BOSTON, MA -- The Boston Red Sox today announced that the club has signed free agent righthanded pitcher Runelvys Hernandez to a contract with Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League. In addition, Hernandez has been invited to Boston's major league spring training camp as a non-roster player.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Hernandez, 28, joins the Red Sox organization after making 78 starts for the Kansas City Royals since 2002. In 2006, he was 6-10 with a 6.48 ERA in 21 starts with Kansas City and 5-6 with a 4.59 ERA in 12 games/11 starts with Triple-A Omaha. The righthander made three starts at Omaha to open the season before defeating Minnesota in his 2006 K.C. debut on April 26. He was 1-4 when optioned to Omaha on May 28 before returning to the Royals for the rest of the season on July 21. Hernandez' best stretch of the year was a 3-1, 2.88 performance over five starts from August 10-September 1. That included a complete game, 2-0 victory on August 26 at Toronto. Overall, he ranked second on the Royals staff in starts and was third in wins and innings (109.2).

He was released by Kansas City on December 7, 2006.

Hernandez is 25-33 with a 5.38 ERA in his 78 career starts with Kansas City. After missing all of 2004 due to ligament transplant surgery on his right elbow in September 2003, he led the Royals with eight wins and ranked third with 159.2 innings, both career bests, in 2005. The righthander was the team's June pitcher of the month, going 3-1, 2.37 in five starts.

He was Kansas City's opening day starter in 2003 and was the major leagues' first four-game winner, going 4-0, 1.36 in April. Hernandez was on the disabled list from May 27-July 11 with right elbow inflammation and then was sidelined for the year on August 17 before having surgery. The righthander made his major league debut with Kansas City in July 2002, winning his first game on July 20 versus Cleveland, and was 4-4 in 12 overall starts. He was originally signed by Kansas City as a non-drafted free agent in January 1998.

Rotoworld:

Red Sox signed RHP Runelvys Hernandez to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

We're surprised Hernandez had to settle for a minor league deal and that hepicked a team with a full rotation. The 28-year-old still has some upside and is nice insurance for Boston, though he has little chance of winning a job out of spring training. He'll probably begin the year in Pawtucket's rotation.

You can't have a horrible Minor League signing.

If we signed your mom to a minor league contract and invited her to ST, then would that be good?

If we need an emergency starter from AAA' date=' would you rather see Abe Alvarez?[/quote']

Let's see:

Alvarez younger than Hernandez: Check

Alvarez a lefty?: Check

Alvarez have near same career numbers as Hernandez: Check

Yea I would.

a700 has a point. Hernandez is much better than Abe, or at least can be. With Runlevys you have about a 50 percent chance of getting a winning performance. With Abe, you might have a 20 percent.

he flat out stunk last year i dont see the need for this

EDIT: if you look at his stats in the majors since 2002 they have become worse and worse with each years

Abe has a 27-24 record in the minors and is 0-1 in MLB (the year Baltimore owned us). And a 4.47 ERA in the minors, even despite a horrible 2006.

Hernandez MLB: 25 W 33 L 5.38 ERA

Hernandez Minors: 31 W 24 L 3.34 ERA

We've only see one MLB start from Alvarez. I wouldn't mind seeing a few more.

Alvarez has basically no career numbers.

He's a fly ball pitcher. In Fenway thats a terrible mix.

He sucks.

I have watched Alvarez pitch personally in the minors and almost every out goes to the warning track. Against major league hittters in fenway, he would get beat up.

Runelvys Hernandez sucks too , no one is better than the other here

When a pitching hungry organization lets go a pitcher is a red flag. having said that Hernandez isn't just a better pitcher than Alvarez, but its also a better pitcher than Snyder who is the Sox's 40 man roster.

Runelvys has good stuff, he just also always has arm problems too. Its a minor league contract though, so it carries absolutely zero risk and he did have something like a 2.88 ERA in september or something. If he sucks and never throws a pitch in the majors again, none of us will ever think of this signing again because it doesn't really tie up very much cash. If, by some chance, he explodes and ends up being able to pitch in the majors pretty well, we'll all talk about what a great garbage heap pick up he was. In order to get lucky with the Aaron Small's and Shawn Chacon's off the garbage heap, you have to actually make some signings and trade for guys who you might not neccesarily acquire with good hopes of them panning out and then it takes luck.

Who knows, maybe Schilling goes down for the count and Runelvys ends up being a hero. Wouldn't shock me. Stranger things have happened.

I think this is a very good signing. I thought Runelvys would get a major league deal somewhere. He has great stuff and is still young enough to rebound. I see him pushing tavares out of that long relief role so he can be used later in the game.

Alvarez sucks more ass than Hernandez: Check

Alvarez has thrown 4 big league games in his life. If he couldnt contribute to last years horrific pitching staff.......thats a clear sign the RedSox see him as about as useless as tits on a bull man. That was a pretty clear statement of what they thought of his ability. I dont understand the love fest for a guy who has put up a 5.64 ERA last year.

Alvarez will never pitch in the big leagues, Hernandez has already earned a shot and could be a 5 guy for some teams (albeit a bad one).

BTW.....they do not have the same numbers, and its actually not even f***ing close. Please do a little research when you are going to throw a comment out there like that.

Hernandez minor league numbers:

31-23 ERA:3.34

7.9 K/9Inn

434 IP

Abe Alvarez minor league numbers:

27-24 ERA: 4.47

6.63 K/9inn

417 IP

You cant compare their major league numbers because Alavarez has NEVER been good enough to even deserve a shot, not even last year when Kyle Snyder, and Johnson, and Tavarez and every other shitbum EXCEPT Alvarez was given a shot. I would take Hernandez any day of the week over Abe.

alvarez would have gotten a shot last season if he didnt break his ankle. I dont think he would have one well, though. He does suck.

Your right, I forgot he was hurt.

He still sucks, and he wouldnt have done any better after getting hammered all year in AAA.

I agree, this is a very underrated signing IMO. Hernandez has more upside than Abe and has shown flashes of brilliance in the Majors (see April last year). For a minor league deal this can do nothing but help us with depth, and has no risk or consequences involved.

Posted
Great signing, like others have already said it can only help us... last year I did see him pitch some great games, i remember a CG SHO last year that he throw, so he will definitely help in depth...

I don't see this signing as that big a deal. It's a minor league contract with an invite to spring training, which to me means he's injury insurance.

It says on MLB.com that he'll compete for a job in the bullpen, but so probably will Bob Stanley and Mark Lemke-- because there really isn't a bullpen right now.

If he comes to spring training and looks good he'll get some innings. If he doesn't or gets injured, what does he really cost the team?
