  1. I'd go one step further and suggest that his 107+ in his previous 5 years is hardly elite. Just like many other players, I consider him an option, but nowhere near an elite option. I'd bet on Paredes having a higher bWAR over the next two years. It's all about cost.
  2. I've been told my look of righteous indignation is very similar to my look of derisive scorn.
  3. Similar to signing Crawford. What good is speed when you play your back to the wall?
  4. Everything is different. TBH, I'm not sure why fans are comparing the two. Right now (and one years is not a trend), Breslow is much more like DD than Bloom. Both DD and Breslow inherited a great young core, are being given a ton of spending money, and are allowed to trade some of the farm. Bloom is just the opposite.
  5. If they have an interest, they won't tell you. Not in BB, and not in the real world.
  6. He has to be in CF. His defensive skills are pedestrian outside of world-class speed.
  7. I doubt it. We'd simply be talking about needing an upgrade at #3 instead. I'm not guaranteeing anything with Gray, but I wouldn't turn down a deal like that regardless of what future plans might be.
  8. No. There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self. I just wanted to use that quote. But a gentleman takes satisfaction in knowing that he was right; not in pointing out that others were wrong.
  9. We're at $184.6 now for 2027, plus maybe $51M for arb and options. My guess is that the players main objection will be an increase in the tax levels, so maybe call 2027 a $252M cap, giving us ~ $16M to cover closer and 3B. If we did something like Duran for Paredes+, we could stay under the cap.
  10. I agree on no more biggies. But now is the time that a guy like DD would mention that, if you are in for $265M, you might as well be in for $283M. And that you took some serious flak from fans for hiring Bloom. Now that you are seeing some of the benefits from that hire, make use of some of the assets he left you with. It does 'have to be' Paredes, but seldom do I see a situation that makes more sense for both teams.
  11. We don't know anything about the level of honesty between Breslow and Bregman. But just off the top of my head, if I were going to trust Boras or Breslow, it's going to be Breslow. That said, neither side has an obligation to be honest with their numbers. If Boras said the Cubs were offering $165M, without mentioning any deferrals, that's his job.
  12. Most of that damage was in 2023. In fact, his defense was Devers-esque in his first 4 seasons (-45 in ~2950 IPs). His last two seasons were -0- and -2. I don't see him very often, so I don't have a feel for whether or not that's accurate, but the numbers look better.
  13. I think a fair amount of said that you need to let these things play out. I had Alonso going to the RS even if i didn't like him all that much. I liked Bregman a lot more, but like I said, so long as the RS were willing to spend the $32M+ they offered Bregman, to someone else, the level of our improvement was going to be about the same.
  14. I'm not in love with the BTV Marte valuation. Duran had a higher bWAR last year, over the past two years, and almost the same over the past three years. If he repeats his 4.7 for 3 years, that's 14.1 bWAR, for maybe $52M. Even if Marte does not decline at age 32-34, he gives us 13.6 for $47M. That's all good, especially since he fits so well. But then we are on the hook for $44M/2 for ages 35-36, with a player option for $11.5M at age 37. In a vacuum, I'd rather have Duran than Marte. I can deal, but wouldn't add in anything extra.
  15. Like I said, I don't blame fans for complaining about the spending. But 90% of the posts had a pro-script "but the RS won't do it because JH is too cheap".
  16. I think I like Ceddanne as much as anyone, and certainly love watching his glove. But all three of those guys should be on the table. If you trade Ceddanne, then Duran slides over and RA plays LF. If you trade Duran, RA plays LF. If you trade Abreu, then RA plays RF. I think Duran is the best trade target of the three, but we should be looking at the best overall trade value for any of those guys. Different teams will have different assessment and different needs.
  17. #57 in IPs last year. Over four years, he is #34 in GS and #33 in IPs. Depending on the half-full thing, he has only 762 IPs for his career. Cease has 1,015 IPs and Valdez has 1,081.
  18. With Wildman Craig Breslow landing Suarez, I'd be far more willing to trade Bello. There is a reasonable chance that a combination of Sandoval, Oviedo, Early or Tolle could provide value similar to Bello. While it feels like Bello should get slightly more than Paredes, I think it's pretty close, and the fit is great.
  19. There's no doubt in my mind that Duran is more valuable. My only point of contention would be by how much. I'm not sure how they develop the value side, but if it is based on WAR, then Duran is under-valued. But if Duran is worth 45.9, then Paredes is worth an easy 30. Just on my calc sheet, Paredes is a 3.4 player * 2, * $9M, less $25M salary, or $36M.
  20. But I thought he didn't communicate well?
  21. So I just got back from lunch with my lovely spouse, went for a very nice 5-mile walk thru the woods, only to find that Breslow is now the most free-wheeling spendiest GM in Red Sox history.
  22. It was worse, far, far worse. I never thought Betts was staying, but one could argue that either way. And I understood getting rid of Price and getting under the cap. But Lester was an insult. He said that they would have to 'tear this jersey off my back', and they did. He supposedly wanted the Homer Bailey contract, which he certainly deserved. Does anyone remember the poster that said Lester was a #5 SP, while he was still with the Red Sox?
  23. I wouldn't trade Campbell, unless he was part of a package for a really good pitching prospect or a 2B/3B with some control. One year of Hoerner is something we could regret for the next 9 years.
  24. And there is the #2 that some of wanted. At least we'll have at least 2-3 days off from 'JH is cheap'. Now acquire one more Suarez and the off-season is over.
