Since John Smoltz was recently injured his stock may have dropped. I'd be more nervous now making a move and trading away "anything" for a guy who could help this season and possibly not contribute at all if injured. Its still a while until the trade deadline but I'm no longer that excited about making a move.

If we could get Smoltz at the expense of Edgar Martinez, David Pauley and Brandon Moss, what do you guys say? Do you think that would get it done possibly?

I would drive all 3 of them to logan airport myself (avoiding the ted williams tunnel) to get smoltz. That deal is a no brainer.

Hahaha, of course. What a disgrace with the Big Dig. 68 billion dollars and they can't assure our safety.

I'm not very well-educated when it comes to the prospects. Do you think the Braves would go for it or would they most likely require a Hansen/Lester/Pedroia-esque 'spect? Obviously, if they inquire about Lester or Hansen I'd say no considering the impact both those players are having for us, but what do you think the lowest their asking price would be?

No chance Atlanta would do that, they would definetly get a better offer from another team, such as Detroit, or if they didn't, they would rather keep him than acquire those three prospects.

The Braves would never go for that but hey we can dream can we. They would want either Hansen or Lester to begin with and I am pretty sure the sox would say no because of Smoltz age and the fact of the contributions they are getting from them. They need Hansen now especially with Timlin being 40 and having 2 very poor performances over the past week and a half.

Smoltz shutting down the Padres after 6 innings. Let's hop Theo can bring him to Fenway. He can put this team over the top. Plus, next to Schilling, he is probably the best big game pitcher in the game.

Again another guy the sox won't overpay for. No need to give up too much young talent for a 39 year old guy that won't help this team down the road. We know you live for the right now but that is not how Theo likely will look at things. No chance he parts alot of young talent for a guy that won't even help him in 2-3 years. Schuerholtz doesn't have to trade him because he isn't in position to lose him at the end of the year for nothing. He can just pick up his reasonable option and have him back for the braves next year. If you want smoltz you will be paying schuerholtz what he wants.

It might be worth it for a guy with his stuff and big game resume. Not too many can bear up under the bright lights, and he is one of the best at it.

I'll tell you what. There are likely 3 real contenders to trade for Smoltz. The Sox, Tigers, and Yankees. If he gets traded, whovever gets him is the serious favorite to represent the AL in the WS this year, IMO. He's got a track record like Schilling when it comes to the playoffs. I don't think we can pass up an opportunity to snag him when we are probably the frontrunners in terms of tradable MiLB talent.

If it's truethat the Yanks won't part with Hughes, that should put the Sox in a good podition to knock the Yankees out of the box unless the Yankees can work cash in by taking a bad contract, etc.

next to a very young lester curt schilling has been our only consistant starter this year

another turn for our #5 and another beating in a winnable game

its a little redundant waiving the white flag in 20% of our ballgames before the 1st pitch

and whats the deal with beckett?

despite 11 wins and his health i'd have to consider him a disappointment

he should be pushing 15 wins and an era of 5.12 as of this morning is shall i say

below expectations to say the least

he hasnt been able to handle toronto or ny for that matter either

7hrs in his last 3 starts is reason for concern

ask yourself today

are we capable of winning without another hoss in the stable

i have a lot of doubts that could be put to sleep in acquiring a smoltz or schmidt for the run

as bad as ny had been reeling we're a 1/2 game up and they will move on a stud

they dont play for 2nd place or next year

Its deffinitly bad times in Red Sox nation right now...however...

A starting combo of Curt Schilling and John Smoltz is very strong. We also forget that Tim Wakefield is a very consistant #3 starter who keeps the Red Sox in games. As for Beckett and Lester at the bottom of the rotation....its a guessing game....they can shut out a team or they can get crushed. Either way the Red Sox rotation is much more impressive with two ace pitchers, a reliable #3, and two flashy young pitchers in the back.

....I don't like our odds of getting him and on that note....I don't have great faith we will get anything. It sounds like this is the team the Red Sox are going to battle with. If these guys would just play better than we wouldn't have to worry so much.

he called for the Braves to get relief help yesterday for them to make a run at the wild card

this is not a bad team. They have been playing better lately, and of course they have a shot at the Wild Card in the National League

braves won 5 in a row

they got a ton of games left with the mets as well

they, like the rest of the nl,should be in the hunt till the end so this smoltz talk may just be a waste of time cause if atlanta has a shot they wont part with their best pitcher

Good point, watch the next two weeks of Braves box scores to see if Smoltz will be traded or not. If they think they have a shot at the playoffs, I don't see Smoltz being traded unless a similar pitcher of his caliber was going to Atlanta in return, and that isn't what we would be trading if we acquired him.

The Braves are a very bad team. Their GM should know that they will not be going anywhere, and it's better to move a player one year early than one year too late.

If they were an AL team i would agree that they should probably do some salary dumping.

However, in the VERY mediocre NL, if they make a run they can seriously contend for the WC. Their offense is pretty good and if they get some improvements with their relief pitching, they can make a run.

Posted
Even if they could pull a rabbit out of the hat and win the WC they are not at the same level as the Mets or even the Cards when healthy. The Braves GM knows this. Making the playoffs to go out in the first round is an old story for the Braves. I just don't see the Braves being anxious to keep a high-priced old player with a history of arm problems when he can use him to trade for prospects to build for the future.

is it a history of arm problems or 1 surgery??

i only recall him missing a lot of time once in his career

and really

do the mets scare anyone??

86 yr old tommy glavine cant break a pane of glass

petey is reeling from??

who knows how f***ed up he really is

is it his hip

is it his toe is it his shoulder??

now food poisining??

st louis flat out sucks

houston has done nothing with the return of raja

cincinatti?? i have no idea what that franchise did last week but it made no sense

the west?

i wont take the bait as there are rockie fans here that have a reason to watch the rest of the season for a change

the nl is as wide open as ever with the mets being a favorite but a vulnerable 1 at that

IMO they are far superior to the Braves. Plus, I don't think the Braves are as good as the Marlins.

Braves tie 1930 Yanks' scoring mark

Associated Press

ST. LOUIS -- The Atlanta Braves became the first team since the 1930 New York Yankees to score 10 or more runs in five straight games, building a 13-5 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals after five innings Tuesday night.

Andruw Jones had four hits and a season-high five RBI for the Braves. The last time the franchise reached double digits in five straight games was in 1897 when it was called the Boston Beaneaters.

Andruw Jones, Adam LaRoche, Chipper Jones and Brian McCann homered for the Braves, who beat the Cardinals 15-3 in the opener of a three-game series on Monday. Atlanta had 51 runs in its first four games after the All-Star break.

Needless to say everyone down here is happy. Smoltz aint going nowhere. The Braves are only 4 games out of the WC.. If they could put together a run like this in the playoffs.... well, ya never know what could happen.

yeah, I'm actually beginning to believe the Braves will trade for a decent reliever and then make the playoffs with a wild card...then they will lose, but who cares, great rebound
