Thanks Rivernator. You said it well. If you have range and can get a good jump on the ball CF is really the easiest of the outfield positions. I reveled in CF, did ok in right, and was lost in LF. I never thought CF was anything but an easy position to play. You could see and judge everything.

I play CF now in a softball league and I notice that I get much better jumps on the ball than I did when I was in LF. The only problem is that depth perception is hard to determine and balls hit directly over your head are a problem....

You do not play CF with your feel directly parallel to home plate. You never play that way. You play centerfield at a slight angle, and for me that was my right foot in front of my left at a 45 degree angle since I am a lefty thrower. For righties it is the same. That way you can cross over at the moment the ball is hit and still have time to get in positon to catch the ball as well as move back on it if it suddenly gets out there faster that you would normally expect. I never midjudged a ball as a CF, not once. I did in LF a few times. Then, again, I hated left field. In 1957 when I led my 15-16 year old YMCA Baseball team in hitting, hits, stolen bases, and fielding, I sometimes played left when one of our big shot players would show up occasionally. That is, until they saw the difference in my performance when playing the two spots. As a LF I hit 236; as a CF I hit 423. End of story.

Don, this may be a stupid question but are you the same guy I see and hear on MLB.Com for the Red Sox. If so, welcome aboard. I love hearing you and Rem. I only hope you get as nervous and uptight as I do watching the Red Sox. Man, I love that team but they drive me wild and mad and crazy and out of my mind. Use whatever influence you have to get them to have a laugher once in awhile. Anyway, if you are THE D.O. keep up the good work and let's get the Orioles this weekend.

Didn't think so my friend, but why the hell would a guy take a handle like that? Just for the hell of it I gave him the benefit of the doubt and some ******* on board here got personal with me. Well, I have to answer him myself. Anyway, no longer do I give anyone any benefit of the doubt.

MannyHof, listen numuts, you don't ever ever want to get personal with me on this board or any other board we post on. I gave the guy the benefit of the doubt because I know that Orsillo has posted on the Red Sox Board and Schilling on Sons of Sam Horn. You may want to play the role of smartass but I would walk very softly from here on in when you make any reference to any post I make. You want to disagree with what I say, fine, that is your perogotive, but you get personal with me again and will not like what you get back in kind.

Monsterman, I'm a lover, not a fighter, but that smart alecky post and personal reference was uncalled for. My fault for believing this Orsillo guy in the first place, HOF did not have to get personal. Anyway on to better stuff.

Hi all: New visitor to the site. I just wanted to put my 2 cents in for what it's worth. I think the Sox made a mistake with Arroyo. Although average, he loved Boston. We need that too. Being in love with Bean Town is a plus. Unlike the Damon Devil. He made the mistake of not asking for a lot of $$, thinking they would keep him. They couldnt have traded if he was making the larger dollar.

I still think it's wayyyy to early to evaluate this trade. Arroyo has looked good, but what if all of a sudden he can't spot his FB? I think he will come down to Earth, and very soon. WMP is a project. Come back in 2, 3 years and evaluate this trade.

I love the approach WMP is taking at the plate lately. Like I said in the game thread last night, him going the other way is a beautiful thing. He keeps doing that, pitchers will have to come inside on him. I think that would equal even more success.

RSF, welcome aboard. You will like this site. Almost all of the guys on board, save two, are good people and they know their Red Sox. Looking forward to conversing with you this season.

I don't think the Red Sox are going to turn around and trade Pena. This team has no pressure to go all out to win it all this year. Pena is the Red Sox insurance for next season because I don't think Nixon will be back.
Posted
think about it this way. The guy is getting a chance to show what he can do, but in the end he is not the typical sox philosophy player. The sox have made some questionable pitching choices and the only reliable guy who will be in Boston in the rotation for a few yrs is Beckett. If the sox could nab a young, front line starter for Wily Mo, then they will prbably do it. Think about it, the reds dealt him when his value is low, but at high value, which he will get to by the AS break, he could head a package for a Zito...

Wouldn't trade Pena for Zito. Pena has too much upside for a guy that can be had on the free agent market. He might not be the typical red sox type of player but obviously theo saw something in him that he liked and that is righthanded power.

He is obviously a special player becaus power that young is rare. That being said, there have been many special players who falter.

he isnt a starter currently.

He will be next year though and you were talking about the future rotation. Obviously WMP is gone for a front of the rotation starter as are most positional players but the Sox aren't going to get a good enough pitcher in return to move him. Trot is in the last year of his contract and probably not coming back unless he takes a hometown discount. WMP will probably be starting in RF next year and in LF once Manny retires or goes to another team.

That's not what you said. You said, "only reliable guy who will be in Boston in the rotation for a few yrs is Beckett." Papelbon future is a starter, and judging by his numbers last year, and his apperance as the Red Sox closer, he looks more than capable of being at least a number two starter.

Posted
Of course players with power potential have faltered. But he is young enough where the Red Sox feel he can be a part of this teams future as this is not a young team. Theo didn't come back in order to mortgage the future to go for the title this year. He came back to see his philosophy of building for 07, 08, 09 and thats where Pena fits in with this team.

Im confused as well...

First of all, why would we trade Pena? With obvious help of Papa Jack, Manny & Ortiz, he has been getting better each game that we see him in. Theo has indicated that he sees Wily Mo is the eventual successor in right field. Hence this is Trot's contract year. He might be signed back but in a reduced role of playing time to give way for Wily.

Oakland has what like 5 outfielders as it is? Swisher, Kotsay, anbd Bradley are their starting outfielders for the forseeable future. Outfielders arent what they are really looking for.

I'm not a Zito guy, what a surprise a Yankee fan wants us to get him. His ridiculous high ERA and bad luck against NY wouldnt have anything to do with it

IMO its looking like right now that Zito will be on the other side of the rivalry next year. Johnny Damon has already come out saying he's petioning for Zito to be in pinstripes.

Like my friend Mr Crunchy pointed out, Wily Mo might be auditioning as a trade chip for a midseason pitcher...

Did you put any thought into this post? Do you HONESTLY think they are going to deal Wily Mo? After all the progress he has made since joining the team? Please tell me this is a joke. We are watching a transformation everyday much like we saw with David Ortiz three years ago. The guy is a little over 4 years removed from high school baseball and stinging the ball all over the park and playing a decent CF (for him anyway). He is 23 and has enormous talent and promise, the guy can flat out rake. They made this move with the intention that Nixon wasnt coming back. Wily Mo is not going anywhere.
