SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada said Thursday he's unhappy with the team's direction and wants to be traded.

"I've been with the Orioles for two years and things haven't gone in the direction that we were expecting, so I think the best thing will be a change of scenery," Tejada told The Associated Press during a telephone interview in his native Dominican Republic.

Tejada signed a $72 million, six-year contract with the Orioles before the 2004 season.

He hit .304 with 26 home runs and 98 RBI this year, but Baltimore finished 21 games behind the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

"I've done many things with this team and I haven't seen results, and the other teams are getting stronger while the Orioles have not made any signings to strengthen the club," Tejada said.

Boston traded shortstop Edgar Renteria to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday for third base prospect Andy Marte.

Tejada came to Baltimore after playing seven years with the Oakland Athletics.

Oh I know, but he's one of if not the the top SS in baseball, thought it was worth talking about

Oh definitely worth talking about, but I know certain people are going to be like let's trade Youkilis, Clement and Marte for him or something like that.

i am, i say we trade manny to the angels for erstad and 1 great prospect, and them taking all manny's $ while we take all of erstad's $ then we turn around and trade those 1 great prospect, w/ marta for tejada, and we take about 80% of tejada's $...this would solve our ss and 1b problem, give us a great bat, hard working player, and a great friend of ortiz's, and save money for damon, and i also think we should send cash and nixon for tracey from AZ, so the opening day lineup could look something like this;

damon-

loretta

tejada

ortiz

lowell-gold

tracey

tek-gold

rondell white-sign him for 3 years/11 million

erstad-gold

thats a pretty good lineup

and if anyone is asking

erstad-8.25 million

tejada-(what we pay) 9.6 million a year for fours years

thats about 17.8 million of manny's contract and we send the other 2.2 million to AZ with nixon's 7.5 million contract...and we still have about 22 million that we saved off edgars contract and the 25 million we already had..plently of money to resign damon and bolster up of pitching staff more

Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada said Thursday he's unhappy with the team's direction and wants to be traded.

"I've been with the Orioles for two years and things haven't gone in the direction that we were expecting, so I think the best thing will be a change of scenery," Tejada told The Associated Press during a telephone interview in his native Dominican Republic.

Tejada made his comments before a number of published reports stated that Baltimore has reached a preliminary agreement on a four-year, $27.5 million contract with free agent catcher Ramon Hernandez, who would have to complete a physical before making it official.

Tejada signed a $72 million, six-year contract with the Orioles before the 2004 season.

He hit .304 with 26 home runs and 98 RBIs this year, but Baltimore finished 21 games behind the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

"I've done many things with this team and I haven't seen results, and the other teams are getting stronger while the Orioles have not made any signings to strengthen the club," Tejada said.

The Orioles say they are still looking for help at both first base and in the outfield, and that they'd also like to add depth to the starting rotation and bullpen. Thus far, the team's decision-makers have withstood the temptation to trade some of their young pitching, which was very much in demand at the Winter Meetings.

"Anytime you're trying to trade a player, you really have to take into consideration a lot of factors. And one of them is the marketplace," said Jim Duquette, Baltimore's vice president of baseball operations. "If it wasn't clear earlier, it became clear in the last two weeks that the cost of replacing a quality pitcher is so high that it would be very difficult for us to trade a pitcher of ours. It would have to be a unique situation."

There is some speculation that, with the addition of Hernandez, the Orioles will try to deal catcher Javy Lopez for pitching help.

Tejada came to Baltimore after playing seven years with the Oakland Athletics.

This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

this might meen the sox will be interested and maybe give up marte to get him since they need a ss

Marte would make sense for us, but they have Melvin Mora there too. It would be amazing if we could pull a trade of for Mora while keeping Lester and Marte, but they'd probably be reluctant to move him in the division.

OMG, this seems like a HUGE coincidence that Tejada asks for a trade the same day we get rid of Renteria... fate?

I might also add that he is good friends with David Ortiz

Yeah, can't forget the two of them hanging out during the home run derby the 2004 all star game.

