He's awful on the basepaths, so that matters if hes up there looking for a walk. His contributions towards winning when hes on first base are obvs less than if its Eaton or Hammy standing at 1b. The dudes who should be looking to walk should be #7,8,9 hitters and dudes who can fly. Also, if Casas is swinging more , hes also putting the ball in play earlier in the count, so we dont even get to the k or bb, both of which are disappointing outcomes for him. Coming up, he was billed as mr strike zone. mr knows the strike zone better than the umpire. But if hes not looking to swing, it does nothing for me. I dont want him clogging the basepaths. If hes looking to swing and keyholing = great! He should be up there looking for his pitch. One he can drive. So if his eye is helping him not swing on tricky sinkers = great. Go 0-1 if its a well executed sinker. Def. But the point needs to be because thats not the most driveable pitch you are going to see. He should be hunting and using his good eye to hunt. Not using his eye to draw walks. Its a mindset more than anything. When Im not seeing the ball well in the show I take more walks. Cuz im trying to max my freebies. But when Im on fire, Im smoking the gap or putting it over the ball hitter after hitter. And im taking pitches because i know im going to murder one, and im choosing to pass on that pitch because i think the next one is going to be more murderable. Im using pitch recognition, but Im hunting. And if I have a good hitter up there, and im on fire, im disappointed with a walk. CONFIDENCE!!!! A walk is a disappointing at-bat for casas. This is a mindset he needs to develop.

I have 0 issue with Casas personality. My issues are related to his speed, athleticism and approach at the plate. You can be too patient , and he is.

Same guy pat was also pants'd by future NFL cornerback will blackmon at hendricken high school My friend sully played basketball at hendricken with mazzula. But Im sure I know somebody who knows them because its RI I do have a mutual friend with noel acciari (also hendricken) who plays in nhl but they met at providence college.

Weirdest thing about this....You bring up Jesuit High School because it has a lot of alums that have gone on to have great success in pro-sports, when I was talking about a High School near me that has crazy success in getting players/coaches to pros. David Adelman (jesuit) replaced Malone who also went to hendricken, and i almost edited my mazzula comment to also include a reference to malone. Crazy! So I mention one high school (Hendricken) produced 2 NBA head coaches! Crazy. You point out a different HS across the country (Jesuit) produced 2 NBA head coaches (also crazy, props). And one of those coaches happened to be a direct replacement for one of the Hendricken alums as Denver Head Coach. I didnt go to Hendricken. Its Catholic and all boys. Im Jewish and would never let parents send me to all boys when i was in HS (not like they would have sent me there). But its 10 mins away from cranston where im born , raised, and currently live I did do drivers ed in hendricken and drive by it at least once a week. Its not like they cant make him face LHP in practice. And even if they start the sesaon with him on the bench against LHP, doesnt mean it will end up that way. They may want to give him rest early season because hes a guy coming off injury himself. Mayer might start 2026 in a platoon. But it wont be like an abreu situation where he'll stay stuck there.

2 of the top 12 FA's . neither of which are in the top 4, of free agents that are not pitchers or outfielders for your top 2 offensive positions is not a good argument for rolling forward casas and masa.

And much more importantly to me, one Hendricken High School alumni Hendricken HS in warwick , RI about 10 mins from where i sit right now. Baldelli went there also.

we had an 8m option on him, we declined it prob because we wanted to pursue 7.6 in arb for him and he wanted to pursue 8m in arb , and so we figured just go through arb because worse case he gets the same. The risk is pissing him off, but we dont even have to worry about that because we avoided arb. Ask the bruins about how touchy arb can be. Sometimes relationships are forever damaged, but no arb here.

Suarez is a about the age when Justin Turner couldnt play 3b everyday anymore, and its a concern for me. I dlive with it, dont get me wrong.....but ball comes at you fast in hot corner and you have to be twitchy with good reaction time and you gotta be able to hit the dirt (and then get up) Mid 30s, it starts becoming a bit much for the aging body. I also dont trust Suarez bat to not regress after a career year in his mid 30s. But i understand that bregman plus one of shcwarber and alonso is asking a lot. I dont hate the trade for Marte idea (mayer would go to third), but hes gotta be available. And if we are trying for him, its not like we couldnt trade for a diff infielder. Prob is thats less chips to trade for a pitcher.

I dont mind Mayer at SS or 3b but I dont love him at 2b because we have a lot of bigger infielders, but we have a lot of quicker ones (even story). And Mayer is a big boy. We have more guys who can make a diving play at 2b than we have guys who have the arm for third. Even if we bring back breg, i prob slide story to 2b. Feel like Mayers size is wasted at 2b.

Mayer is almost a lock to be one of the internal dudes because he's cheap, 6'3, has plenty of arm for left side of IF, mobility for second, and a solid hitting floor. We dont know the hitting ceiling, but know the floor. I think its unreasonable to expect Mayer to be terrible with the bat, he'll contribute something offensively.

And you can say that my bias towards schwarber because hes worn the uniform before and we should not have let him go in the first place (in hindsight) and he gave us fun moments last time he was here - if you think thats adding some bias... You probs right

Correct on the locks (5 starting bats). For the other 4, theres 2 to be filled internally and 2 externally (to me) Mayer is most likely (considerably) to nab one of those internal openings. Our only disagreement is I really want Schwarber and im not going to let yoshida be the reason why i give alonso 200m when i could have schwarber at closer to 100m. If those contracts meet in the middle (they both get 150m) - im more okay with going alonso over schwarber Im not paying alonso 2x when hes not as good of a hitter because he plays a bad 1b. Are you sure schwarber cant be as good at first?

18m x 2 yrs = 36m shwarber will get 110m, alonso will get 160m. ALonso is an inferior hitter. Spending an extra 50m to get an inferior hitter so we can keep masa at DH due to his contract feels like "chasing bad money with good money" If alonso/schwarber expected contracts at close, that could alter things for me. But I dont want to pay 2x for alonso when we can get schwarber at half the cost because "DH is locked down" Id rather just teach masa first base. I know hes not the ideal body for it, but the difference between alonso and masa at 1b from a defensive runs saved, I dont think its a deal breaker. Sure Alonsos reach going to create a couple outs but yoshida might make a few plays that alonso cant once he has some practice.

I teach him how to play 1b and think (unfortunately) Casas is back in May and hurt by June. Masa/Romy are your 1b platoon.

Give me an elite bat at 3-4 years who is a DH over guys who are better suited to be DHs but are forced into the field, who dont have elite bats, at 6-7 years.

This is why I want schwarber Bregman - will get more money and years because he plays defense, but he never really looked healthy to me last year, outside of the beginning and certainly never looked "spry". The Bregman that ended last year felt like an old man and we're talking 6 years at big money? Declining defense, declining durability, solid bat Alonso - I think will get 6-7 years like Bregman , again because he plays 1b - but not well. And yes, sorry, I do think that Masa would be better (defensively). Thats a low bar. Aging, the fact that he plays a bad 1b (anybody can play a bad 1b) means nothing to me, solid bat Schwarber - considerably better bat than the above 2. Because he doesnt play defense (but would prob be just as good as ALonso if he did and Breg is prob a 1b 10% into his next contract lol) - I think thats going to suppress his value and keep him at 3-4 years. I see him as reasonable because I think other GMs are foolishly scared off by the DH.
