Wait wait wait, whoa. When did athletes begin playing for the love of the game? Correction little leagues play for the love of the game, and they pay to play. Once you know you're good enough, except in rare instances, its all about ego especially in todays world. EGO.

EGO!

damon should produce less for 4/52 in new york than he did the last 4 years in boston for 32. In the short term the red sox lose but i think theres a good chance they win on losing damon in the long run. We can't really use the money we saved on him now cuz there isn't anyone really out there. I think you can get a far better player than Johnny next year for 4/52. Obviously it sucks in the short term

I'm fine with this. Happy the Red Sox didn't throw that kind of money at him. This will give us an edge later and not have to worry when the man turns 36 and makes that kind of money.

The Red Sox will find a capable replacement and I really find it hard to believe Ramirez is going anywhere now. Looking into Coco Crisp, Jeremy Reed, and others like Corey Patterson is fine by me. I big defensive replacement is in order. We may already have a lead off hitter on our team but I guess that is something to look into as well.

As for the Yankees....the payroll just gets bigger. They showed the lineup along side the amount of money each player makes. They really are a disgrace. Just when they talk about looking to the future and adding talent through the farm system...they go and sign Damon to one of the highest contracts this offseason. At least the rivalry took another step and I'm happy with the extra draft picks.

I just want to say one last time, that johnny is a gum and glue centerfielder two years from now and that the sox can allocate money in a much much better way with the future in mind. That said, there are worse ways to spend 12 million dollars. J-Lo took out a ten million dollar insurance policy on her ass. Thats weird.

But yeah, Damon leaving is going to be felt hard this year, and over the grand scheme of things would 12 million a year make or break a baseball team? Here is a new answer, WE DONT KNOW! There could be oppurtunities missed out on because of an expensive centerfielder who is taking up space and not producing, or it would actually work out.

It is a business, and evil corp did just lure away a co-worker for alittle more money and I'm sure it will work out great for them. But, evil corp isn't exactly a blue chip company and we don't know how things project for them in the future. RedCorp or whatever will be paying dividends to its share holders for a long time to come with some of the young employees it is bringing up through the system. f*** Ken Lay.

That post did make me happy, dave. Any bad blood you think we may have really doesnt exsist, you're second favorite vanderbiltian. Not really, but you get the idea.

Betrayed, disgusted, angry are all words that describe my feelings on this. All I have to say is that new pinstriped Yankees jersey better relieve the guilt that traitor will feel for the next 3 years. He sold his soul to the devil (Steinbrenner) and he will suffer the consequences!!!!!

Excellent first post. One of the best I have ever seen.

This further proves my point. Bernie's 7 year deal was for years 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36. Damon's is for years 32, 33, 34, 35. Bernie was good the first 4 years, but declined big time in year 5. BA, OBP, SLG, and OPS just fell off the table, as did FRAR. With Damon's contract, they are getting (probably?) 2 years instead of 4 before the decline begins. That is a big risk at $13M per.

Its a big risk at 13 mill a year when your NOT the Yankees. Dispite early reports its become clear that they can still toss money around at any rate. So when you have that kind of budget the risk actually isnt that bad at all.

Every one of those $13M is over the Cap, and as repeat offenders, the Yankees tax rate is 40%. So, it's really $18.2M per. Yes, they have the budget for it, but it is still overspending.

So how do you feel about this. Are you gonna bring yourself to like the hated Johnny Damon? Will he be respectable one he cuts his hair? (He'll never be respectable in my book) What about for the rest of the yankee fans? Is this bad or good?

I wonder how Damon can feel about this. OF COURSE its the Red Sox front office's fault. They are back stabbers, blindsided him, etc etc I'm sure he will say it just like all the rest of the stupid free agents.

I think 32 years old is starting to get past your prime. Was injured last year and has to deal with a bigger ball park this coming season. I actually think the Yankees will regret this cause I never wanted the Red Sox to throw out the kind of money. I think I would be just as angry if the Red Sox spent $13 million a year as I am the Yankees spending $13 million. Angry at the Red Sox for overspending and now angry at the Yankees for continuing to overspend.

