  1. By then, probably not. I keep planting apple trees in my yard, but within two or three years they opt out.
  2. Alex Speier, a real reporter, had it first. So he's either being used by Boras to panic the other finalists or by the Red Sox, who own the Globe and want fans to know they never gave up. If Soto's camp does agree to one more meeting, I wouldn't mind Theo sitting in for John Henry. If Epstein can seal the deal, his name goes on my lawn sign in 2028...
  3. I predict someone else will predict someone else will give him more.
  4. Someone was blind scouting Yoshida... at least near-sighted. "I know we're sitting behind the backstop, but from here, it looks... he is -- he's pumping iron in the dugout! Masa's throwing around dumbbells like they're inflated with air! Get Boras on the phone now."
  5. The one-year contract to Chapman to me means they're just trying to cross another bridge year. Not that I want a garage-shooting reliever for multiple seasons -- but where's the investment in pieces needed to complete that core of sustained annual contenders? Wait til next week? And for those who say the Red Sox never beat the Yankees in the bidding for top talent, remember Dice K -- the Yamamoto Sasaki of his day. And then the most-hyped amateur prospect from Cuba, Yoan Moncada... The Sox outbid the Yanks for both, and each helped win World Series (in their own ways). Still can't see the pinstripers letting Soto go to Beantown. They need him more than we do... in the very least, so he's not on our side.
  6. I would say rots in the second half of every season this decade. Red Sox bullpens in the 2020s go like this: a few guys have pretty good first halves, some are even borderline All-Stars... then the utterly embarrassingly-shallow starting rotation gets hurt, whoever's not on the IL can't go five frames, and all the relievers get burned out until their rag arms blow saves in every inning -- even when they're openers -- so notin can complain about blown saves being a meaningful stat, all while we're watching them blow another summer shot at making the playoffs.
  7. The bullpen still rots: replacing old, past-their-prime men looking for retirement with old, rehabbing men looking for second, third or eighth-chances.
  8. A first baseman should have good hands, nimble feet, and an accurate throwing arm -- all basic tools for a professional baseball player. But let's be honest: Raffy has had issues with all three while trying to play third base. That doesn't mean -- with enough practice reps (for a guy set for life, but with enough pride to want to earn it) -- that Devers can't improve and become an acceptable first sacker. Just remember, the transition isn't always smooth. Vlad Jr. definitely isn't, and Miggy was pretty bad over there. Ernie Banks was a Gold Glove shortstop, before he led the NL in range factor his first four seasons as a first baseman. Yaz was ok, but got moved back to the outfield in his late-30s, where he was better. Youk made himself a good first baseman -- but he didn't lead the league in Es for seven years at third like Raffy before that. Boggs played a lot of first as a rookie, then made himself a good third baseman. Bagwell was an All-Star soccer player in high school, so was athletically skilled enough to move around. The current Red Sox sure have plenty of future DHs...
  9. Every time I see one of those commercials I want to parlay a quintana or at least a manaea. But I don't want to get banned for life... .... although when MLB is officially owned by FanDuel in a few years, maybe they'll give me a pardon. Or deport me from deportes.
  10. We are. The loyal diehard fans who fund their favorite teams deserve to have the clubs pay and establish new market prices for top talent.
  11. For decades the Red Sox didn't win it all, but fans always felt the team would try by identifying areas of need and upgrading every offseason. But since the Bloom Era began -- when the org wouldn't pay Mookie Betts half of what they're offering a worse player this winter -- the plan has shifted to just doing what they can to get by: stuff the jerseys with bodies, send them out on the diamond, and field a nine so they can play the games and sell tickets. Fans aren't fools, and after five years of this crap will only believe again if and when Breslow and Co. actually UPGRADE -- and not slide sideways (cough, Wilson, cough Chapman) -- in the starting rotation, in the bullpen, in the batting order, and on defense.
  12. How hard is this? Chapman abused a woman. Bregman abused the rules so he could beat the Yankees and Dodgers.
  13. If the Sox miss out on Soto -- and right now, every GM, agent and reporter in the industry predicts they will -- but Pivetta and O'Neill get re-upped at longer and larger contracts, and Jansen/Martin morph into Chapman/Hendriks, Sam Kennedy will still say, "Look, we spent -- compared to last year..." And he'll keep a straight face.
  14. The best Mets' hitter ever is Mookie. Networks have been showing just one of his at bats for the past 40 years. Over and over again. Again and again and again. Even though the Red Sox have won four World Series since then, and the Mets zero. As in nothing. None. Zilch. Cipher.
  15. And they signed him for one year? Are we really still going year to year, just trying to get through another season before we actually go for it? I thought, I mean I was told (by the president-derelict) we won't be just fighting for a wild card next year... but a division title!
  16. Do we really need a domestic violence lefty, who last year also tied Jarren Duran for two-game vocabulary suspensions? But just to get ready, I watched an entire youtube of game-tying or game-losing home runs given up by Chapman, including 7,516 on sliders after swings and misses at 100 mph heaters. Good thing his new pitching coach prefers breaking balls.
  17. John Henry's accountants have it calculated down to a final offer that Cohen will top at the last minute that will make Soto the highest-paid ballplayer ever, a Met forever, and save the Red Sox $666 million dollars.
  18. Get more start makers and not more start missers.
  19. Higgy's gone, signed by Rangers... stealthily, players being eliminated from posters' suggested rosters. Happens every winter... (from no other club's fan forum): "And let's add a lefty reliever from the Reds' bullpen; Wilson's only gonna be 37 next summer. His WAR is a WBR, only 1/5th of a win below a replacement player."
  20. I admit I will be blown away if Soto signs with Boston. And let me say it first: if it happens, Rafael Devers will be so happy -- even if he moves to first base -- he'll have a career year with the bat. But adding Soto and only one new starting pitcher (like some of the projections here) might boost the Red Sox to a wild card, but it's not enough to win a ring. More potential rookies in the starting line-up will be exciting, but Boston still needs to add at least two established guys each to both the rotation and the bullpen to make it real. The trap every fan falls for every offseason is expecting all returning players to be at least as good as they were the previous year -- and that's never the case, because of regression, opponents' books exploiting weaknesses, and certainly injuries. So please add multiple starting pitchers, beyond a Fried or Crochet; there are plenty of #2s available out there to stockpile.
  21. Cohen said he's just going to buy it. And he won't be outbid -- not by Cuba, the USSR, the Sam F Kennedys, no one.
  22. I asked Uncle AI, why Caroline, and he replied instantly: it's a highly singable, upbeat song that encourages audience participation I also wondered why Red Sox fans are so skeptical. He gave me a list (with bullets; of course, this is America): Spending limits Years of self-imposed spending limits have led to poor performance on the field and declining interest in the team. Unfounded promises Fans are skeptical of promises made by club officials, such as "full throttle". Lack of investment Fans feel that the team has not invested enough in the roster. History Some fans feel that the team, its fans, and the city have distorted or overlooked history, such as the Jackie Robinson tryout
  23. But... the Fenway Experience -- what's the next blasphemy here, an article to ban "Sweet Caroline" ? O-O-Nooo
  24. Once the Soto rumors are officially rumors, I swear to give John Henry more money... at least a dollar so I can read about the rumors on Boston.com for the next six months.
  25. Should find out soon if it was Soto news or Soto ruse... or Sox got Soto used.
