a 3B, now couldn't we? And while Tejjada can't play SS regularly without getting exposed, he could probably cover Shortstop sporadically and be fine.

Just saying.

You've watched Tejada on TV, and only a couple times. I see him working out here, and playing SS in intra-squad games. You're just talking for the sake of talking, and that's all i have to say about that.

Hulett can play shortstop and im tired of seeing a soft handed weak slap hitting green play at all! I take a hurt lowrie and Hulett anytime over Green.

Sox are looking at right handed hitting outfielders such as Xavier Nady. Would this mean they are looking for a platoon mate for Hermida, and include Ellsbury in an Adrian Gonzalez trade?

EDIT: I meant to put this in the offseason thread

He'd also be an offensive weapon off the bench against LHP. He had an .831 OPS against them last year, which is pretty good.