...the never ending cycle and the rivalry gets better and better. Now I want the Red Sox to figure out a way to get a new great leadoff hitter...someone that can out perform Damon, is younger, and is cheaper....lets see those backup plans.

Ya know what would make me feel great right now....if we could somehow get Roger Clemens on our team....but the Yanks would prolly offer a one year 20 million contract before that could happen.

I always admired Damon for his ability, even though he was a f***ing idiot (in the intelligence sense, not the media hyped "Idiots" sense). I think I'll look along the same lines still. He is a very good baseball player.

nobody ever talks about how the redsox never sign any yankees, but those grubby yankers cant wait to sign our free agents. who ever wants to sell out and go to the yankees then so be it. damon is dead to me. and the yankees can have our sloppy seconds i just dont want boston signing any of those monkeys from new york. (jeter is the only one). we will be better in the long run. i cant wait to boo that clean shaven bitch next year!!!

Okay...but who's the last free agent that the Yankees let go that we actually wanted?

The sox really need to work hard to get Jeremy Reed from Seattle. Living up here in the Seattle area I've had the chance to see him play on a daily basis and this kid has some real potential. He'd be a really nice fit for the Sox with more longevity than Damon and with a lower paycheck - for now, anyway!

Well, if there is one thing to look forward to in the coming days, it's the banning of all the new trolls.

Two completely pointless posts. Bizzanned. If you have any issues with this ban, feel free to send me an e-mail. On second thought, don't. f*** off.

I think we need to come up with new and creative ways to ban people. It used to be fun but its just gotten tedious? Something akin to that genius ban rule I made for the awards thread wherein every word in a negative post would earn something one day of a ban. Any ideas?

The only idea I can think of would be to track down some addresses, find 'em, and kick their asses Jay and Silent Bob style. We could also find a way to dig into their life savings. That may even make it profitable.

so, the sox were bs'ing us when they said damon was number one priority

they offered him forty for four and that was that

bs

we just lost the best leadoff hitter in the game

and to top it off, the yanks gained the best leadoff hitter in the game

this is not good

the yanks just snached power of the al east

obviously didnt care about Boston. I guees he isnt one of those guys to take a "hometown discount"

ROFL! yeah a Boras client taking a hometown discount...i seem to remember a player who finally had a breakout mvp caliber season in his walk year only to take the money and run...Adrian Beltre anyone?

I haven't had a chance to read all the other posts just yet, but I fail to see how this means the Yankees have a spot reserved next year in the WS. As hard as it is for me to admit it, I still think Chicago is deeper and all-around better.

I personally thank him for helping us get to the promised land, but at 32 and weak arm, I'm glad the Sox weren't falling over themselves to sign him to a ridiculously long and expensive contract. The Yankees obviously have money to burn, and outside of their rotation/bullpen their only glaring weakness was CF/leadoff hitter. Typical NY goes for short fix instead of thinking long-term.

I don't understand why fans are so down on Red Sox management. I think it's been a good offseason thus far. The significant moves we have and have not made:

Acquiring Beckett, Mota, and Lowell for prospects (good prospects, but still prospects)

Acquring starting second baseman (and allstar) Mark Loretta for backup catcher Doug Mirabelli

Acquiring prospect/reliver Van Buren for no one in particular

Trading Renteria for best prospect in baseball Andy Marte

NOT getting ripped off by trading Manny Ramirez

Signing Rudy Seanez

NOT overpaying Johnny Damon

Yes we have holes, but we still have pitching to trade to fill these holes. I'm not worried at all about this season; I already like the '06 Sox more than the '05 Sox.

dude i seriously couldn't agree more. not that the sox are in a hurry to trade manny but i still think we'll be fine in the end. if nothing else we just saved $40-52 mil. over the next 4 years. you gotta think something else will open up. i doubt this is going to be the lineup we go to spring training with.

actually the sox did offer a 4 year contract like the yankees did, its just he became greedy
