No it wouldnt, actually. I never said not to talk about trades. I said not to talk about possible deals that have .00001% chance of happening. This is actually a pretty embarassing thread, because a lot of people think we can get Tejada.

Orioles' Tejada Seeks Trade, Wants 'Change of Scenery'

By Jorge Arangure Jr.

Washington Post Staff Writer

Friday, December 9, 2005; E08

DALLAS, Dec. 8 -- It has taken just two losing seasons for Miguel Tejada, signed before the 2004 season to a six-year, $72 million contract with the expectation that the all-star shortstop would become the cornerstone of the Baltimore Orioles franchise, to become frustrated with the organization and ask for a trade.

In a phone interview in the Dominican Republic with the Associated Press, Tejada said he would like to move on.

"I've been with the Orioles for two years and things haven't gone in the direction that we were expecting, so I think the best thing will be a change of scenery," Tejada said. "I've done many things with this team and I haven't seen results, and the other teams are getting stronger while the Orioles have not made any signings to strengthen the club."

What has already been a tumultuous year for Baltimore has now gotten worse.

"I actually had a phone call in to him this week," Orioles Manager Sam Perlozzo said. "He's not returned the call. Maybe this is why. I think probably the level-headed thing is to find out what's going on and then comment after that."

Teammates were shocked that Tejada, highly regarded in the clubhouse for his competitive fire and his affability, would express such feelings through the media.

"Oh my goodness," Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora, vacationing in Puerto Rico, said. "That's a big thing. It's a big loss for the team if Tejada leaves. I never would have expected him to make such comments."

Orioles officials, who were traveling home after spending a week in Dallas for the winter meetings, were not immediately available for comment. Tejada's representatives did not return several phone calls.

Rumors had circulated this week at the winter meetings that Tejada had been unhappy. But Orioles Executive Vice President Mike Flanagan denied those rumors and said he had talked to the shortstop on Tuesday.

"He's on board with what we're doing," Flanagan said then.

When asked if it was unusual that he had spoken to Tejada, Flanagan said, "We try to touch base with all of our players."

Mora said he had not spoken to Tejada this offseason but had planned to do so next week when the shortstop made a trip to Venezuela to participate in a charity home run derby.

"It's something difficult," Mora said. "I don't even know what to say. I think he's happy with the team but it's not easy to play for a losing team."

Tejada was signed prior to the 2004 season and he responded with two stellar seasons, which included a fifth-place finish in the Most Valuable Player Award voting in 2004. Tejada, the MVP in the American League in 2002 with the Oakland A's, was the home run derby champion in 2004 and was the All Star game MVP in 2005.

But toward the end of the year Tejada appeared worn down and unhappy by an Orioles season mired in controversy. Tejada's season was interrupted when his name surfaced as part of Rafael Palmeiro's congressional investigation into the first baseman's positive steroid test. In a report released by the House Government Reform Committee, two teammates testified that they had injected Tejada at least 40 times each with a B-12 vitamin shot. Perhaps that has also partly motivated Tejada to seek a trade.

"If this is true, it puts a damper on the offseason," Orioles outfielder Jay Gibbons said. "That doesn't sound like Tejada. He's a very positive guy. We can't have him unhappy."

It would seem unlikely that the Orioles would immediately grant Tejada's wish without trying to convince him to stay. And if they did look to trade Tejada it would seem unlikely they could find equal value or many teams who could afford to take on the $60 million the shortstop is owed through the next four seasons. But he is widely regarded as one of the best players in baseball.

"We need him happy," Gibbons said. "He's the team leader. I'm hoping he was frustrated or it was taken out of context."

Dallas // Unhappy with the direction of the Orioles' franchise, Miguel Tejada, probably the club's best player since Cal Ripken's heyday, wants to play elsewhere next season.

In a telephone interview with the Associated Press in his native Dominican Republic, the All-Star shortstop, who is coming off a tumultuous season during which his name was intertwined with the Rafael Palmeiro steroid controversy, lamented the franchise's lack of progress and called for a "change of scenery."

"I've been with the Orioles for two years and things haven't gone in the direction that we were expecting, so I think the best thing will be a change of scenery," Tejada said. "I've done many things with the team and I haven't seen results and the other teams are getting stronger while the Orioles have not made any signings to strengthen the club."

Tejada, 29, was unavailable for comment last night. Diego Bentz, Tejada's agent, declined to react to his client's comments before speaking to him first. However, Orioles All-Star third baseman Melvin Mora ardently supported one of his closest friends on the team.

