Olerud should be in the lineup all the time down the stretch. He is more consistent. I like Millar a lot and I know he has been on a tear @ Fenway lately but Olerud has come up with some clutch hits when Tito has put him in. Not to mention Olerud is a former Gold Glove Winner, and we'll need all the defense we can get when we get into the late innings because our bullpen gives up a lot of hits. What does everyone else think?

Millar has come up in some clutch hits as well, against Baltimore in a tied game he had hit a 2-run shot to put the red sox on top 7-5. The Chicago White Sox game with 2 outs in 9th inning he got that double off the monster which was almost a homerun to set up tony g's 3-run homerun. Lets not forget how he started the offense up last night as well. I think its smart for Francona to stick to the plan hes got, platoon Millar and Olerud to keep their bats at a healthy point. plus also the state of Olerud's legs put a question mark on him being an everyday starter.
Posted
The platoon makes much more sense now that Millar is contributing offensively. Olerud's great bat and defense makes Tito's choice difficult sometimes, but at least Millar seems to have awakened from his season-long slumber.

Sox can't send him down because Pawtucket Sox games are now over for the season, and they cant release him either. So as indicated by NESN, Millar and Olerud have 1st base all to themselves and no room for Petagine, so think of him as a mascot on the bench

I'd like to see Olerud the rest of the year but he's too old to start every single game from here on out. I don't mind Millar playing as long as he keeps hitting the ball don't get me wrong I still can't stand the guy and I think he needs to go but w.e helps the team win is good for now.

Hi Guys and Gals...I'm just an old 60 year old widower living in London Ontario Canada...love baseball and have been following John Olerud since he started so now my team is the BOSOX!

Here's just a simple comment...I really hate typing.

Olerud should be playing every game from now on...excellent record for all the few full games he has played...maybe 28 to 30! Check out the stats...I can't find them only in my head.

He's only 37 but runs like a snail with a limp!:o He is playing his best baseball ever and can continue to do so and help Boston repeat!!!

It is my actual belief that had Olerud not injured his foot in the world series last year while with the Yankees so that he didn't play again, Boston would not have won the world series...that's how crutial I think he is and was.

I do not understand that Tino guy at all!

Any way GO SOX and GO Olerud!!! B)

I agree.

yet somehow the threads that praise Millar have far less posts than the ones bashing him did. the way I see it, you don't have the right to criticize the guy when he's playing bad if you aren't gonna praise him when he's playing well

The problem is they can't use Olerud every day down the stretch his body can't handle it he has terrible knees and also Millar hasn't been playing too bad of late.

granted there are lots of reasons to be pissed today and the entire team looked pretty lousy last night. BUt more than anyone I think Millar looked shittier.

He a waste and an awful player and it wont be soon enough to see him leave.

Last night was a typical non clutch, waste. Tito is a complete moron to play millar ever. I am sick iof this well he helped us win the championshiop ******** for both millar and foulke, that was then this is now, and they both suck and both hurt the team.

f***ing fat ass.

What is wrong with that Penguin Pinhead Francona...Millar is listed as starting again tonite!

They have been losing everytime he plays lately...Olerud has the better defensive and hitting skills...screw it ...if he's that stupid ...I just can't take his stupidity anymore!!! :wtf:  :(

Guess Francona wants Boston to lose...mark my words!

Millar is most likely starting so that Olerud can get some rest. They need him against the Yankees as much as possible and he can't play everyday he's got too many knee problems.

Hey Ray10...John doesn't nor has he ever had any knee problems...he whacked the inside of his own foot last year with his bat somehow while playing for the Yankees in the 3rd game that they beat Boston...I also believe he hit the winning homer in that game although it may have been game two.

He was then out for the rest of playoffs had surgery over the winter and still had a sore foot into the new season this year and thus Boston won...had he played in any (save for one appearance in the remaining games against Boston last year...I assure you Boston would not have won the world series.

You may think he has bad knees because his running speed is that of a snail with a limp as I may have said before! :D

He has won two world series is much taller 6"5" with a much longer reach for infield hits etc... and is a much more intelligent player than Millar witnessed 2 games ago when he ran too home after catching the popup cause the Boston pitcher forgot to cover home and stayed on the mound with a runner on third.

I doubt that Millar would haave the wherewithall to have done that.

I think Millar has Francona in his pocket somehow.

Hell, in last nites game with guys on 2nd and 3rd and Millar up...I would have put in Olerud to hit...as it stands Millar blew it and Boston lost...what a doughhead that Francona is...Anyone got his dugout phone number so I can tune him in??? ;)

riverside's obligatory, predictable delusional spin aside, millar sucks so f***ing bad, leaving 5 on again last night. His useless non-clutch hittingis rearing its ugly head again.

what a pathetic last two games under the so-called pressure of the final week, we have looked like we did in May. Tito is sticking to a his loyalty for millar and that is unjustifable and simply deranged.

