Gentlemen

i saw the oakland a's win 3 titles in a row in a clubhouse that was more like a biker bar than a baseball clubhouse...If you asked the A's to vote reggie off the island in 1974 there wouldve been a unanimous vote to fire him, billy north too....Vida Blue ...Sal Bando Claudelle Washington etc...they hated each other.

i dont want to be defending mannys behavior because its indefensible but my point is you can win with dissent in the clubhouse and its been done time and time again...also, if you go back to the hours after the clubhouse incident with the retired boston detective you will see that it was I who pointed out that this wasnt in fact settled and when the dust did fall to the earth there would be some shocking developments...

I like world series titles more than my wife, i just need her a little bit more.

Losing Ramirez has hurt our team even if they did go on a roll after he left.

when Matt Garza sticks it up your ass in consecutive starts in the pennant you arent a good offensive team, they havent improved in that area and they havent restructured their offense to utilize specific talents...

Bottom line is if Mike Lowell and Dave Ortiz fail to deliver this year and The Jake performs like last year we maybe looking at 3rd place.

JD Drew is a guy who can carry a team when he feels up to it but thruout his career hes been a 100 game a year player and im not concerned why, does it matter why?

is it his kids health

is it his wrist after he got beaned 4 years ago

is it his religion that prevents him from taking needles

who gives a fiddlers f*** anymore,we saw this coming when Theo signed him

its always been this way since he was 18 years old and bailed out on philly to play semi pro ball in Minnesota,he dont know the difference between pain and injury and if he needed these disks operated on last year then the son of a bitch is f***ing us by not getting it done.

that my friends isnt going to help us after we lose the best right handed hitter on the f***ing planet.

Im thinking hes healthy and i got him hitting 5th in a nice lineup that has a little pop,a lot of obp and some clutch hitting, instead I get this ""I feel stiff"" s*** to start my week.

I, for one, find it a bit inconsistent when on the one hand I see someone suggesting maybe the Yankees would be better off without ARod despite his transcendent talent because of the distraction he represents, while on the other I see the same person take the position that the Sox should just learn to deal with Manny because of, well, his transcendent talent. Distractions are either real and something to avoid, or they are baloney and something to be unconcerned about. Whichever it is, I hope they are the same regardless of which team / player is being considered.

To much drama with the guy.. going into the monster in the middle of a game, not running out the bases on a hit.. etc.. to come back and say it was the media? come on.. own it Manny..

Legit injury or not, I'm with Crunchy. Some of us have been saying for...oh, since they time they announced his sighning, that his injury histiry was of major concern.

Seems last year some posters here took issue when we called him the "f" word....fra....fragi....ok, I'll say it...FRAGILE.

Here's the deal...for those of us who root for the name on the front of the uni, Drew's propensity to be out of the line-up...be it a back, shoulder, wrist or vaginal issue...are frustrated. Given this most recent news, I find myself thinking:

hmmm...Bobby Abreu woulda been nice for at least a 1-year trial, no?

Abreu would be an absolute disaster in Fenway in RF...besides do you really think he'd sign to be the 4th OF?

It's cool. It doesn't matter how many huge postseason hits he has for the Sox (most of anyone by my count over the last two seasons)...he'll always be a "pussy" to those who miss Tuff Trot Nixon.

Whatever. I'm done with this argument - you "old school" Sox fans don't seem to care - your "EYES" tell you all you need to know.

I ask again - any of you anti-Drew morons ever have a herniated disk?
It is very painful, but there are minimally invasive surgical techniques to correct this condition. Why wasn't this dealt with in the off season?

Oh really? What's the success rate of surgeries on herniated disks in the major leagues?

As someone that lives with 2 such discs. I can tell you, it's no fun. You have good days and bad. His best bet is to have it cleaned up. It's not that big of a surgery. They also have artificial discs now. From what I have read and discussed with my DR. This seems to be the way to go. The only drawback is. It's a relatively new procedure and most insurance companies don't cover it. I'm sure JD could swing the cost better than I can. It seems to have a pretty high success rate.

My dad has 4 herniated discs and is in constant pain. Anyone who calls Drew a pussy doesn't know what he's talking about.

So here we go again...just like last year. Any mention of frustration over Drew not being able to be counted on to be on the field, and we're somehow calling him a pussy.

As I said, if you're rooting for the name on the front of the jersey it is hard not to be frustrated by a $14m/yr RF who you have to cross your fingers for to be on the field regularly. I like Drew, I like what he brings to the table offensively and defensively and I feel bad for him that he's got these injury issues...but he does have them and the cast of characters that we've rolled out in place of him isn't always a comfort.