"I think he is right," said Mora, speaking from Puerto Rico, where he is on vacation with his family. He said he spoke to Tejada three days ago, but Tejada's apparent wishes to be traded never came up. "He says what he feels and that's pretty much what has happened. You let people go like nothing and you do nothing to help this club. And he wants to go someplace to compete. I don't blame him. We want [the front office] to do something."

Tejada's and Mora's comments came just hours after the Orioles' front office finished business at baseball's winter meetings. The Orioles, who have suffered through eight straight losing seasons, added setup reliever LaTroy Hawkins, acquired in a trade with San Francisco for Steve Kline, and San Diego free-agent catcher Ramon Hernandez.

"Who is going to pitch for us?" added Mora, who has one year left on his contract. "I don't care what people think of what Tejada says. We know exactly what he says because we feel it."

The timing of Tejada's declaration surprised Orioles executive vice president Mike Flanagan, who arrived home late last night to a slew of phone messages. He said earlier this week that the club talked to Tejada a couple of times to ask for input, and he was "on board with what we're doing."

Flanagan said late last night that he believes that Hernandez, a former teammate of Tejada's in Oakland, is a godfather of one of Tejada's two children.

"I can't make any comment on his comments tonight because I haven't spoken to him or his agents directly," said Flanagan, who said that neither Tejada nor his agents have voiced any unhappiness about the shortstop being with the Orioles. "It is a surprise."

Reached last night at his home, Orioles owner Peter G. Angelos declined to comment when asked if the Orioles would consider dealing Tejada, who hit .304 with 26 home runs and 98 RBIs this season, but whose numbers faded in the second half.

"He is an exciting player and he plays to win," said Angelos, who signed Tejada from Oakland to a six-year, $72 million contract before the 2004 season. "I am disappointed and surprised to hear him say that."

Earlier this week, Bentz acknowledged that Tejada, who went to the playoffs in four of his seven seasons with the A's, was frustrated from two straight losing seasons. "He was serious when he said he wants to win," Bentz said.

Tejada grew noticeably distant through the second half of the season as the once first-place Orioles plummeted to fourth in the American League East. One theory was that a spat with fellow Dominican Sammy Sosa led to Tejada's dour countenance. Several of his teammates also acknowledged that Tejada grew unhappy with former manager Lee Mazzilli.

But before the season ended, it was revealed Palmeiro, who failed a drug test and was suspended in August, suggested he may have received a tainted supply of the vitamin B-12 from Tejada.

Although Tejada's liquid vitamins were found to be clean by Major League Baseball, the cloud hung over the shortstop. He had to appear before a congressional committee to explain about the B-12 supply. Two of his teammates told Congress that they also received the injectable form of the vitamin, available only by prescription in the United States, from Tejada, who had brought it from the Dominican. One of the teammates said he had injected Tejada between 70 and 80 times in two seasons in the Orioles' clubhouse.

"Everybody knew he wasn't the same Miggy in the second half - the rah-rah stuff and on the field," said outfielder Jay Gibbons, who called Tejada's comments "out of character."

"We need Miggy on board with us and being our team leader like he has been."

Baltimore Sun

in the washington post, he was shocked by tejada's comments, now he is agreeing with him.

How many of you would trade Ramirez for Tejada? There are rumors this might happen. We are not gonna stick with some scrub as our opening day starter... not this team. I say we do that trade and then sign damon and dave roberts and our lineup is set.
Posted
Exactly. there is no possible chance see this happening or want it to happen. Manny can not be sent to a division rival.Instead of a scrub we could sign someone like Nomah pokey or trade for o cab. Bring back a fan favorite.

i definately think the sox should go after this trade, and i also think the angels still want manny, i just think we wanted too much...what i think we should do is spin manny to the angels for erstad, 1 great prospect, and them to pay the rest of manny's contract,(we would pay erstads), then we take that one great prospect, and add marte to it, and vouch to pay about 80%-85% of tejada's contract(roughy about 38.4-40.8 million over 4 years, bout 9.6-10.2 million a year) thats pretty fair as well, because we shave 20 million of the free agent market, minus tejada's 10.2(at the most) gives us 9.8 more million to resign damon with, plus the money we save from renteria's contract, and the 25 million we already had to spend, this gives us roughy 42.1 million dollars for free agents...we could give damon his 4 year/40 million and have 32.1 million left, then i say we should sign Rondell White as a LF for 3 years/12 million and 28.1 million, then we trade nixon to AZ for Chad Tracey(to fill starting RF, and he can also play LF and 1b, and if needed 3b), but we pay a part of nixon's 7.5 million contract, roughy about 3 million, which gives us about 25.1 million left for places we need to strengthen up, this would be a great, hardworking, clutch player lineup with 3 gold glovers at positions.

