Red Sox 2025 Season Review/Offseason Preview Thread
drewski6 replied to Brandon Glick's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Depends what you mean by "BIG" but I did note that you said "get" and not "sign" If we are including trading, which I feel like you are allowing me to because you said "get" and if "BIG" can be one OPS north of .850 and another one north of .800 (projected) that plus a #2 (if we can include a high end #3) - I would say 40% If you mean 2 elite bats and a top 20 pitcher, 15% -

For sure, return package and trade value matters a lot, and Im not sold BTV is always accurate (but I dont mind when people use it as a resource) -

Top 5 payroll, top 3 offense (or be trying to improve it), a lot of it is more effort than results for me. Certainly not rolling over Verdugo year after year becuase "but I wubbbbb him", certainly not refusing to sign elite hitters when you have 0 because you cant accept that you made a bad investment on yoshida. Certainly not trying to fill every hole with bounceback candidates. Since we cut back on payroll (and its not just payroll its also effort): third / 5(2019) last / 5 (2020) second / 5 (2021) last / 5 (2022) last / 5 (2023 Third / 5 (2024) Third / 5 (2025) This is since theyve started being fine with just having mediocre players like Verdugo and Yoshida and why woudl we need Schwarber, weve got Yoshida and Casas! Thats what youve been doing, third and last place finishes are what you are getting. THe era of complacency! Fix it and sign Schwarber or get boo'd forever. -
But we'll have like 7 pitchers in the minors on our 40 man lol. WE can rotate through them, haha I know its not happening, theres a reason why there isnt one 5 man bench in baseball. They should consider it in playoffs though when teams pinch run more and theres more days off to help pitcher recovery. When I play through a season in the show, you def feel it when you go one less pitcher. Pitchers are always tired. Im not actually questioning it.

A Realistic Look at the 2026 Red Sox: Part I

I agree. Breslow cant handle criticism. And Devers shouldnt have called him out like that and Devers was being a defiant jerk himself, but the pattern is there with Breslow as well. Im not surprised they couldnt coexist. -

There was a point when I wanted to trade him, but by last year I had flipped and was against it. Right now, Im not particularly for it or against it. -

There must be a reason because literally nobody does it, but with Worcester so close..... I really dont understand why not carry a 5 man bench (one less arm) and just use Worcester for your pitching depth so you dont wear out your farm. But nobody does it. Platoon guys are in though, and teams are doing it more. Guys who havent caught in years are being asked to catch again because platoon bats are more en vogue than defense from your backup C. Read: Give wongs roster spot to Refsnyder, and just have whoever catch 30% of the time when Nav needs a day off. Not saying I would do this, but tams are starting to.

A Realistic Look at the 2026 Red Sox: Part I
drewski6 replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
whispers: signing extensions is done to save money down the road (lol) Its almost like: look at me, Im not cheap! I spend! I bought this coupon book! But my original point was about Breslow because the trade was more out of left field then people seem to remember. They werent fighting with him about position at the time. It was all settled, Devers was raking, and things were looking up. We were winning. Then the trade was out of nowhere. And honestly, and I know Im in the minority here, but I think the trade was done because Breslow will trade you if you dont do what Breslow tells you! Rather than JH. I do think JH approved it and part of that was because he didnt hate getting out of the contract. But I think Breslow was the driving force for reasons that were not exclusively financial. Nor exclusively to help the team. I think Breslow had a hair across his ass and traded Breslow for selfish reasons. Ive seen Breslow sit there defiantly with awful body language like a child and this isnt his first clash. -

I was answering a question, I have no issue with him suggesting it. I wasnt as on board with a Duran trade last year, but Im open to it now. I still feel like its not as high on my personal list. For example, Im not sure I wouldnt trade Cedanne instead. Understand the d gives a high floor and patrolling CF helps, but Im not sure that contributes more to winning than say an average defensive CF who hits better. But Alex has every right to suggest it. And he usually makes good points. -