As for the Trot comment, the same Sox fans that are concerned over Drew's health are the ones who were always concerned over Trot's ability to be on the field day in, day out. Doesn't matter who the player is or what his perceived toughness is, we're pulling for the TEAM and want a solid contribution from it's starters...they can't contribute when they're on the shelf.

Drew has been a good player since coming to Boston. Yes he fragility can be taxing at times. But it's not like we where not aware of the chances of it at the beginning.

Talking from family experience, herniated disk surgery is a crap shoot at best. The only real way to get better, is to do exercised to strengthen the back muscles.

Again, you are talking about something you don't understand.

I know you are a steroid expert, but now you are a neurosurgeon?

Your f***ing friend had laser surgery?

Is your "friend" a professional athlete?

Do you even know what "laser surgery" entails?

Please, man, I know you are young but STFU sometimes.

Love your passion, brother, but nobody likes a know it all.

No offense to a700hitter, but I believe he is one of the elder statesmen of the board. Is this some sort of Ronald Reagan joke? I don't think you have the cognitive ability to make one.

My post about my friend was anectdotal as were the posts of the others who had stories about family members. It's curious that you didn't jump on them for not being neurosurgeons. I didn't claim any sort of medical knowledge on the the topic. So, you STFU.

My friend is 49 years old and still plays ball although not professionally. I'll bet he could still outrun you. The dude can fly. Are you a professional athlete? The last time I looked that is not a requirement for offering an opinion on this forum. So, again, STFU.

I know what I learned from my friend and from the doctor that my brother consulted who showed us a film on the procedure. I hope that is enough of a basis to post a comment about the outcome of my friend's procedure. Again, STFU.

Tom, I think it is time to demonstrate that you know something and start adding some information to this forum. Otherwise, get lost.

They use a laser to clean up tissue around the disc so that it is not in contact with the nerves.

My wife is an RN in the Surgical ICU. I live with two blown discs in my lower back and have done a lot of research on them. The wife refuses to let me get surgery done on them. The laser surg won't work on me since there is nothing left of my discs. Back surgery is basically a crap shoot. It either works or you end up getting more surgeries. I'm not risking that. That's why I'm looking at getting the replacement discs. Her hospital just started doing that type of surgery and is having great success with it. My insurance don't cover it yet, so I try to do the best I can till it does.

Most of you guys are young and never think of your back. Trust me when I say this. Pray that you never pop a disc. The pain is incredible at times and I have had days where I can't even walk. It takes all I have to play catch with my kid. I was a steelworker and in very good shape when I blew mine out. I can no longer do any type of physical work.

My brother has a back condition for which there is a non-invasive procedure available that has shown great success. His health insurer won't cover it, because it is considered experimental. They will cover the more invasive surgery, which will require extended physical therapy. Further off topic, it baffles me that most health plans will cover trans-gender procedures. They will pay to have a working penis cut off turning a guy into a chick, but other procedures that alleviate physical pain are denied as experimental. It may just be me, but I think that is f***ed up.

Disc surgery is a crap shoot. The mantra is 50% get better, 50% either stay the same or get worse. There are newer surgeries that are proving promising, but they arent risk free either. That being said, someone who can function with their back problems should not go under the knife IMO. Especially someone who relies on their body being in peak condition to perform. Because if the surgery goes wrong, then your livelihood is done.

I'm 26 and I have lower back problems. It sucks. It most certainly hinders my play on the field. But I'm not sure I'd be ready to risk surgery at this point. Maybe down the line somewhere I would give it more consideration. But from what I've read and heard, it does seem the technology is getting better for these types of injuries. Just like an other medical practice there is going to be bumps in the road. But eventually most things become routine, and the risk greatly subsides, while the success grows exponentially.

You knoow what I would love?

The Dodgers to come out and say that they are out of the Manny sweepstakes. Where is he going to go then?

Giants? Don't have the money.

Yankees? Pretty much tapped out.

Cubs? No way, with new ownership coming in.

Red Sox? Funny.

The truth is, Manny has no other choices. As good as he is, what he did in Boston was despicable. Is he worth the money he's asking for? Relative to his peers, no way in hell.

Let Manny come back for one year at 15 million or less, or be gone. It would be nice to see Boras and Manny get taken down a peg. Boras can get a good value on a player who is a top-tier player...but who can't? He's had his pants handed to him for the most part recently. Manny is just an ass.
