    Just my guess, but I think JH wanted B2B WSC, and was willing to spend for that privilege. Once that was gone, he thought we were an 84-win, #1 payroll, and #30 farm team. Both DD and Bloom made perfect sense to me.

    I actually proposed a JBJ for Torres/Soler during the Cubs run in 2016. So I always had an interest in him, until he got the Yankee stink on him. But if the Cubs were willing (and I suspect eager) to get draft picks for him, I think they would take a non-premium prospect return for him. They might already be thinking of McGonigle as being close to ready for the show.

    You lived with Devers at 3B for a long time. I think he can be a real good hitter, but I don't see a lot of glove in his future. My animal spirit thinks this guy will be a lot of fun in the #5/6 slot, but my head keeps questioning where he will play until Yoshida is gone.

    I'm not a fan of Gleyber, but the Tigers were probably indifferent to him at that price point. They'd be happy with him staying for $20M, and they'd be happy with the draft picks.

    I think a lot of RS would agree with you. The disaster wouldn't be not getting Bregman. The disaster would be putting our money back in the piggy bank. If we have $35M to spend, it'll make little difference where we spend it, so long as we spend it.

    It was like when we acquired Gonzo & CC almost simultaneously. Neither were my favorite choices, but it's difficult to be sad when you acquire that much talent.

    My thinking as well. The 'fair' calculation I came up with was $125M/5 (3.5/3.0/2.5/2.0/1.5/1.0) * 9.5. And I'd have added $10M for a 6th year for AAV purposes. Like you said, if the RS wanted to add another $5M per, because he's a good player at a key position, it would've been an overpay (by my calcs), but I'd have been fine.

    I'm not sure how one does that. It's like deciding whether not someone at the poker table is bluffing. If Boras told Breslow the offer was $170M/5, how does Breslow know if that's correct? Or how much is being deferred? I doubt Boras has a tell. My guess here is that Breslow put some percentages into the chances of Boras being truthful or lying, or exaggerating, compared that to whatever limits he had in mind, and made a call. But no one here knows exactly what happened.

    Just irt the rigidity issue, and picking lanes, etc., Breslow has been here two years. Just because he traded for and extended Crochet doesn't mean he is big-market poker player, and nor does the fact that he either didn't believe Bregman or didn't care to match the Cubs, doesn't make him cheap. You need years to attach a pattern to people.

    That's how it should be. Picking a single lane is not optimal, imo. If you have a prospect that you see no future in, you should move him. If you see someone out there you think has promise, you should acquire him.

    Since 1987. Still pretty good. And I saw nothing wrong with selling off some assets if you're not making the playoffs.

    One of DD's best moves was on JD's signing, and JD's opt-out. There was a story every week about the number of teams interested in JD. DD never bit, never panicked, and stuck with his offer. Many fans, including some in here, wanted DD to raise his offer to 'whatever it takes'. I agreed with DD. He ignored the stories, stuck with offer, and was proven right. But even if JD did have a better offer, I still would've agreed with DD. He made an educated decision based on the AL teams that needed a DH. I wouldn't have said it was 'bad' if he been proven wrong. No one gets all these things right.

    I'd have done if I were the RS. Spending $5.5M at 3rd leaves a lot of money for other imporovements (assuming they spend it).

    But if I own a team, I've already made a ton of money. And I'm not saying I'd simply ignore the P&L, but it's a bit like you saved up money in your 401k all your life, but then don't want to spend any of it in retirement.

    For me, it depends on what I am looking for. If I want to sum up a player's last three years, I use BR. If I want to check a rookie's final two months, I use BR. If I want to find a pitchers' velocity trend, or K-BB%, I use FG.

    At some point, and not particularly abstract, it is more about fit than 0.5. I want a righty at 2B/3B., and I will give away 0.5 to get one. And it depends on duration. Suarez at 2 years v Bregman at 5 years, is worth taking slightly worse WAR.

    They are rather common now. In Bregman's case, he wanted to ensure he had a chance at a bounce-back season and to re-enter free agency. If you're coming off a good platform year, it is probably unimportant. This is the same reason why Alonso took a one-year contract, and why the NYY are offering Bellinger opt-outs.

    Since I have no idea how he communicates with other teams, I still don't care. I assume most trades are made on the basis of value.

    That's why I don't get worked up about these things. I have my preferences, as does everyone else. But if the team adds another $25M in spending, the $25M number means a heck of a lot more than my preference.

    To me, just focus on WAR. In a vacuum, I prefer OBP over HRs, but if the WAR difference between Bregman and Suarez is only 1.4, then the OBP/SLG difference is almost inconsequential.

    Most of these devices simply make research easier, or more thorough. Men's Health had an interesting article on this. The value of AI to the individual is that the individual can do a much more thorough search on their symptoms than any doctor can. A doctor gives you 15 minutes, with their knowledge limited to their specialties. I can input searches for 15 minutes, get a result in 5 seconds, then re-focus the search in another 15 minutes. You'll be able come up with a number of solutions, including the million-to-one shot.

    Not everyone can sign them, but there is not doubt that at least 10 teams can afford them. IRT to drafting them, that's a solid no. Most of these guys, if not all, have put in a lot of time in Japan. If they play in Japan until age 27, it would be ridiculous to expect them to put in another 6 years in MLB before becoming a FA.

    Yes and no. Unless you some type of monopolistic aspect to your company, then you have to continually pursue the customer. We kept improving our products because we always wanted to stay ahead of our competitors. Of course, BB is a monopoly. But even then, teams lose their attendance if they don't stay ahead of their competition.

    I agree 100%. As a Raiders' fan, I had this conversation with my Bears' friend. While Chicago has made unbelievable improvements over the past few years (and not just Caleb), the Raiders are now paying 4-5 coaches. You cannot fix stupid with more money. Just irt to Pitt and Cincy, both teams should be moving in. I think increased attendance and/or a playoff spot can easily pay for another $30M in acquisitions. Even if I am wrong, what's the point of owning a team if you don't want to compete.
