Well, given the way he's played this year, he certainly wouldn't have made a difference, but that wasn't the timeframe in question.

You guys can't get beyond one huge inconsistency. If you are so happy he left, then why come here and stir the pot? Your actions betray the message you are trying to sell. There's nothing to rub in if you are happy he's gone. Simple as that. Now, given his horribleness this year, I can buy that you are truly coming around to not caring, but there's just no way this made you happy in the offseason. It just doesn't line up with the way you reacted. I'd do cartwheels if Coco had an opt out and took it, and you can bet your ass I wouldn't go to a board for his new team and try tell them as much. When he goes, I don't care how his new fans think about him.

I didn't come here to talk s*** about Drew. I came here to talk baseball, and if you look at my posts, you'll see what I'm talking about. Drew just happened to suck in the first two months, but I'm not really optimistic that he'll pick it up given his past in LA, Atlanta, and St. Louis. We aren't crying over him in LA.

It's the closed mentality of "he's a Dodger fan; therefore he's a DB idiot" that doesn't add up.

it doesnt add up? The dodgers have no affiliation at all with the sox aside from a few players. You arent their rivals. You arent even in their division and of all the teams in baseball, you are the 2nd furthest away. You came here en masse to harass fred. Some stayed and became semi-good posters. But be honest here. There is no friendly ribbing with you guys because you play in the JV league 3K miles away.

The only time I've addressed Fred was to tell him to ignore the DBers who had a past with him. You're welcome to look at my posts to see if I've harassed him.

Like I said, I came here to talk baseball. It doesn't matter which team you follow. There's a few Sox fans and Brewers fans that post at DodgerBlues. And they talk baseball without any hostility there.

I don't seem to remember any ill will from you. It's just that you came with the invasion of DB guys. You're kind of guilty by association I guess, even though you don't deserve it.

2 months into a long contract is pretty early to run someone out of town, don't you think? I'll give him some time.

And for the record, I didn't want the Sox to get rid of Renteria.

Good point - it's like mortgaging your house to buy a mail-order bride and then, upon meeting "her", discovering she's a disfigured transvestite with one less eye and limb than her pictures suggested. But, with such an investment, you think "okay, I'll give it some time...maybe she can cook."

On the other hand, it didn't take two months for fans to get on Edgar's back, did it? It seems he was hearing the boo-birds in early May. Can't fault you personally, since you liked the guy - but still, it's kind of hypocritical of Sox Nation as a whole.

Though in the fans' defense, they are generally playing much better and have a huge lead in the East.

The problem with Renteria, was he was making errors left, right, and center. The team was also enduring a bit of a slide in May, and he became a scapegoat.

In Renteria's defense, the pitching staff wasn't exactly doing their job.

I actually think the fans were saying "Drewwwwwww" trying to get behind him (at least that's what it was when I went to the game on Wednesday night). They may have turned to boos after he struck out twice with key runners on though, lol.

In Boston though, that's the way it is sometimes though. Yeah, it's hypocritical and I hate it when we boo someone then go to cheer for them, but such is the reality of the situation. We boo players that don't live up to what they're supposed to do on the field. It's only May which is why the boos haven't gotten terribly loud yet, but if he continues to put on a sub-par performance in August you'll start to hear them.

At least we don't boo players that put up great numbers like in New York with A-Rod :D

J.D. does put up some pretty good numbers on his paycheck. Not as bloated at A-Rod's, Jeter's...or any Yank for that matter, but it's still ridiculous. I'm trying to think of a professional athelete that was paid more for so many years without backing it up on the field (save for one season with the Braves - his contract year  ...and even that didn't warrant the $55 million from the Dodgers).

Can anyone link me to a sortable database of 2007 player salaries? I'm having a ton of trouble finding one.

How about Albert Belle?

Denny Neagle.

Penny Hardaway.

Mike Hampton.

Darren Dreifort.

Mo Vaughn.

Ted Williams says what?

Nothing. He's dead. Horrible, I know. I just couldn't resist.

That was how many years ago? Are you going to tell me that we'd pass up on Willie Mays because of the color of his skin too?

I've been trying to find salaries myself actually, but finding an organized set of them is near impossible. If I find one I'll send it your way, Gibson.

And yes, Drew's salary is ridiculous. But, the market called for it. In a market where Matthews gets $50M/5 yrs and Meche gets $55M/5 yrs, Drew's contract was bound to be bloated. And what's worse? Matthews is actually earning his dough this year. I think Drew's a very talented player, there's no denying that, but his will to be on the field is the question. He's not a $70M man by any means.

Am I reading this correctly? In '07:

Dice-K is making $6-mil (excluding the ridiculous incentives and bonuses)

Ortiz is making $12.5-mil

Schilling $13-mil

...and Nancy Drew is pulling in $14 million?!?

I want Scott Boras to convince the Pope that I'm the second coming of Christ...seriously.

They've all put up at least one full season of All-Star numbers. Drew has yet to exceed the status of "serviceable".

During the length of the bad contract, or for their career?

I'd have to say career. If you've played well at least one season, that would at least serve as some form of proof that you can back up the zeroes on your contract with your performance on the field.

J.D. has been able to blow off the Phillies, get a bloated signing bonus from the Cardinals, get traded for three pitchers from the Braves for less than a half-season and score ridiculous long-term contracts from the Dogers and Sox based solely on hype.

"The Next Mickey Mantle" indeed...

At least one season? You may hate J.D. Drew, but what about this one?

.305/.436/.569/1.005 (2004 Atlanta)

.283/.393/.498/.891 (2006 in Los Angeles)

Career Numbers - .284/.390/.503/.893

His career OPS+ of 130 ties him for 150th all time.

Other players with an OPS+ of 130 include:

Carl Yastrzemski

Roberto Clemente

Sammy Sosa

John Olerud

Wade Boggs

Bobby Bonds
