BASEBALL IS OFFICIALLY BACK!!

Tomorrow the Sox will start their slate of spring training games with a double header. They will be playing BC at 1:05 and Northeastern at 6:05. Beckett will pitch the first couple of innings against BC (God help those poor college students' souls) and Justin Masterson will get the start against the Huskies.

Should be fun! I don't know if they're televised though...

Huzzah for game threads being back. I call opening day because even though Thumper started Game 4's thread, it was really my mojo that the Sox were running on. :)

Ha ha, fine with me! I'm just pysched for the games.

And yeah, those BC kids are gonna catch some heat from Beckett... Maybe even a little chin music.

Solid game for George Kottaras.

2 for 2, Double, HR, 3 RBIs, Run, Walk

He did hit .308 after the All-Star break. So I will be keeping my eyes and ears out to see if he can put together a nice consistent season in Pawtucket

Bright side for him is that he battled back to retire 6 of the last 7 batters

Clay Buchholz was tagged for four runs and five hits in two innings by the Twins on Sunday.

Buchholz was knocked around well in his first inning of work, but two of the hits went off the gloves of outfielders Coco Crisp and Manny Ramirez and another was a seeing eye grounder through the infield. Fortunately, he still got through the frame with a low enough pitch count to stay in for the fourth and he was much better in his second inning of work.

We can only hope that Ellsbury, Lester, and Buchholz start the season in the minors. If that happens, the division race is finished before it even begins.

What I really don't get is how the Red Sox are HEAVY favorites to win the division. There was a two game gap between them and us last year. With Schilling out for the year, I think that by simple attrition, the gap is non-existent. I really think it's a flip of the coin.

You make me laugh. Contradicting yourself in a matter of four sentences.

a) Where was it suggested that those 3 would start in the minors?

B) We're not heavy favorites. Don't pull a Rodney Harrison here. The whole world hasn't counted you out.

C'mon Kilo. Read the whole post. For example, if Kennedy, Hughes, and Chamberlain are all in Triple A at the start of the season, you guys win the division by ten games. Same difference. Both teams are heavily counting on their young guys.

So Gom's hope is that the Sox will have an opening day outfield of Ramirez, Crisp, Drew and Kielty... and the starting rotation will be Beckett, Matsuzaka, Wakefield, with the last 2 spots being occupied by Tavarez/Snyder/Colon/Pauley/Hansack

Yes. Wouldn't you want a rotation of Pettitte, Wang, Mussina, Igawa, and Chase Wright?

Did you seriously proclaim the winner of the AL East division to be based on which prospects start the season with the MLB team?? Not to mention its the beginning of March...

Haven't you watched baseball long enough to know the season doesn't take full flight until August?? Both teams will probably have a much different look come the All Star break.

Buchholz got shitstomped today in his debut.

Come on Jacko, your better then this. I'd expect the oral garbage from others here.

Your giving Lester s*** for being wild in his 1st Spring training start?

Your Bashing Buchholz for getting hit hard?

Have you not noticed threw your yrs of watching baseball, most of the best pitchers in the game get hammered for the first few weeks. Why is this? Because most of them just throw fastballs for the most part. Even a mediocore hitter can hit well against an elite pitcher if he knows that 90% of the pitchers he will see will be FB. And not even there best FB.

All these guys are just trying to get there arms in better shape for the beginning of the season. Of course theres gonna be rust and work that need to be done with them. So you and Gom just chill for a second:D

As for you Gom, Lester isn't starting the yr in AAA. If Buchholz and Ellsbury do its not the end of the division race as you seem to think it is. If Buchholz starts the yr in AAA, that means that Colon has shown he can be an adequate pitcher in the 5th spot and there no reason to rush Buchholz. He will be there insurance plan. Ellsbury could also start the yr in AAA. If Coco shows enough, and Kielty has shown he can be the 4th OF the yes Ellsbury will probably start in AAA. That way the Sox can showcase Coco and move him for a decent return.

You see Gom your team is in a position where it needs to play its youngsters and have them produce at a big level or your team is Fahhhked. We have enough depth to where we don't need to rush or youngsters. All things considered don't you think the Yankees would rather be in a postition to let, Hughes, Kennedy and Chamberlin mature and be well rounded by the time they get to the bigs, instead of throwing them out there and crossing there fingers and hope they help keep this team a float.

Wang got shitstomped in his spring training start today.

BTW, who the f*** is pitching for the Sox right now? He just blew the 3-run lead, and then proceeded to give up a grand slam putting the Dodgers ahead 9-5, and now he just gave up a double...all in the ninth. Whaaaaaaat?

EDIT...that'd be Hunter Jones. I don't think he'll be pitching anymore after he finally gets this last out.

lol he just walked another batter.

Man I hate Texas... I can see a Red Sox spring training game on ESPN, so I was so excited I actually get to watch the sox. BUT NOOOOOOOO!!! Texas has decided to have near record snow fall and my satellite dish couldn't pick the game up worth s***!!! I don't get many opportunities to watch the Sox down here, so I'm really pissed when an opportunity is wasted.

I can see that Hansen still sucks. See the link for today's Box Score. He was a comp pick for who? They guy is not gaining any consistency since we've signed him.

http://boston.stats.com/mlb/boxscore.asp?gamecode=280308102

He has issues finding the strike zone. I saw him pitch once this spring where he was hitting 95 and had a good slider...but couldn't get it over the plate. Manny Delcarmen had the same issues when he was 24 and has gained consistency over the past couple seasons. I could see the same path for Craig Hansen. Luckily we don't need to rely on him this season, he can sit in AAA until he figures it out.

Posted
Hansen will be in AAA to start off. And unless he turns it around and makes the 25 man roster, then he probably be a part of some trade at the deadline for something the Sox need. It will be selling low, but the Sox won't get any kinda value if the have to place him on waivers. And there are plenty of teams out there ( including the Yanks ) that would take a flyer on him because of his age and upside.
Posted
There are plenty of teams that would take a flyer on him. But right now, he's damaged goods. This is exactly why you dont rush a kid to the bigs. He is a mental midget. Some guys can handle it, others you need to slowly bring along. Hansen sounds like the latter.

Alright I've seen enough from Chris Carter to know this guy can hit. What a rough position though. Hard to say who is the better hitter between Carter and Youkilis but nobody will confuse the defense.

I wish we had somewhere to put the guy.
