You're overselling it. Right now the Tigers have a gaping hole at SS and anothehr at C unless they change their mind about where they're playing Inge next year, and Lugo wasn't a total black hole offensively before he gut hurt so it won't be THAT hard a sell to Detroit that they want Julio Lugo.

 

Most of Detroit's decent players are also encumbered by large contracts. Someone like Carlos Guillen wouldn't come cheap per se, but probably wouldn't cost a primo starter or position plater. I suspect that solving their problem at SS while also providing them a possible solution for their catcher problem (Dan Bard and George Kottaras IOW) could seal the deal.

 

Why would anyone take him when Furcal will come cheaper and is better? Tell you what, you need a CF. Why not trade Lugo for Juan Pierre? See my point? Why take a bad contract? Most teams don't have our money, and the Tigers are trying to shed payroll, not add to it.

Detroit is in no position to sign another FA for the very reasons you highlight in your post. If Furcal leaves LA, which I'm not sure he does, he's probably headed to Baltimore.

 

Oh, and a trade for Lugo won't cost Detroit a draft pick. A somewhat important consideration considering how depleted their farm is.
