I highly doubt that Wang goes to the Red Sox. You know who I think would really go for him? The Mets.

Big ballpark. Good infield defense. National League.

Guy was tailor-made for a pitchers park in the NL.

Tailor-made for the NL eh? I hear he's quite the base runner.

Again, you are going to tell me what I think. I was psyched about getting Beckett, and the only question I had was whether he was a # 1 or a #2. I felt that there was a good chance that he would be better than Schilling in 2006. He was a disappointment in 2006 because of the HR balls and his stubborn pitch selection.

You have been pretty consistent on liking Beckett. I have been too. Few who see his arm and presence could think he's not a good pitcher, even when he struggled historically.

Why not look at it from a park neutral point of view. By OPS+ it's:

Gonzalez - 151

Holliday - 144

Bay - 134

I think Gonzalez is about average in the field, so Holliday gets up toward his overall run contribution when you consider both sides of the ball. So, I agree, and I've been an advocate of them signing Holliday all along. That said, if they can get him for Clay + Kelly/Westmoreland, then they should....along with signing Holliday. That's a dynamite lineup, and they can take a shot at replacing Buchholz with an injury flyer on Sheets.

From what I've seen, Gonzalez is much better than average in the field. I'd say he's one of the best defensive first basemen in the game.

What are you talking about?

The last three years, he's had a UZR/150 of -2.6, -6.2, and 3.4.

He's a terrible fielder. :harhar:

[For those of you who don't realize, this is a case of extreme sarcasm].

Most new age stats are pretty neat, but I'd have to agree about UZR. Fielding is just hard to quantify. I'd like to know who the people are who rate UZR. Are they scouts? Scorekeepers? Sabermetricians?

... And when we acquired him in 2006, I certainly don't think he fell into the "low risk/high value" category that I despise so much with the likes of Wade Miller, Penny, Smoltz and others.

Source: Free-agent P John Lackey to take physical with #RedSox. Bos apparently moving on to 2nd choice after Jason Bay. Working to confirm.

Bye Buchholz?

John Lackey is a free agent , he only cost money

I think he is under the impression that if we sign Lackey, we would have Beck, Lester, and Lackey so we could move Bucholz in a trade for an infield piece.

We know Lackey costs money, but signing him opens up the possibility to trade Buch for A-Gon.

We went over it a couple pages back. The only way AGonz or any other elite hitter comes is if we find another adequate starter to take Buchholz's place in the rotation (who would presumably be in the deal). Well Lackey is that and more.

This is the way the off-season works. The Red Sox talk about a player for weeks...and the Yankees quietly go and get that player in a fast strike.

I'd be surprised if you get Lackey.

Tex never took a physical for Boston

If you do get Lackey, you'll have a solid 1-2-3. Still need to replace Bay though.

It makes no sense for them to trade Gonzalez at this point. Not unless they restock their entire farm system.

I think it makes great sense. Bucholz and one more top flight prospect is definitely worth it, and you are losing 2 players for one top 10 hitter in the majors. If they were to sign Lackey, it would essentially be trading one pitcher for another who costs a lot more and getting Gonzalez for one top prospect. If that is the case, I make that move over and over again.

It's worth it...for the Red Sox. Not for the Padres. That's why it isn't getting done.

Also, it's looking more and more like you're going to be stuck with Lowell.

Yeah they need to unload Lowell now.

The Red Sox have offered Aroldis Chapman a major-league deal worth $15.5 million, according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus.

This could be the key piece that allows Kelly to go to SD

Wow, that would be quite a coup. Lackey to the #3 spot solidifies that rotation something fierce and it opens the sox up to deal for AGon.

Lester, Beckett, Lackey, DiceK, and Wakefield is a pretty nice top 5 IMO.

Gom- I would say that while losing Gonzalez might hurt the Pads with their Hispanic fan base, keeping him when they can acquire multiple pieces makes more sense. The Padres will not be able to compete for another 2 years probably. Moving Gonzalez now gets them more talent for the future. They could then spin off Bucholz in a similar move and have an amazing, cheap young team that can be competitive for a few years, like the Rays.

Gonzalez told Hoyer that Boston is his preferred choice and Hoyer is asking for Buchholz and Kelly/Westmoreland but the Red Sox are not willing to do it yet. To me this says the Hoyer has a willingness to not only deal Adrian but that the Sox also have the pieces to get a deal done with its current crop of prospects.

This was very Yankee like in how this signing played out. You have to give credit where credit is due.