Tejada basically quit on the Orioles late in the season, and now he wants out just two years into a six-year deal. Saying he doesn't like the direction is ridiculous. The Orioles are willing to spend money -- they had the high offer to Paul Konerko on the table -- it's just that no one is as eager to take it as Tejada was when he made his way to the high bidder. Plus, they now have the game's best pitching coach. Anyone who would turn on his team like Tejada has looks like a bad risk to us, even if his $72 million contract seems pretty reasonable right now. Of course, he'll probably be linked to the Red Sox right away. Dec. 8 - 7:37 pm et

FOR

Tejada

id love to se him playing here. he's one of the hardest workers in the league

Stop with all these pipe dreams for trade proposals. If I see one more every crap player on the red sox and one guy who is ok for the best player in universe, im going to cry.

The sox have no shot at this. None, ZERO. Unless the Orioles decide they want manny. Its would work out money wise and then it would make the whole trading a franchise player within the division thing doable because they'd also be getting a monster.

That won't happen I don't think. The sox will not trade them what they will want, they won't give up their future for this guy. Don't get too excited, i know its hard, but I would not be giving up Marte for anyone outside of a knock out pitcher like a healthy mark prior or a roy oswalt.

NO MORE ACID FLASHBACK TRADES!

STOP...JUST STOP. Manny for an aging first baseman and ONE prospect...they would do that every day and twice on Sunday. AT the LEAST we would need two proven and great vets and 2 FANTASTIC prospects...trading Manny is now unacceptable under ANY circumstances, AT ALL. If we tarde him too it will look like were planning for the future OR getting cheap...NEVER! Just stop bro...

If we were to EVER get Chad Tracy from the D'backs Manny would have to go there, PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Dude stop....

Who cares if Mannys WHOLE salary is taken...if we traded him, we would have to pay some of his...dude, QUIT making MVP trades bro. Come on...its just wrong...

Oh and we would have to give Baltimore at least Tek, Marte, Erstad, 2 spects and money for Tejada...in other words it (your proposed trade) won't happen.

Let me ask you this...WOULD YOU accept Marte, and ONE great prospect for MIGUEL TEJADA???

I'll answer that for you...NO, you wouldn't. Unless your the Florida Marlins, and your not.

Posted

ok they wouldn't want Tek, they just signed Ramon Hernandez.

Trading for Tejada doesn't seem all that unreasonable, it seems like more than just a coincidence that Tejada asks for a trade the same day we trade Renteria.

I know Baltimore plays in our division, but it's not like with the Yankees where we would never directly deal with them. Remember, baseball is a business more than anything else, if you have a $72 million dollar headache, your going to give it to whoever will take him at the right price.

You have to look at things from a Baltimore perspective. This off-season has been a disaster. They couldn't get Konerko, they haven't been able to sign any pitchers, the team is pretty much in a slide. Toronto has gotten WAY better and the Red Sox and Yankees are as usual the class of the AL East. Does Baltimore want to field a 80+ million dollar team that's going to be competing with Tampa Bay for last place?

So, just to sum up, yeah Tejada may be just be blowing off some steam. But lets be honest here, if Baltimore doesn't start getting some talent on that team, would you blame them if they Traded Tejeda in favor of making it a more profitable season?

I wouldn't.

Interesting now that we need a short stop

Tejada is owed 72 million for the next 5 year

Manny is 57 million for the next 3

Do you think Boston and Baltimore could work out a trade?

If so I would be all for it

Posted

I've got to agree with you. Unfortunately, I don't think Baltimore is on Manny's wish list, but i would be on mine....

We would get a better defensive shortstop and have a younger, similar righthanded power bat, for a longer guaranted time at less money. With the 5 million saved yearly, we could be sure to sign Damon or go after another productive outfielder. We could also possibly package Marte with one of our extra starters and get a really productive left fielder, who could more regularly play defense - maybe Huff from Tampa Bay, (plus another reliever), who can play both outfield and 1B, giving Tito some room to manage games.

Maybe make it a 3-way trade, to get Manny on a team he okays.

I also stated that we would take 80% of Tejada's salary, which has 4 years/48 million remaining on it, if we take 80% of that it is 38.4 million, thats how much the O's save, 38.4 million dollars, 2 top prospects and 38.4 million sounds like a fair trade to me
