  1. It's Friday but I agree, I much rather see Holt hitting than Kinsler.
  2. Porcello looking pretty sharp with good ball movement, pitching the edges but can't get a marginal call or two. If this was a playoff game his pitch count would be limiting him to 5+ innings.
  3. With Vazquez's return and Swihart's help, I would have thought Leon would get refreshed but he probably needs 2 weeks in Hawaii for that to happen.
  4. Opposing teams don't need to shift for Sandy, just have the catcher move his glove around for the pitcher to hit. Not sure what it is because he has delivered hits in the past but he truly looks clueless right now. Not even in the same vicinity as the ball crossing the plate. I'm sure Cora will carry vazquez and Swihart and pinch hit early if needed for Sandy.
  5. More Moreland gets us up firther. Nunez looks fully baked now with the 1B collision.
  6. A first inning run, how innovative. Gotta love Brock Holt.
  7. Not so worried about getting lit up, but durability and depth. Can he get 6+ innings and 2 starts, if needed, in the ALDS. Also so glad to see that Nate Eovaldi has magically become the answer to all problems.
  8. I will offer that the pitchers used over the last few games have not made Cora satisfied with his pitching plans, and when given a chance to solidify a post season role, several have spit the bit. The W-L of the game may not matter in the big picture but the individual performances of fringe players is the game within the game and it doesn't look great.
  9. An astute observation, but maybe include Bogaerts too. The other 6 hitters are sub .265 guys with modest power. The catchers cannot hit their weight, and maybe not the 3B man either. Moreland has hit about .200 in the second half. It's a challenge when your 2 utility guys, Holt and Nunez, represent the biggest threats. Maybe Pearce gives a pitcher some concern but not on a consistent basis.
  10. First and third, no one out and the 3-4-5 hitters deliver two K's and a shallow flyball. Typical Sox first inning.
  11. I know the stats generally are saying otherwise, but can't get away from the feeling that JDM is not hitting near as well lately with men on base. He was lethal pre A-S break and has racked up big numbers but just not seeing him as the gamewrecker right now
  12. And the run scores from the error on a 2 out, 2 strike count as usual. Where was Beni playing on that AB by Stanton, took awhile to get to the ball but with Gradner running , Beni's weak arm wasn't getting him.
  13. Let's allow the short or long post season play out to see who performs and who doesn't, then evaluate the payroll. Anything less than a WS appearance will be seen as a failure and could influence JH's checkbook availability. If the Sox drop early again in the ALDS, the pressure will be on DD to remake the pitching staff some how or other. If they win the WS, all pressure is off and you can let guys like Kimbrel take his best offer and move on. My theory is that if I can't win with these guys, then I need different guys. The current BP with its crowd of medium level pitchers does make for some trade possibilities. Keep in mind of the current 19 active pitchers on the 40 man roster , the Sox will open 2019 with only 13 pitching for them.
  14. And here's a suggestion to Cora. Why not just challenge your team, with an A lineup on the field, to beat these MF's just once to see if you can do it ? This coasting into the playoffs really sucks. Your 107 wins will soon be history.
  15. After the ALDS, it will be interesting to see the discussion on the value or even existence of "clutch", momentum, motivation or any other psychological interpretations of why some players and teams are winners, and some just never get there. Will winning too early by too much and Cora's rest programs help or disrupt the concept of knowing your place on the team or in the lineup ? Meanwhile , the guys are stinking up the current game between Johnson and Cuevas, neither of whom are likely to be in unis for the ALDS.
  16. Here's a suggestion to the boys--- Either figure Happ out or else be ready to see him twice in a 5 game win or go home series.
  17. Consistently one of the worst in the league. Any reason that some of the worst of the worst are affirmative action placements ?
  18. 2 out, 2 strike pitching is why Brian Johnson cannot be of much value in the post season. he made a good contribution during the season but just doesn't have the stuff to shut another team down. The game may be meaningless to the Sox, but this series will show the holes we have , if any.
  19. Just get him out of Anaheim so he can play in an important game once in a while. Then his talents can be better evaluated in a team concept.
  20. Despite the Dl stints and carefully managed pitch counts, Sale has delivered 29 innings since thwe A-S break in 7 starts ( 4.1 average). If this was a fake-out move to confuse his playoff opposition then it has been masterful. The reality is much more like Chris Sale has a chronic shoulder inflammation problem exacerbated by his normally high torque, violent delivery . I believe he is hurt but will try to gut it out based on his competitive personality. The results will speak for themselves. I would give it a 33% chance he pitches one game in the off season, 33% he makes 2 starts, 33% that he dominates and wins 2 games, and 1% that he is actually fine and going the rope-a-dope route. I think there is a 50% + chance that he will have some type of corrective surgery procedure on the shoulder this off season and they will keep him sidelined until about the A-S break in 2019.
  21. IMO the BP needs to include the following (Assume Rodriguez is the 4th starter) : Eovaldi because his FB my help in one inning or he could do long relief Kimbrel because there may be a 3 out save opportunity, otherwise forget him. Brasier because he has earned the spot Poyner because Cora needs one LH, and I trust Poyner slightly more than Robby Scott. Consideration given to B. Johnson but we'll see after tonight. Wright because he offers a real change of pace and has been effective lately Workman in spite of the tendency for HR balls Barnes because I need someone to blame for being a HS pitcher. Go with Pearce or Moreland, Swihart, Holt , Nunez, Vasquez on the bench.
  22. Been travelling overseas for awhile, so missed most of September except for box scores/summaries. I will say that I hope we have to match up in the ALDS with NYY rather than A's. Two reasons, first is travel not being a factor. Second and more important to me, the team needs to show it can beat NY when it counts . It would be far more enjoyable than travel coast to coast to get after a young talented A's team. Beat the Yankees and get ready for the next challenge. If you can't beat the Yanks, then go home again wondering how to fix the pitching.
  23. Drop the DH , lol. Let Porcello hit in Fenway.
  24. That was a great win in Atlanta, and maybe Oakland can nail down the NYY'ers for us. The magic # goes to 17 in the interim.
  25. Amazing how these hitters struggle early on vs. starters of all kinds, but eat the BP's lunch in the 8th and 9th.
