ill need a day or so to find optimism for this game

Remember, Shields is being swapped for Kazmir. That should give any non-Rays follower a glimmer of hope.

Shields is so nasty at home and just a great pitcher in general that I'm not looking forward to Game 6, if there even is one. Hopefully Francona will have the balls to start Lester instead of Beckett if we win tomorrow. It'll take a miracle for the Sox to get back to the World Series, but there's always a chance and obviously it's been done before.

If not, well, there's no shame in losing to the Rays. They're damn good.

Agreed. The Rays are a very good team. I do think the Sox would have won this series with a healthy Beckett, Drew, Ortiz, and Lowell however.

As I said in another thread...Dice-K wins... You start Lester in game 6 and Masterson in game 7.

Here's what I think of the swap. With Beckett being awful and injured, teaming him up with Kazmir is a great way to ensure that there is a slugfest at hand. By moving Kaz to game 5, I think Maddon is actually conceding the game knowing that Kazmir isnt right at this point.

The economy. At least there is a bright spot in Dice-K.

October 16th....a bad day in Sox history. 2003 Game 7....and soon to be 2008 Game 5. Not to mention my brother's birthday. Go Rays!

I hope they get to Game 7 for my birthday. Your brother can enjoy watching The Yan... Oh right.

I think Maddon may have made a fatal mistake going with Kazmir. I understand his reasoning and think it may have some merit to save Shields for Game 6. Shields has been extremely tough at home but I think Kaz is out of gas. He has pitched more innings this year than he is accustomed to and his fastball topping out at 91-92 is a clear indication of that. He also doesnlt have his good slider and hasn't for some time. This is not the same Red Sox team that came back against CLE with the same deficit but they still have some very good players who I am quite sure do not want end their season with 3 consecutive home losses. Shields pitching game 5 would be make it very tough for the Red Sox to even reach Game 6.

I honestly believe Maddon feels the Red Sox cannot win Game 6. It is imperative that Francona start Jon Lester in game 6. If the Red Sox can pull it together and send it back to Tampa....I like the Sox chances with Lester in Game 6. Anything can happen in Game 7 and if ever the young Rays were to get a little tight around the collar, Game 7 against the World Champions would be it.

Go Dice-K..keep us afloat.

Am I the only one who thinks Maddon made a good choice?

Kazmir and the ump hate each other [game 6]. He's got his whole pen rested, as Kaz doesn't usually go as deep into games as Shields does. Shields has been much better at home than on the road.

He's putting his best pitcher up against your most ineffective starter this post-season [minus Wake] if it goes back to Tampa.

What's not to like?

Gom, you should now how much a change in momentum can turn around a series.

Don't bank on Beckett being bad forever.

Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,

Because their words had forked no lightning they

The clowns who are talking about the citgo sign are absolute morons.

People forget that it's been lit up 6 hours (give or take during different seasons of the year) since 1940.

s*** GETS OLD ITS CALLED DEPRECIATION (yes, I've been doing accounting today since 1030 and still have a long way to go, sue me for using terms)

If there is a team in all of baseball that can get this done, against a good healthy young team with nothing to lose, it's the Boston Red Sox.

Weather watching

Posted by Matt Porter, Globe Correspondent October 16, 2008 01:45 PM

A peek at the local radar shows showers in the Boston area, with a pocket of clear skies in between. The Weather Channel states the rain should clear for good in the 9 o'clock hour. From Weather.com:

Today: Overcast with rain showers at times. Thunder possible. High near 65F. Winds SSW at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 60%.

Tonight: Rain showers early with clear skies overnight. Low 44F. Winds NW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50%.

So the game looks to be a go. The Red Sox, of course, hope they can win tonight and cause a "reign delay" for Tampa. (Boo. Sorry. Had to.)
