"We're working at it, hopefully moving the ball forward a little bit each day," Epstein said, according to MLB.com. "I don't usually like to talk about contract negotiations in any type of detail unless the player wants to or does so first. In this case, I think we have a better chance of getting a deal done in relative secrecy or confidentiality. I just answer it in general terms and say we're working at it and making progress."

Red Sox make "strong offer" to Lowell:

While they are not sending out any take-it-or-leave-it signals to his camp, the Red Sox [team stats] made a three-year guaranteed offer to third baseman Mike Lowell, that one club source described yesterday as “really strong.”

As the general managers meetings concluded, there was a belief coming from the ballclub that their offer is competitive enough that if Lowell truly wants to re-sign with the Sox -- which the club believes and which the club wants to happen -- then their three-year offer is significant enough to make him want to stay.

Most of the GMs looking for a third baseman were waiting to see whether Mike Lowell would accept Boston's three-year offer, which has been out there for a couple of days and may be firm. If he takes it, it sets the ball rolling for where Florida's Miguel Cabrera, Alex Rodriguez, and the White Sox' Joe Crede end up.

If Lowell is waiting for better offers, he'll get them on Monday.

IF he doesn't accept by Monday, I think he's gone.

Well as we all know this is the most important thing to do in the offseason we have to bring Lowell back it's as simple as that if the Sox are unable to sign Lowell which I don't see why they wouldn't be able to sign him then I think there will be a very good chance we see A-Rod in a Red Sox uniform next year.

I think Konerko would be a nice option if Lowell left. He would rake in Fenway ...

Konerko, career: .281/.353/.495

Konerko, career in Fenway: .265/.344/.434

FWIW, I don't think that the White Sox are shopping Konerko. :dunno:

WHDH says the offer is for 3 years' date=' 36 million.[/quote']

I would say that's a pretty nice offer. It isn't going to knock Lowell's socks off though (there's a pun there, but I don't intend there to be one).

Not anywhere close to what he'd be looking for.

Longest sentence since Thumper...

We're going to get outbid on Lowell...I think that that's a given. There is some team that's willing to give him more than us. Theo's value principle assosciated with team-controlled FA's essentially assures that that's going to happen...we've gotta hope that playing in Boston is worth more to him than the extra $3 or 4 million or year or whatever that someone else is going to throw at him. I think the lobbying by the fans, by Schilling, and by Youk is really going to help out here. I don't remember a free-agent situation where there's been as much outcry by teammates for a new deal, do you guys?

That being said...if ARod does come here (I think it's well established that we'd all rather Lowell...but that notwithstanding...) ARod, Ortiz, Manny...or Ortiz, ARod, Manny...whichever it may be...best 3, 4, 5 ever?

In 32 games. Konerko's a right handed pull hitter with power. Right handed pull hitters with power = good for Fenway.

Why wouldn't they shop him anyways? They might as well clean house after the season they had and Konerko is due a large sum of money.

Just sayin', the splits don't show that.

Excellent points. I don't like it when people restrict discussion to the very few players with current active rumors, and your ideas make sense.

From what I'm seeing, though, the White Sox seem to think that they're a contending team--I don't think that they're trying to ditch salary and rebuild. Why else would they offer so much to Uribe? :dunno:

If Lowell takes a 3/36 contract, it'll prove that he's willing to give a huge hometown discount because of his love for the Red Sox and Boston. The rumored choices are 3/36 with Boston or 5/70 with New York, and Mike Lowell enjoyed his time with the Yankees...I don't consider this to be close at all.

I agree with you about 90% here.

ARod-Manny-Ortiz as a 3-4-5 (however it shakes out) would be pretty amazing.

I also agree that if Lowell hits the market he'll get a 4 or 5 year deal for $12 million a year... something it appears the Red Sox aren't prepared to give.

I seem to remember a centerfielder fans wanted back quite a bit... and were pissed that the Front office let him go. I forget his name though.

My hunch is that Lowell stays. He should realize that his value (and his success) is so much higher here in Boston because of the park, the team, and the lineup and he very simply won't be the same player anywhere else. He can get the money in New York, perhaps LA or Texas or a bunch of places.... but IMO he doesn't put up numbers anywhere close to his 2007 anywhere else.

That having been said, he's due for a bit of a regression anyway since this dude's not a .324 hitter....

Does he care if it is his last big contract before he retires?

“I hope Mikey is back. He’s my favorite teammate of all time,” said Pedroia, in the midst of his move across town to new digs in Chandler, Ariz. “He’s been so great to me and my wife and helping us adjust to the major leagues. I’m pretty confident that something is going to get done.

“He got talked about a lot there at the end, but he didn’t get talked about as much as he should have. When David (Ortiz) was banged up, Manny (Ramirez) was hurt, and J.D. (Drew) was struggling a little bit, Mike Lowell was the guy who picked up the slack and carried us the whole year.”

-Dustin Pedroia

If hes not signed by now he probably wants to test the FA market. The chances of him coming back are falling slowly.

Sox-Lowell still apart

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

According to sources involved in the negotiations, there might be one more attempt made before midnight to hash out a deal between the Sox and Mike Lowell. After midnight the exclusive window the Sox have had with Lowell ends and he becomes a free-agent.

It doesn't mean Lowell is 100 percent gone if the sides can't reach an agreement in the next few hours, but it certainly gives Lowell and the Sox a chance to seek a free-agent deal with another team and/or player.

The Red Sox have reportedly offered Lowell a three-year deal, but Lowell, according to sources familiar with the talks are pining for four years. The Sox have extended themselves more than they thought they would in offering three years, but it's evident to the Lowell side that four years at $13 or $14 million per year is attainable in the free-agent market.

Don't like the sounds of that, I really thought they would get this deal done but with time running out it looks like he's going to see what he can get elsewhere.

Think he wants 4 years but I'm not real sure he will get that anywhere.

he def. will

the yankees, angels, dodgers, and phillies would all give him 4+ years IMO.

Yankees were rumored to be giving him 5.

I really, REALLY hope we don't offer him 5. I'm not too big on signing Lowell to begin with. Don't get me wrong, Lowell's an exceptional player, but for some reason I just would prefer not to sign him, especially for 5 years. Obviously, he's better than what we have at third right now, and that being said if the Yanks were to sign him, I wouldnt be satisfied with a contract longer than 3 years.

Posted
Yanks giving him 5, I know they would be stupid enough to give him 5, but they are already going after Miguel Cabrera, don't know if that makes much sence.

Florida is asking for Joba or Hughes, and the Yankees aren't gonna give either of them up. Although, they offfered Melky and Hughes for Peavy.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/11/11/cabrera.suitors/index.html

Joba not going anywhere under any trade

Hughes will only go for Santana or Peavy

Kennedy I can see being moved for Cabrera

That said there price is way to high for him. Offensivly he is a monster everything else he does though is avg to below avg.

This will take awhile for him to be traded b/c I'm sure Boras will want to keep ARod on the market untill it gets done and I'm sure the Marlins are waiting for ARod to sign

I dunno. Lowell would be an idiot to not at least see whatever offers come about.

If he wants to stay in Boston, and the 3x12 offer isn't that much different than anything else out there...he'll stay. If he sees something like 4x15 or even a 5 year deal, he'll probably take it.
