The thing is you'd have to add a better prospect than just nothing. In order to take on Lugo's salary, you'd have to add a solid prospect just to get him off of your team. You'd have to add one of your jewels to get a solid player...and in that case, why trade him? Keep him in case Lowrie sucks it up next year.

You're overselling it. Right now the Tigers have a gaping hole at SS and anothehr at C unless they change their mind about where they're playing Inge next year, and Lugo wasn't a total black hole offensively before he gut hurt so it won't be THAT hard a sell to Detroit that they want Julio Lugo.

 

Most of Detroit's decent players are also encumbered by large contracts. Someone like Carlos Guillen wouldn't come cheap per se, but probably wouldn't cost a primo starter or position plater. I suspect that solving their problem at SS while also providing them a possible solution for their catcher problem (Dan Bard and George Kottaras IOW) could seal the deal.
