  1. Between the air currents, the turf, and the mound, this may end up a 17-15 game.
  2. This may be a 6 hour game. I wonder how many fans will stick it out. It could be embarrassing
  3. That's a first. It must seem like a pleasure.
  4. No no, he's not a troll. He's a closet Boston fan like Yankee announcer Suzyn Waldman.
  5. I read that the MLB is giving Boston 6-7 million for these games, which at least doubles the money we pay out in salaries per two games. What truly sucks is that we lose two home Yankee games, the most valuable home games on our schedule. And gives them an advantage in a year when we can't afford to give them one.
  6. I would go after Marcus Stroman. I don't know Toronto's needs, but this guy would be the perfect fit for us. And if all four of our present starters stay the course, we can use Eovaldi out of the bullpen down the stretch and into the playoffs.
  7. I would say 5 teams... Oakland and Texas, Cleveland, TB, and Ourselves. Two in and three out. Two in for one game, that is. So, one in and four out. (Minny might not be a shoe-in) I still think we win 92-94 games, but there are moments when I doubt my near original (day 10 or so into the season) prediction. I doubt because of our terrible home record--very unexpected. P.S. I think that the Yanks, by buying up so many good relief pitchers, not only helped themselves a great deal, but made possible all their late inning comebacks against teams left without relievers. Not a bad strategy.
  8. The loss of Eovaldi was huge, because for the first time in years we went into the season without a 6th starter/long reliever. Result: a 4-man rotation which was pretty damn weak early on and is presently the strong point of the team. (Question: Did we overuse Eovaldi in the playoffs??) On the offensive side, the lack of hitting and timely hitting by Betts and Benintendi is one big difference from last season. But I'd be truly surprised if we don't make the playoffs with from 92-94 wins.
  9. Not a bad outing for Shawaryn (how say it?) after a very long wait to pitch in his first game. 4.5 era which is about what the sox team era is, and only one hit. Welcome big Mike.
  10. What I think tonight is what I thought 5 days ago: The Yanks are going to win the East, and we are going to make the playoffs and play either Oakland or TB in the play-in game. So, we keep everyone, unless we can work out a trade which improves things.
  11. Well, I think the MLB season is too long... the NBA also. So, I have a hard time blaming Cora for his resting philosophy. BUT back in the 1950s (oh they were oh so un-athletic compared to today's players) starters would finish games routinely, sometimes with 130-155 pitches thrown. So, what we're talking about here is not so much resting as protecting an investment. This may not be Cora's decision, but the owner's. And this policy has actually made pitchers tire much more easily than they did back in that out-of-shape era when their determination to finish what they had started worked out well for them.
  12. Devers gets punched out by a pitch considerably out of the zone. When it rains, it pours.
  13. We need Chapman to walk 3 guys and throw a couple wild pitches... and a bloop single.
  14. It's discouraging to get behind this Yankee team. I would rather face their starters any day than their line up of relievers. The whole idea of a rally seems like a mere fantasy.
  15. Hard to find? Not with modern surveillance devices.
  16. Even the Yankee announcers are wondering why we didn't challenge it. Chavis controlled the ball with his foot still on the base.
  17. Re: trad. stopper in 9th vs. best hitters inning. It's funny for all these years I've heard that the reason there is an actual stopper is that the 9th inning is the pressure inning and only certain pitchers match up to that final inning. Suddenly this 9th inning is portable, so now you can have your less heroic reliever on in the actual 9th inning, which is often no longer the pressure inning. Got it? Who's on first? I think that when you jerk your best reliever around from 6-9th inning, what you're doing is jerking all the relievers around so that none have a natural position or expectation. Each becomes more of a puppet to be yanked and pulled by the hands of the manager.
  18. Why can't there be an MLB rule that when players are placed on the 60-day IL or are out for the season that their salary cap hit be dropped until their return. Not that the Sox with their 240m roster should need this, but it seems fair for all teams. I guess the signed replacement player would at term's end then have to join or re-join the FA pool or be traded. (On second thought, this really only helps the rich teams who are in the luxury tax brackets, so maybe not such a good idea--yet fair somehow)
  19. That's my sentiment too.
  20. Is that true? I'm a bit surprised.
  21. Well, we need relief pitchers because our starters average about 5 1/3 innings--when they pitch, which isn't all that often. Why are these next five games starting to weigh on me, when on Monday I was looking forward to good things. Maybe it's the gloomy northeast weather, or maybe the loss of Moreland, maybe because both Cleveland and the Yanks are tough outs, and we seem a little thin.
  22. Bad timing... just before a big 4-game series at Yankee Stadium I had already had 3 homers penciled in for him. What a drag. I guess Holt plays second... maybe he'll tap out a couple of blooping line-hugging homers.
  23. Wouldn't Brock Holt (lower salary, more effective) be easier to trade for pitching than Nunez? Holt to the Angels for one of their relief depth guys.
  24. 55-60% chance of rain for the rest of the night. Meanwhile, GO PADRES.. one more inning