Keep in mind things were pretty smoothed over at the time of the trade and we were on a winning streak, and Devers was red hot. It had to be done, maybe because of grudges. -

They eventually had a sit down meeting with Cora present (as well as Breslow) but heels were dug in and a lot of damage had been done by then. -

Just keep in mind that things were not handled as well as they should have been from the RS side either, based on their own admissions. WE have a GM who holds grudges and doesnt communicate well, and that played a part. I do agree most of the blame goes to Devers because he just wasnt living in the current landscape which is positions are fluid and versatility gets used. -

Not sure if he leads in number of specific proposals, but Alex Mays may lead in terms of suggesting a Duran trade. -

We dont have a single player that was a top 50 hitter in baseball last year. Not one. Passing on the number 6 hitter in baseball because of a 2 yr commitment to an underachieving player is small market operations. It would essentially be passing on a hitter that transforms our entire lineup to suck any juice out of a bad investment. I dont hate Yoshida, but he simply shouldnt get in the way here. Otherwise, we are letting ownership and GMs just continue with what they've been "we cant add until we shed" and this approach has led to more last place finishes than playoff series wins in recent years. When you dont have a top 50 hitter in baseball, and a top 10 hitter is sitting there in free agency, thats all the fit you need. RA + schwarber + one more solid bat hides a lot of offensive holes and we'll surely have at least a couple. -

Thats surprising to me, that you werent on board. Naylor has been a great get for Seattle, who is showing a willingness to put pieces around JROD and Cal. Better than Ty France 4 years in a row. -

I could even be okay with that if the other 4 are very good hitters. But if they are cedanne and mayer and story and abreu, thats not good enoug hto overcome teh noodlebat 5 that youve presented. You are the man, btw. I enjoy your takes. -

yes, in all cases. Theres plenty of people who nobody expected to leave and did. Even so, theres a difference between going after Schwarber and failing to convince him and losing out than just being okay with a lineup where nobody has an. 850 OPS. Its the mindset. When do we get to say enough with the mediocrity? -

Understand none of us (even collectively) hold a ton of power here. I get that. But watching the team not go after elite talent despite not winnning a playoff series in 6 years is worthy of being frustrated. And but we have 36m committed to yoshida is a lousy excuse. Play yoshida in the field if you cant waste that money. But get dangerous hitters. I assure you yoshida isnt scaring anybody. And a red sox lineup that has him as a top 4 hitter isnt scaring anybody. Yoshida is fine as a guy hitting 6th or 7th in your lineup. Id be fine with him at DH if we had a very good hitting 1 - 5. And if we dont have that, we should be trying to get it. NOt looking at all our players through an overly optimistic lens because breslow and henry have better things to do with their weekend than fix our offense. -

campbell was getting reps in the outfield, almost from the beginning. It depends on what snapshot in time you are looking at because the plan changed when Devers stopped healing. Campbell wasnt chosen because he was a 2b or an outfielder, he was chosen because he was a 2b AND an OF'er and defensive versatility helps you get on the field. Remember in teh beginning Campbell was getting run in teh of and in the inf , as was cedanne. They firgured, at least at one point, because he could cover so many positions (campbell) they could find enough at bats for him vs roman and mayer would be on teh bench too much cuz they play outfield or infield (not both) and we viewed both infield and outfield as crowded at the time. This changed when they gave up on devers playing the field. But that was late april. Also Campbell being right handed counted a lot. And favoritism. REmember when they told campbell he made the team, tek was wearing a ga tech hat and hes like ga tech bros!! -

Getting Marte would count for a lot. If that happens, I will find you and high five you. But Im not super optimistic hes actually available, and Schwarber is just sitting there. Yoshida isnt useless but if Marte isnt available, we shouldnt let his 36m stop us from getting the best bat available when we need said bat. Put Masa in the OF if you have to , I dont care. But we simply cannot be fine with not adding very good hitting. Well we could be, but we'd be letting them off the hook.
