I am biased towards Trot. (I have his jersey) I love his dirtdog style of play, and I really hope we give him a shot this year to bounce back. But if he plays poorly, then by all means let him walk at the end of the year.

Thats the general concensus. Even if he has a sub-par year, I get goosebumps of how big & long of a standing O he will receive for his last AB as a Red Sox at Fenway.

My two cents (well, maybe twelve-ish cents):

Trot IS a classic dirt dog. You've got to love his attitude because all he does is play his ass off. He's unspectacular as a player, but with the game on the line I feel confident with him up there (whether that's logical or not) and nothing would make me happier than seeing him finish his career in Boston.

That being said, as MC Hammer said, that's the emotional side of things. Trot Nixon is really a 4th outfielder at this portion of his career because a) he can't stay healthy, and B) he can't hit lefties. If the Sox could lock him up for a low price with the understanding that he's a 4th outfielder I say go for it. That being said, if the Sox can get good value for him (I don't imagine his trade value is too high right now), I say do it.

A big no thanks to Bobby Abreu. While his overall stats show that he's a superstar caliber player, this guy gets eaten alive in Philly and is always critisized for lack of effort. I DO NOT WANT ANOTHER MANNY RAMIREZ (huge talent, huge contract, bad attitude).

Also, for what it's worth, Abreu hit .304/.423/.535 at home last season (in a hitter's park), and .268/.387/.417 away from it. Granted he'd be playing half of his games in Fenway as a Red Sox, but it shows that his stats are skewed. Also, in September while the Phillies were fighting for a playoff spot, he hit .250/.395/.396. He also had a horrendous second half last year. The stats seem to back up what SFOC said about him not hitting when you NEED him to. The one constant with this guy is that he can really get on base even when he's not hitting. That's attractive by itself, and he'd be an OK #2 hitter, but at his price (contract wise) I'd have to get him very cheaply (talent wise) and Clement and Nixon is too much for him.

Carlos Lee is decent, but like others have said I wouldn't give a ton of talent for him when he could be persued in the off-season. UNLESS Manny is traded and we're in need of a RH power hitter, I say stay clear of trading for Lee at this point.

Even so, decent prospect and you're still losing Arroyo...

Like I said, WHY TRADE ARROYO AND DECENT PROSPECTS FOR HIM WHEN WE CAN SIGN HIM AND LOSE NOTHING BUT MONEY!!!!!!

stop being and idiot. the reason we would trade for him is so we can have that extra big bat for the playoff push then re-sign him at the end of the season. the prospects we would give up like a moss or murphy aren't realy in our futre anyways. and if you ever want paps to be a starter some one has to go

I understand the big bat part, but we could probably get a decent bat for a lower price. Besides, if we're going to make room for Pap, I'd rather dump Clement.

I say the only way you trade Trot is if you are going to get a younger guy who is faster and healthier other than that. I think that they should keep Trot his presence is good for the younger guys like Crisp, Stern and Mohr. He is a veteran Outfielder who can teach them alot.

first off mohr and stern are pieces of crap they will never be consistent starters in the L so who care oabout them and i think crisp would be fine without "Trot". i love trot but i love the red sox more so if it helps the team then do it

Agreed, Adam Stern is worthless. I hate that rule 5 thing too that made him stay on our team or we lose him. He isn't a great player or great talent so who cares. Dustan Mohr has been around for a while now and Coco Crisp doesn't need a mentor since he is 26 years old and an established major leaguer. Trot Nixon is good in the field, hits for some power, gets on base, knows the organization well so there is no risk that he struggles with the Boston atmosphere.

The players we have mentioned in possible trade candidates don't seem like huge upgrades. Carlos Lee, Bobby Abreu, JD Drew, etc....I think they can upgrade the offense and play solid defense but its not worth it when including a 200 inning all star pitcher.

With all these turned down trade offers, we're probably just better off waiting until the trading deadline or next offseason to try to unload Manny again.

I wouldn't go out of my way to deal Manny, because we're not going to get equal value, so we would probably be better off just riding out the contract.

Yeah, and I think the team will survive his antics. They have for the last five years.

http://www.halosheaven.com/story/2006/2/4/3125/34708 has a deal with Kelvim Escobar, Steven Shell and Juan Rivera going to Boston for Manny. Dont no how legit the source is, but he says that the Angels will announce the signing of Jeff Weaver tommorow.

This deal is pretty bad. Juan Rivera might be a temporary left fielder as a throw in, but as a major piece in a trade for Manny Ramirez it just plain doesn't make sense.

Escobar is a decent backend starter and better in the short term than Matt Clement and probably Arroyo, but he wouldn't seem to have a place in the overloaded pitching staff.

Shell is very unimpressive to me, his K rate dropped dramatically going from A to AA last year and his walk rate went way up. Two very bad signs.

All three of these guys are under 30 and arguably have their best years in front of them, but as far as a package for Manny Ramirez is concerned? No thanks.

its an angels source.....i don't think the red sox would ever do that trade in a million years. the red sox are in a position where they don't have to deal manny unless they are seriously overwelmed and that trade package is a joke.

Deal looks down right horrible. Hope there is no truth to it. They're probably just salting us back for all the howie kendrick, brandon wood, ervin santana rumors.

I don't think the sox would do a deal without Santana in it. I think Santana might actually end up being included if both teams are serious about this, I would definetly do a deal like Santana, Rivera and Erstad for Manny.

Nothing less than that though, I think that some how the deal has to level out to be in that ballpark or I, personally, wouldn't go for it.

I must say I will be incredibly disappointed if they deal Nixon. :( He's my favorite! I don't think they will, he has expressed he would like to finish out his career in Boston...his health also hasn't been the best lately, and his averages have dropped a bit since 2004. But I have faith he can pull it together and rock the house! Go lefty!! :)

lol, i think my friend said he took mushrooms once and felt colors sifting in between his toes, you can talk to this guy named carlos and have that happen for like 20 dollars a gram.

Honestly, i know Nixon is a great guy but the numbers aren't so good anymore, he still plays good defensively but he doesn't have that long range anymore. I still think he should play but not full time, hes just too worn

I do agree that the numbers aren't as good, but he did have some health problems, and I think that if he can spring back from that we might be able to see the old Nixon again. :) Only time will tell. It might be a good idea for him to not be playing full time if his health is anything like it has been for the past year. :(

RF at Fenway is a difficult place to play...and I'd say Trot's done it. Dude is a career .280 guy, and, as recently as 2003, hit over .300 with 18 and 77. Those are solid numbers, if it weren't for the recent astronomic 'roid-induced numbers being put up around the league, you'd be totally fine with that. And plus, I really like what Trot brings to the table...I think he personifies the '04 Club that took us all the way, which is hard to do considering there's been so many cast-offs from that squad. Kind of the 'We're Not Pretty To Look At, But Goddamnit, We Get The Job Done' so to speak. His durability has definitley become an issue, no doubt about it, but we have the depth in the OF with Dustan Mohr, and, eventually, Kapler. I can't see dealing Trot, I really can't. We have AMPLE starting pitching which we almost need to get rid of...I'm as big of a fan as anyone with having choices at SP, but we can't go with a 7 man rotation, and even if Papelbon goes to the Pen, that's still a 6 man rotation which won't work either.

On a side note...I like the way this year's team looks, but is anyone else at all concerned with the blatant lack of speed? Crisp can move, and Tek has the occasional delayed steal, but I don't know. I know that's really not American League Baseball anymore, especially when you've got ManRam and Big Papi in the lineup, but I still think it'd be nice to have a few guys who are basepath threats...
