    Wins and losses are so out of favor. Poor Garrett Crochet has around 2.00 ERA but a 4-4 W/L record. He couldve had that record with a 4.00 ERA or more. And it's not necessarily from poor offense, it's this new analytics way of must replace starting pitcher at a certain time regardless of circumstances. Humans like incentive and a feeling of purpose. It makes them play better. Of course geeks don't have a stat for that. To them players are merely a gear for the machine that when wore out, just replace.

    I actually don't doubt he had an "epiphany," of sorts. He watched Moneyball and thought "ahah, talent doesnt matter!!"

    Got to admit, for Cora to be not only let in mlb but actually a manager is strange considering how they treated Pete Rose.

    I didn't know that about Cora wanting Devers to be 3rd. In terms of having a smooth clubhouse, that may have been better. Still have some problems with his coaching style though.

    I think for this team, it's a big reason. I'm not anti-analytics but it sounds like they think that just because it worked for them in the past, anything before it, like fundamentals, small ball, gut feelings etc. was a hundred years of mistaken thinking.

    When I think of the type of manager I want for the Red Sox, Bruce Boche is the first to come to mind.

    You are right because they said so much. Ideally they shouldn't have said that at all and should've talked to Devers about going to 1st as they were about to sign Bregman, or before. Did they not because 1st was supposed to be saved for Casas? Thats no good. They should've used the energy JH used flying to KC to talk to Devers, at the beginning of the year, when they signed someone to take his place.

    I think most of our roster have been good, especially starting the season. Casas was really the only one that never had a good period. Narvaez, Crochet, Buelher, Chapman, have all been good. Bregman has been solid throughout, except for now obviously. Devers got it going after actually being historically bad. Duran is getting better. Story and Campbell started good but have trailed off. Abreu was the best hitter in baseball for a time. The K's and not hitting with runners in scoring position, must be the from the approach told to them from manager and front office. That makes sense to me considering their numbers in other areas.

    Actually I think it's philosophy and poor roster management. The whole Bregman/Devers thing was handled very poorly, and I don't think Devers is the main culprit. That itself is the cause of not having a replacement for Casas, and Yoshida being stranded in no mans land. I can't prove it but I also think all the K's are because of a batting philosophy that is anti-contact, pro-long ball. The worse to me though is the pitch count philosophy on starting pitchers. Taking pitchers out that are doing fine, with pitch counts under 100, makes me think that the offense has to not only overcome difficult pitching but moves by their own manager that lack common sense.

    Just because Cora deems the pitchers unable to pitch 6-7 innings doesnt mean it's true. He pulls them many times with having just a little trouble but still getting out of the inning and under 90 pitches. Its at those times that the bullpen usually stinks it up and the offense follows suit. Houck was having a great game against Toronto but Cora pulled him after 85 pitches and the bullpen gave it up. They were probably wondering why they were there in the first place. Houck stank after that. He just did it to Crochet, game before today. Cora is over managing, not using common sense. He's saving his pitchers arms for the postseason but is under 500.

    I say it is philosophy, not talent that is the problem.

    Its a clear message that he's not interested in winning the game, so why should the team try?

    When will there be a sense of urgency to win close low scoring games? I think Cora uses the bullpen to purposely lose games so his pitchers wont have to pitch extra innings. Its all a part of the master plan. Bah ha ha ha ha. Cue lightning and thunder.

    I guess I'm saying we would also pay his contract because right now we are just paying him and getting nothing in return. I wasn't being completely serious but as things are going, it may be the only alternative.

    Ok but even with those figures, the lowest innings eating pitcher of a blow out is better than a non-existent batter.

    It was a complete cluster *beep* from the very beginning. Once they knew they were going to get Bregman, they should've immediately called Devers and offered him 1st. Yes we had Casas at the time but the FO, knowing Devers wants to play on the field, should've done it as a gesture of goodwill, and loyalty. Casas would've gotten over playing DH and if not, oh well. They literally chose rookie Casas over veteran Devers. Its just bad. I also remember some talk of Bregman playing 2nd or SS when they first signed him. Devers might have never have wanted it but I don't think he was asked or we would have heard about it. And to top it off, it unnecessarily leaves Yoshida in limbo.

    Well if this is just a hiccup and we keep up the momentum we've been building, then ok but this is a repeating pattern. It seems like the bullpen does fine unless they replace a starting pitcher that doesnt need it. No you don't want Crochet's arm to be overused, but he's built like a more muscular Randy Johnson and could probably handle it more than most. Maybe he should pitch to contact more. Pitchers today are pitching less but getting injured more. Huh? Yes because they're throwing harder, so they should stop doing that. Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer threw much slower than the average pitchers back then and they were very effective.

    Cora is purposely losing us games. He did this the last time we got some momentum going by subbing Houck when he was having his best start against Toronto. Houck had an 86 pitch count. What is it with Cora not wanting pitchers to be too succesful. It doesnt take a genius to understand that when a pitcher has your number, the offense would feel revitalized when they take him out of there, especially knowing there is a pattern of success of it happening so many times. Sounds like Ramon Vasquez would fill in nicely.

    Yes, both points, point to them not believing in contact, but theres so many more ways to score with someone on 3rd with less than 2 outs than swinging for the fences, and that needs to be practiced. I also like contact pitchers. We have a good defense, its just that we are feeling the pressure which is causing errors. If we could've driven home some of these base runners we could have won some of these games and there wouldn't be as much pressure. We are last or close to last in scoring with runners in scoring position and productive outs.

    Yes and it's not like your 1st baseman getting hurt is some unbelievable bad luck no one could ever predict. It really sounds like not everyone is on the same page.

    To get Yoshida in the line-up I imagine. That they didn't offer 1st base to Devers in the first place and put Casas as DH, is a case of misplaced loyalty in my view.

    I've got to give props to Duran too. Everytime the Sox get a little something going, its usually instigated by Duran but its not being sustained. So far, to me the fulcrum of the season up to this point is still the series against Toronto. Thats when we truly lost games when we didn't have to and it kicked any momentum we had straight in the balls. Excuse my language.
