me. He is so far. How can you argue?

Abe Alvarez: 3-0 1.96 ERA 23.0 IP 11 H 5 ER 3 HR 7 BB 12 K

Bronson Arroyo: 3-0 3.04 ERA 26.2 IP 24 H 9 ER 5 HR 5 BB 22 K

Ok, Arroyo has a better BB/K ratio, but other than that everything else favors Alvarez.

Yeah, Abe Alvarez is also in triple f***ing A. I really do think you are stupid.

Whats with the hostility? And yes I know you can't compare a pitchers stats from AAA to a guy whos pitching in the majors, but in my opinion I think Alvarez is going to be a nice replacement for Arroyo. Jesus, you guys make it sound like Arroyo was a godsend. I watched him in spring training and he didn't look that great. Sure, he's off to a great start but lets not forget he's pitching in the National League.

Ask me right now who I'd rather give up for Wily Mo Pena?

Wily Mo Pena was a move for the future. His plate discipline has already improved ever since he's gotten here, and he just needs to continue to do so, and once that happens you'll start to see him hit for power. Honestly, I have a good feeling about Roger Clemens coming here, and once that happens the issue with Arroyo as far as I'm concerned is a dead one.

This thread is a joke. Why is anyone wasting their time with this.

Why is this thread a joke? I was asking everyone for their opinions and all I get is hostility in return.

Because its a ludacris argument. Proven MLB pitcher vs. unproven prospect. Its not even worth arguing...

Yeah, right now, but Alvarez, if he comes up and proves to be an excellent 5th starter then the argument becomes not so ludacris. I guess what I'm asking is, if anyone thinks Alvarez could turn out to be Arroyo's replacement, production wise?

Well, that isnt so stupid. Had you said that in the first place no one would have jumped on you... but I dont think Abe can be quite as good as Bronson. Last year when he pitched vs. Baltimore, I was at the game, and he allowed a bunch of runs. He doesnt really have much velocity, and thats basically his downfall. He's got a pretty decent curve though that would be better complimented with a harder fastball.

I hear that he has excellent command and changes speeds effectively but as you stated his fastball isn't so great. He's got to be better than DiNardo though, that guy just hangs everything out over the plate, and I'm sorry I didn't bring out the question earlier.

i just saw arroyo pitch last night (brewers v the reds) and his fastball wasn't overpowering, the first batter he faced took him yard after tattooing a fastball, but his fastball he would work away or come inside and got most of his K's on his curve. during the player introductions i had to give him a standing o, and i feel sort of bad for the guy the way the sox sort of promised him a future in boston then traded him. but that is the way of the game.

Wait, did the show hosts disagree with the caller? I mean there's your obvious answer right there

He didn't really give his stance to the caller, because the caller kept blabbing away.

Bronson Arroyo is a major league pitcher of some pretty good quality. Abe Alvarez might never be able to say that about himself.

I don't mean to get personal or anything, but you might be the most closed minded fan on the boards. So DiNardo had one bad outing? Don't be that guy who write everyone off after one game. DiNardo is a talented player who is also better than Abe Alvarez and to be honest I think DiNardo has a future in the majors and I'm pretty sure Alvarez doesn't. DiNardo has a plus curve and good location. Obviously if you leave an 85 mph fastball out there for hitters to hit, they will hit them, this happens on bad starts. The same can be said for a 95 mph fastball. Ask Beckett.

Whoa, close minded? I'm all for giving everyone a chance to succeed, and I don't write everyone off after one game. Do you not see my patience with Wily Mo Pena?

No, I haven't seen you write anything about Wily Mo Pena.

Abe Alvarez will probably have the same problems Bronson Arroyo....lack of velocity on his pitches. Arroyo is able to hit 90mph with his fastball at times but he really needs to reach back for it which presents a problem with his control. When the control is on with his fastball he tends to have a successful game. He does have a fantastic slider but nobody bites unless his fastball is working.

Abe Alvarez does not have much velocity which means his game will be around precision. He needs to hit his spots and with a pitcher like that it takes a while for him to develop into anything decent. He will have to learn hitters and know there weaknesses to win ball games....

Personally I would take Bronson Arroyo because I know he has a strong mental game...not just that but he is also in love with Boston....something we have in common

just said that Bronson Arroyo is a better pitcher than Abe Alvarez. Is anyone buying this crap?

if Alvarez was better than Arroyo, then Alvarez would be in the Sox rotation right now.

Look, Abe was up for a few starts two years ago, right? All you hear about is Lester, Papelbon, even our current 5th SP. If AA was so great, wouldn't we hear some more about him? Don't tell me the Red Sox are so brilliant they are hiding this guy under the radar? Also, he doesn't show up on any top 50 lists. From what i saw of him he looked to be a 95 ERA+ candidate - after he got his brains beat in for 250 innings first. That comes out to be a 4.90 ERA with about a 12-11 record. Workmanlike, but hardly exciting.

Besides, we all know what happens to #5 SP's in the playoffs - long relief. AA is untried in that role, but Mr. Arroyo is not FYI.

How's that for non hostile?
