Mets are in a free fall.

Phillies couldn't take advantage tonight, unfortunately.

Yankees are 22nd in bullpen ERA. White Sox are 28th. Tigers are 23rd. Angels are 18th.

Those respective teams have the 1st, 4th, 9th and 5th highest payrolls. Not a direct correlation.

EDIT: But yeah I get your point. Just being devil's advocate.

Jose Veras?

Rays better win it here.

I think this is proof right here that Torre has no interest in winning the division. If it happens, great, but he wants to rest his players. I'm pretty sure this is what yankees228 has been saying, and now I see what he's saying lol.

Reyes K's Betemit!

This is a beautiful thing. If the Yankees are going to win tonight, they'll have to at least do it in extra innings.

Believe me, if they clinch tonight (or whenever they clinch for that matter), they're going to start resting players. Joe Torre already said A-Rod, Jeter, and Cano will get rest. The division is yours.

9/25/2007- The Yankee run of division championships officially ends as Joe Torre decides to rest guys for the playoffs. If we dont win the WS, he will be mocked heavy for this.

Haha, yeah. Keep in mind, Rivera, Chamberlain, and Vizcaino are all technically available today. It's tied in the ninth and he's going to Jose Veras against the heart of the order. That's saying something.

Why is that. It's better to prepare for the playoffs, then give it all you have and be exhausted by the time you get there (when you don't need to).

Why?

It's highly unlikely you'll pass three teams for best record anyways.

... you made the playoffs after your s*** start. Why would he, of all people, be criticized (assuming he doesn't make any stupid decisions)?

Jacko, it's smarter to rest your players. He's doing the right thing.

Right, honestly, Jacko, you were calling for him to be fired after the slow start. You said this team was done. I don't think you should really be criticizing him anymore (at least for this year).

kay is already apologizing to the ny fans and explaining how it doesnt really matter if they win the east

ok mike i believe you but when the yanks open up in disneyland against their executioners i want to believe that it dont matter but i deal in reality

Well, Joe clearly did not give his team the best chance to win tonight, and in some way I don't blame him. The only thing I do differently tonight is that I let either Igawa, Veras, or Villone pitch the seventh.

It would have been nice to get the clincher out of the way, but so be it.

By the way, I think the whole thing about whether to go all out for the division or not comes down to this (although after tonight it's over anyway). The Yankees could go all out, win most of their games this week, and still not win the division. Where does that leave them?

Play it safe. Accept the wild card. Better prepare your players for the playoffs.

in all honesty ny has played tremendous baseball but had too big a hurdle to win the division

wild card teams have as good a chance as any but i do like the home field ad that winning the division brings

cleveland looks as if they want the home field as anaheim lost again in texas and the tribe is beating felix and the mariners who absolutley folded with that bitch of a schedule down the stretch

as a sox fan id prefer anaheim

as a sox fan who hates ny id prefer they go west

in any case it wont be easy for anyone this year

all 4 teams have a legit pop with the yanks getting the slight favorite spot due to their record after the break....sabathia and carmona loom for them and socia and his pussys are heading here i think

3 game lead with 5 games to go. as I remember Bob Cole saying when broadcasting the Canada vs. USA Men's Olympic hockey gold medal game in 2002, "surely, that's gotta be it"