I am counting the minutes until we never have to see this fat f***ing piece of worthless piec of s*** in a sox uniform again.

listen pal i was taking about that his f***ing defense has improved, not his offense

Posted

he's slow moving weak hitting fat slob, and one or two plays which any first baseman could make doesnt justify a compliment or playing time-pal.

you're the guy who just the other day that posted some ridiculous spin stating that millar was one of the guys carrying this iteam in september with his whopping 5 rbi's..pal.

Posted

again for emphasis...

he has 2 hrs and 5 rbi's for the entire month of september.

the batboy has done more for this club in this crucial month than millar.and you talk about his defense. Try this on for size-spin boy.

He left as many runners on base last night than he has hit in this entire month.

You guys are arguing about Millar, but the fact is that Millar did not add himself to the lineup list. It was his manager who put him in this lineup. Therefore all the blame should go to his manager!

Look at how he is managing this series: on Tuesday Sox played two games. Game1=Wakefield, game2=Schilling

Everybody knows that Schilling is struggling and he is likely not to pitch more than 6 or 7 innings. On the other hand Wakefield has been pitching 8 or 9 innings consistently.

Papelbon is a starting pitcher, so if you use him in the bullpen, he can be used as a long reliever. Mike Myers, and Bradford are NOT long relievers!

A smart manager would have used the following combinations:

1-Wakefield with Bradford/Myers.

2-Schillings with Papelbon in same game, and immediately take Schillings out of the game if he is not pitching well.

Dumb Francona did the followings:

1-Wakefield with Papelbon.

2-Schillings with Mike Myers, and Bradford, and he made sure to keep struggling Schillings in the game until Schillings shot himself in the foot and we lost the game, and the Sox’s winning momentum is killed (they easily lost the next game).

I am not even going to talk about his poor lineup choices.

Sox, Yanks, and Guardians are pretty equal teams; it will take few smart moves by managers to tip the scale to one team or the other!

We DO NOT have a smart manager to tip the scale in our favor. Instead, we have dumb Francona because Theo wanted to do it on the cheap!

The Sox team has to play much harder to compensate for their manager’s stupidity.

You're right. Of course, but this is a millar thread so I limited my predictable angst against him and him alone, but the real knucklehead here is francona for playing him at all, ever.

I still contend that the Yankees win last year if Olerud doesn't get hurt, but that's just a small opinion, not taking anything away from the comeback. I don't know if he can make that type of an impact for you guys this last series, and possibly the postseason. However there is no doubt in my mind you would be better served with Millar being a cheerleader for the playoffs. Olerud is a smart hitter, the kind you want up, especially if you are down 5 leading off an inning. Guys like him start rallies, ala Paul O'Neill.

I wholeheartedly agree about the fact that Tito isn't too bloody smart as a coach particularly as right now each game is so important.

Playing Millar in any game this week was a definite no-no as I mentioned earlier in this thread and suggested Olerud play out to the end of the season.

But Penguin Pinhead Francona puts Millar in the second game of the double header and what happens they lose and leaves guys on 2nd and 3rd.

Last night plays Millar again ...leaves bases loaded and they lose. Puts Olerud in in the 8th draws a walk then a single and they fizzle.

Why even bother putting Olerud in in the 8th losing by 5...play him from the start...it's tough coming into the game in the last inning or two even for Olerod both mentally and physically.

That's my 3 cents worth...if he doesn't play John the next 4 games say goodbye to everything.

Mind you I don't expect Olerud to perform miracles though he has the ability but after the recent screwups costing 2 games by Francona he better forget his frienship with Millar and play Olerud all the way!

Go Sox!!!!

All this "resting Olerud" crap needs to stop.....4 games left....if Johnny Helmet can't make it through 4 games then whats the use. The reason he used Millar was cause a lefty was on the mound. I don't think that is a good reason...play Olerud anyways...he can hit lefty and righty pitchers. I can see Olerud delivering with 2 out and men on base....I cannot see Millar doing it
Posted

I JUST can't believe this s***.

Millar is starting tonight again?????

This year Olerud's average against lefties is quite high ove .300 and he's not tired at all...he just turned 37 Millar is 35.

Keping Olerud from regular play with his expertise talent and experience makes absolutely no sense and makes him stale for a regular playing role. Gotta make him wonder what the F is going on as well!

I cannot comprehend that idiot coach at all.. :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

Francona has got to be a mental baseball midget !!

Good Luck tonite Sox!!!....mutter mutter mutter...

Olerud is a superior player end of discussion! Olerud is a better 1rst baseman, a better average hitter and a better home run hitter! Only on the Red Sox, only from the braindead manager of Terry Francona's mind is Millar better. Millar KILLS this team in the clutch. For example last night he came up twice with runners on base and ended the inning with first pitch pop ups.

Olerud all throughout his career has been a solid hitter who is capable of being WHITE hot. He is a gold glover and a former batting champ. It's a joke that such a stiff like Millar starts over him.
