Philip Hughes made his third start of the season for the Tampa Yankees; 8 Ks in 6 IP and it lowered his ERA to 0.56 .

Hughes has been absolutely amazing this year. I wouldnt be SHOCKED (although it is unlikely) to see him in Columbus by year's end. God knows they might need him if we take all of their pitchers for the big club like last year.

I've read that the Yanks are frontrunners for Zito at the deadline, and they would have to give up Hughes. They might be able to trade for Hunter without trading Hughes.

As for who would get sent down, maybe Villone?

Villone's been pretty good this year so far, I dont think we send him down. WHen either Small/Pavano/Dotel comes back Matt Smith will be the first to go, then after that we'll go from there. Proctor would likely be next because he has options, but with the way he is pitching I would gladly cut ties with anybody else. Maybe we can find somebody to unload Wright's contract on for nothing more than a Low A backup catcher or something.

As for Zito, I would love to have him, as would Cashman, i'm sure. But Cashman wouldnt trade for Zito if it meant giving up Hughes. He'd have to try and find another way, and if Beane isnt going for it, we would just be content not getting him.

Only way I can see Hughes being involved in a Zito trade is if at 3:30 p.m. on July 31st Boston and Oakland has a deal arranged, George steps in and says "f*** those Beaneaters, Billy. Take whoever you want."

And nah, Hunter's not getting traded during the season. If we were to get him it would be as a Free Agent in the offseason. The Twins would rather keep him all year, try to make the playoffs, and then part ways with him in exchange for a first round pick than trade him for some prospects and make the fans think they're giving up.

Twins have no shot this year, they may trade him to get something for him if they don't think they can bring him back.

As for Zito, it's no Hughes, no deal. Billy Beane won't settle for anything less.

Thanks for telling me that Mr. Beane.

..nah, im just playing. You're probably right. But with Beane's knoweldge I can see him possibly trying to make a deal for some other Yankee prospects with Hughes not included. Maybe Clippard, that kid who hit good in Staten Island last year (name escapes me at the moment), Sean Henn, Kevin Reese, etc. I dont think a deal like that is completely out of the realm of possibility. It's giving up a lot, but i'd rather do that than give up Hughes.

But yeah, if Cashman was faced with No Hughes, No Deal, than he would opt for option B. No Deal.

He was pretty good for us in '04 though. I'm not looking at stats or anything, but he did a good job, and thats why he's earned Joe's trust.
He had a 5.47 ERA in 2004. I thought Torre was crazy to keep going to him that year, and then to re-sign him for '05. I hope he keeps giving him the ball, because he stinks.:thumbdown

The Yankees have the best Run differential in MLB at 99-70. They have allowed the 2nd fewest runs in the AL (Detroit is 1st) at 70. They are 7-0 in day games and 1-8 at night. How the hell are we 8-8 with the best run differential in the game and the 2nd lowest RA? It does not make sense, only way to go is up I guess....

Why should the Yankees give up Hughes for Zito if hes going to be a FA at the end of the year?

They shouldnt

I dont think the numbers are a fair representation of his performance last year. He got beat up in a couple starts and relief appearances, but a lot of the time he went out there and did a good job for us. I was very pleased with how he turned out that year.

You can keep him. Sign as many 5+ ERA pitchers as you want. They all have good games occasionally

Hey yankee fans, just a query

As the rotation stands now, here's the Sox starting pitchers for the 2 game series against NY

May 1st- The steady knuckler Wake

May 2nd- Beckett's first matchup since that October 03 night

Any idea who will be pitching for the pinstripes? RJ vs Beckett matchup would be a sweet deal.

Thank god it's not the bottom half of the rotation starting those two games.

Johnson had a great start today, a great rebound from that start in Toronto.

8.0 IP, 3 H, ER, 1 BB, 5 K

The one run came on a homerun that hit the foul pole and all three hits were by Tejeda.

It will likely be Wang and Chacon for the yankees in the sox series. Also, after tuesday, the yankees will be splitting Randy and Mussina up with our fifth starter who will likely be small in 6 days....

first game should be good, second one should be a blowout

you guys wont be blowing anybody out. The jury is still out on both of them, as they have both shown flashes of brilliance and then flashes of horror.....

I'd have to say if there be any blowouts, it would be the other way around considering how badly the yankees are against wakefield. I believe they will both be good games though. Chacon was good his last time out and Wang got f***ed by a blown call.

Chacon... Well, its gonna be bad until proven otherwise. Boston roughed him up as a Colorado pitcher, then as a Yankee pitcher last season. Beckett by far has a better shot of pitching a good game

I'm not saying we'll win, but you wont blow us out...
