The red sox have an outstanding offer to bregman that pushes them above 264. If he says yes, i dont think we'll trade with the intention of getting under 264. If we like Lodolo more than duran, and that so happens to get us under the number thats one thing. But the 264 is barely a number. If you go over 244m thats a big deal, so it makes sense as number you want to circle because if you go over it , your tax for going over it again next year is higher. 284 is a nubmer because if you go over it, your draft picks move back. 264 does nothing. The difference in tax between 270 and 263 is very very very little. I dont think they can sign Bregman and stay under 264 for tax purposes. I think theyll be deferrals but not enough to get the cbt number THAT low. I think if bregman says yes, we'll be over 264. And JH already approved it, thats why there is an offer in bregmans hand. Theres only like 20m before 264. If the AAV of the outstanding offer to bregman was 20m (even net of deferrals) nobody would be calling it "aggressive" Right now, whether or not the sox go over 264 is up to bregman (my opinion) because if he says yes, i think we'll be over and stay over. Now to some of your other points....If lets say the phills sign Bo Bichette right now and then say we'll give Bohm away for free (like a prospect nobody has ever heard of). Then maybe we pull our offer for Breg and take Bohm for a non-prospect , prospect. Maybe the sox decide that if another option emerges like Bohm, theyd rather than than restricting future spending. Im going to assume that our pitching coaches at the major league level are better than our pitching coaches at the minor league level. If he needs to tweak his changeup grip, or release point or any of that stuff, lets have him work with our best coaches to do it. Pitchers work in new pitches every year, sometimes between starts. Tolle needs to establish his identity but I think its more likely to happen at the major league level. I say, give him the chance to win the job.

I dont know what you mean by you dont think we'll pay bregman more than other teams will offer, we dont know what other teams have offered. When both were options (Bregman, Marte) of course theres a point of negotiation with either , where you start focusing on the other side....SO for example Bregman laughs in your fact at 170 (not saying he did or would) you start focusing with Arizona for Marte, Arizona demands Roman Anthony or nothing, you start focusing on Bregman (and other options).....I get all that. So sure, there is always a point where you start looking for alternatives. Obvs new news changes things - but would I rather sign Bregman or trade for Marte. It depends on the cost for both. Id rather trade Duran and Harrison than sign Bregman for 200m But Id rather sign Bregman for $150m than trade Roman for Marte And I know Im not using realistic, but the point remains.

And if story gets hurt? WHile all 4 OF'ers are playing great? They arent going to bench a hot player. Theyll shuffle.

The real world is gray with an infinite number of ever-changing variables. Everything is case by case. Rigidity is for boomers. If you are unwilling to be flexible/creative/negotiate/think-outside-the-box/reconsider when uphill factors change (e.g. we missed out on player x, we are now willing to up our offer to player y)...you are being too rigid to your own detriment Nothing happens in a vacuum. The walk point on Bregman obvious changes as alternatives come off the board. Now I do agree that just 1m more, in perpetuity, can be a trap. But that doesnt mean that you view negotiations with a black/white/simple lens because if you are not willing to get creative, you are just not using everything available to you.

I think there are only three players on this team who will be full time at a specific position (except when on bench) - Abreu, Nav, story Cedanne will play infield sparingly, Duran will play some outfield, some dh. If Nav is playing hes at C, if Abreu is playing hes at RF. If STory is playing he is at SS (personally, I would play cedanne at ss more than most) but I dont expect them too. But cedanne will play a little 2b here and there. They will rotate through the DH spot (Anthony, Duran, Romy, Yoshida) I wouldnt consider Yoshida a backup DH, I would consider him part of a DH committee, but I do agree that unless hes hitting gappers in ST, its hard to justify carrying that on the 26 over a second platoon bat. If Yoshida makes the team and his hitting gappers, fine. If hes rolling over everything, and a couple singles are getting through the infield and thats the extent of his contributions - but he stays with the major league team - then we'll (justifiably) complain that we shoulda kept Refsnyder.

Bring us up to about 275ish mil, thats about where i think our payroll will be. Now if bregman says no, and signs with toronto/arizona/cubs (anyone), and the red sox turn around and trade early,duran,philips for Marte, and you come on here saying, I think this is what i would have preferred and i therefore think its a blessing in disguise that bregman said no.....I would prob like the post. But right now, the red sox payroll stands at 245m, and they have an "aggressive" offer to Bregman. I assure you "aggressive" is more than 25m/yr, so...

Regarding this: an aggressive offer is on the table. What do you think that means? Its not 20m/yr. So if Bregman, right now, calls Bres and says "yes" the payroll at that point in time , will be as high as I think it should. Our current payroll + pending offer is quite high. I think where we disagree is what that outstanding offer for Bregman is. I doubt its under 135m.
