Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres Exchange Names; Duran Likely To Stay Put...For Now

That deal could work on BTV, meaning it’s fair by their standards.  Clearly, Breslow is aiming higher than “fair.”

Duran has a surplus value of $47mill.  Salas has a surplus value of $32mill.  Cease has a surplus value of $10mill.  RHP Kash Mayfield ($4.5mill) makes it about as even as could be.

But as Breslow has plenty of time to figure out what to do with Duran, he clearly has no plans to just take best offer…

To me Duran is worth more right now than what the Padres are offering.  Salas and Cease don't help at all.

Cease is a definite help.  Even in his down year, hes better than Buehler.  And with potential to be elite, as his track record suggests.

But he’s only short term.  I wouldn’t give 3 years of Duran up for 2 months of Cease and the hope that 18yo Ethan Salas can make it worthwhile…

They probably will keep both.  But the point was just because they didn’t trade him this past season didnt mean they can no longer sell high on him.  And while there is no need, they do appear to be talking.

That they passed up Cease and Salas strongly suggests they’re not moving him just for the best offer they get.

Interesting to me is that the Dodgers could clearly use Duran and have expressed interest, the Sox are interested in Rushing, the two players align pretty well on BTV, but no mention of this proposal anywhere.   So again, it’s looking like the Sox need to be blown away to deal him…

The only regular it would be nice to move would be Yoshida, unless they can get his 5’1” frame to become useful as a 1b.

I do think the Sox have to give up something substantial from the minors.  Especially for a rotation upgrade, unless they just get a cheap filler rental…

I’d love to add Cease. But not for Duran.  Maybe Sandlin?  Possibly go as high as Early? Definite pass if the price is Arias, Tolle and maybe even Password…

He got hit by a Lindor line drive in the third and they let him pitch two more innings and didn’t get him checked out till after game? Seems incredibly stupid on Padres part

 

SD couldn't take Cease out because he'd be considered damaged goods at the deadline.

The Pads needed to show all the other GMs that he was still right in the head.

Or what was left in his head.
