Since when is losing games 1-0, 2-1 or losing in 1-0 in extra innings the pitchers fault? Mussina is 7-7 with a 3.30 ERA in the postseason. Great ERA, 500 record. When you dont get any run support its hard to win.

My theory is that Mussina's attitude and presence brought down the rest of the Orioles (and the Yankees after he joined them). It isn't that he didn't try his hardest, he tried too hard. And he brought down his teammates, they were less loose, less able to respond well to extreme pressure situations. Such as the 9th inning of game 7 in 2001, or being unable to put Boston away two years ago even when they had a 3-0 lead.

I dont think a player who plays once every five days can bring down a franchise. However I do think that the additions of all the superstars has made the Yankees club house an uncomfortable place.

Pavano makes minor league start

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - New York Yankees starter Carl Pavano allowed one unearned run and two hits over five innings in an extended spring training game on Tuesday.

It was the first game for the right-hander since being shutdown March 30th because of a bruised left buttocks.

Pavano struck out three during the 58-pitch outing against Philadelphia minor leaguers. His fastball reached the low 90's.

"He was outstanding," catcher Ben Davis said.

A back injury limited Pavano to only two innings in spring training. He could rejoin the Yankees rotation in June.

Reliever Octavio Dotel threw 35 pitches off a bullpen mound. He was shutdown for five days last month after developing tendinitis in his surgically repaired right elbow. Dotel is scheduled for another mound session late this week and could resume pitching in extended spring training games next week.

Right-hander Ramiro Mendoza, who had shoulder surgery last year, also pitched one inning in the extended spring game.

Moose pitched another gem tonight.

7.0+ IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 5 K

His control has been incredible: of the 86 pitches he threw tonight, 62 were strikes. He's in line for his 5th win and a 2.35 ERA.

I'm starting to think we should trade Sheffield. It doesn't look like his option will be picked up (a move I support) and that's just going to lead to (more) trouble, the kind of stuff a team doesn't need when making a championship run (granted, we would need his HR's and RBIs but we seem to be doing fine without them right now.) I'm sure we could get something pretty nice for him and a package of par minor league players.

Contract year

So what are you saying? That he was milking itlast year because it wasnt his contract year, and the only reason he's pitching well is because he's motivated due to his upcoming free agency? Ridiculous. Players dont slack off when they have job security due to a contract and then turn it back up when their contract is about to expire. Ridiculous. He wants to win a championship as bad as the next guy.

I'm not in favor of trading Sheffield, but I wouldnt cry if we did. Could definately get a nice little package of Minor Leaguers or something, and it would also allow Melky to come up and start, possibly. However, Sheffield's intensity, drive, motivation, and Home Run power are things that i'm not too sure i'm willing to part with yet.

Small isnt ready. He had no location today, and his stuff isnt good enough without the location...

Maybe with Joey Torre's love affair with Tanyon Sturtze it's Smalley who gets the pink-slip in about two weeks in favor of Carl Pavano.

What the hell are you talking about? Mussina wasnt even on the mound in either of those situations (although he did pitch in the Boston series, dont remember if he lost or not, but it wasnt his fault we didnt win it). Mussina is a calm, mellow guy. Seems like a good guy, good father, family man, etc. I've loved him since he's been with the Yankees, exactly the kind of guy I want on my team. I doubt Mussina has caused any problems.

Mussina has been described as aloof and unwilling to teach the young guys. Thats bout the only knock on his resume. The guy never does anything wrong and gives it his all every game....

Winning makes their job fun, but I can assure you that the job and career come first. Realistically, at the beginning of every season, less than half the teams have any shot at playoffs, never mind a championship. So, what are the more than 400 players that have no shot at the post season playing for? The answer is the same for all players: It is the money. I guess it is just a coincidence that so many players seem to put up better numbers in a contract year. The Yankees need to look no further than Pavano and Wright as examples. I am sure coaching staffs, team doctors, and trainers have numerous stories about players who will not push themselves in the early years of a contract so as not to cause a career threatening injury in the early years of a contract. You can call it ridiculous like you are some authority or mind reader, but it is as valid as any other theory or explanation for the improved performance. Granted, it is only a theory that cannot be proved, but it cannot be disproved either. Trot's also in his last year and he is putting up very good numbers. Am I saying that he faked injuries the last couple of years. No, I am not, but my money is on Trot having a big year, because he really needs to put up some good numbers before he hits the market. A theory is not ridiculous just because you disagree.

Well..Trot Nixon is only 31, so he still has several years left in the bigs, Mussinas going to be 37, and we all know that hes no Randy Johnson or Roger Clemens or Greg Maddux who can play till 45. So I think that Mussina is just in the zone right now. Is it for money? Who knows, but I'm 80% sure if he'd be getting a new contract...it will be with the Yankees. Not many teams have room for old starting pitcher with a history of injurys and so on and so forth. I'm excited about his play this year, and if hes only playing good to prepare for the next seasons contract offers(ala Beltran), then, ya know what, I'll live with it, becuase at the rate hes going, he can help us get all the way, and thats all I need him to do for me this year. We can deal with next year when that comes around, and weather hes on the team or not, we'll see. But right now, Hes playing for now, becuase I'm not too sure if he will be expecting that many offers becuase of a good 16th season.

Mussina finally adjusted to his age. His problems the last few yrs have stemmed from his velocity or lack thereof. In games where he didnt have velocity, he got wrecked. His change was around 78-80 and his knuckle-curve was in the low 70s. When his heat was mid-80s there wasnt enough of a change. Now his change is low 70s and his knuckle curve is mid 60s, so on days when his heater is mid80s, he is still effective. It was Maddux-esque and he has been solid....

Trot started out on fire last yr too. Then he tailed off towards the end. His style of play does not lend itself to having a long career....

Guess who's going tongiht BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm out, gotta run.

What a day trying to get tickets. It was a MAD DASH until the very end. I spent about $150 more than I wanted to, but got great seats, and made it to the game on time (something I didnt think would happen with how the process was unfolding).

Sheff DL'd and Melky Cabrera called up

Yeah, baby!

Johnny being Johnny...

Just about the time Beckett was settling into his new digs, Damon was grabbing a bat out of his locker across the way in the clubhouse where so many Yankee legends have dressed through the decades. Informed that Beckett had been assigned his old stall in the visitors' room, Damon smiled and said, ''Yeah, and it didn't take them long to give up my No. 18 [Dustan Mohr], either. I remember when Nomar left he said it would be a while before they gave up his No. 5 [it has yet to be reissued]. They gave up mine pretty quickly."

Absolutely f***ing pathetic.

Maybe because Nomar came up through the system and Johnny was signed through free agency has something to do with his number being given right out and the fact that Damon went to the Yankees doesn't hurt either.

Or the fact that Nomar was here for 7 and 1 half years. He won 2 batting titles, 5 time allstar and if not for injuries he would have been a hall of famer. He will probally go into the Red Sox hall of fame
