Mariners Designate Gaby Hernandez For Assignment

Righty Gaby Hernandez was designated for assignment to make room for Ryan Garko, according to a Mariners press release.

 

Hernandez, 24 in May, posted a 6.0 K/9, 3.0 BB/9, and 5.23 ERA in 146.3 Triple A innings last year. He was acquired from the Marlins for Arthur Rhodes at the '08 trade deadline. The Marlins had acquired Hernandez from the Mets for Paul Lo Duca in December of '05. Baseball America ranked Hernandez 21st among Mariners prospects heading into the '09 season, but he didn't crack their top 30 in the brand new 2010 Handbook.

Solid deal for the Giants. They finished their arbitration negotiations with Lincecum and finalized a 2-year/$23M deal. For a 2-time CY winner, that's not bad at all.

Considering what the Giants are paying Zito, Lincecum can't be ecstatic about this. The Giants saved a lot of money, but I'm willing to bet when free agency rolls around in a few years, Lincecum will jump ship.

Boras is becoming less and less useful. He really only has a one-track mind in which he exploits a ballooning MLB market by waiting teams out until they cave on ridiculous contract demands. In the modern economic market, his strategy is actually hurting his free agents. Teams are signing players to reasonable contracts, not bloated ones anymore.

I'm guessing he agreed to it precisely because he wanted to avoid arbitration. That can't be a pleasant experience. But when it sinks in how much he is getting ripped off compared to Barry f***ing Zito or Zambrano or Verlander or Felix, he may become a little bitter.