The Red Sox are one of the four clubs that Darin Erstad has on his no-trade list this year and tracy would be very hard to get unless hes in some crazy manny deal.

The Red Sox are one of the four clubs that Darin Erstad has on his no-trade list this year.

Erstad has been mentioned in the Manny Ramirez speculation, and it's even possible Boston could consider a separate deal for him if Johnny Damon leaves, but not if he's unwilling to join the team. Dec. 9, 2005 - 2:06 pm et

Trading away marte isn't going to happen. Can we stop with the trading prospects for this guy thing? It isn't going to happen, its just boring throwing out all these trade proposals like this. None of them will happen so lets come down to earth for a little while.
Posted
I know I wouldn't. Unless Manny is on Boston they won't want him in their division so this trade will never happen.

Hahhaha. Please will someone help out and get rid of about 5 of these Tejada threads? Seriously theres a million of them. Come on people how hard is it to look if there already is one.

The Globe pretty much spells it out for you doubters...

"Boston needs a shortstop. Tejada wants to be traded. Manny Ramirez wants to be traded.

If you need assistance connecting the dots, perhaps now is a good time to put down the rubber cement. "

won't happen unless you get a third team. three team deals fall apart a lot. thats really all you can say. The O's aren't going to trade him but if they do its going to be to blow up their roster and inject some youth into that system, so in other words no big fat contracts like Manny. Guess what, I'm not willing to trade the youth it would take to get that guy. If Marte doesn't get you Lugo, I shudder to think the obsene price tag that will be on Tejada. Forget it.

Blown up contracts?? Like Tejada's?? At this point in Manny's contract the money is pretty much the same. Gordon Edes showed us that much.

Tejada doesn't want to be in Baltimore.

Manny doesn't want to be in Boston.

Red Sox need a short stop.

Baltimore has plenty of room in there average outfield for Manny Ramirez.

So why would this happen...well I'm sure both teams don't want players on there teams who don't want to be there and would create a potential problem. Not to mention the Orioles haven't made much noice...this would be the biggest noise of the offseason...don't you think the Orioles fans would get excited....not to mention with everything Sosa and Palmeiro I bet the Orioles would like a mix up. So I'm going to stay optimistic cause it makes sense...it just comes down to the teams figuring it out. As far as the "no trading within divisions" thing....in this case both teams are helping each other

You're not understanding my point. If indeed the O's decide to trade him, it will not be for another inflated contract, but instead they will blow up the team, re-invent the franchise and certainly will not be looking to take on a 34 year old manny ramirez who is owed 54 million dollars over the next 3 years. If indeed they do decide to trade Tejada, its not as simple as you're making it sound.

It isn't a "Hey you have a guy who hates you, and we have a guy who hates us, wanna swap and see if it works out?"

If you think baseball execs are going to trade based on that and not based on their own team needs, then you must be pretty niave. Sure, Tejada is a shortstop and the sox need one. Yeah, he wants to leave and so does manny. The O's needs and the sox needs in the end won't draw a match. This isn't that simple.

I stand by this, the only way Tejada comes to the Red Sox is if there is a 3rd team involved that will take manny and send prospects to the O's.

I really have no intentions of posting in this again, its pretty clear cut, this is just too complicated to get done and is nothing more than a pipe dream. I mean seriously, you have to know that you're dreaming. In dreams everything works out nice, but we've seen what a lineup of AllStars can get you, look at new york. Do you want your team to regress like that? Put the pieces together, trading the farm system for all stars never really works out. The Yankees were successful when they were bringing up home grown talent, same of the Big Red Machine, and other winning teams. The sox are starting to get into that trend, don't wish it all away.

So with that I bid this thread adieu and goodbye, or whatever that means. The Tejada idea sucks. Lets go sign Alex Gonzalez and you guys should really all relax on the pot.

Crazy question. Wouldn't a package of Lester and Pappelbon be better than any offer anyone would give Baltimore? At first thought I'd think thats giving up too much on our end, but if Manny changed him mind about wanting to be traded in order to play with Tejada and Ortiz and really be apart of something special here I think I would do it. An article in tomorrow mornings herald makes it seem like the Orioles are strongly considering honoring Tejadas request(http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=116410), and i don't see them getting a better offer than this. This would leave us enough money to sign Encarnacion for center, or trade wells and sign Johnny.
