  1. That is certainly true. But I was right about Ramirez, Sandoval, and Price, and I'm sure the Sox knew more than me in these cases too. (Belichick may at times make a roster mistake, but he NEVER overpays, even with a safety net under him in more ways to rectify such a mistake, and he has way more chances to make this error).
  2. I've been sold on Sale up till about now, but I would be nervous about even giving him 100m for 4 years. God, I wish we knew how to develop young pitchers... cuz we always end up in that overpay position. What I'm saying is that I have no reason in the world to trust Chris Sale's health and durability--except maybe for his strong will.
  3. Boggs, Betts, and Benns can hit 1,2, or 3 any day for me. I wouldn't truly argue against any one of these lineup placements. But in the NL I would not want Betts leading off--injury a little more likely, and he would be leading off more times per game as in 1.9 over 1.4 (my estimate)
  4. I recall that he walked a lot. (what I say pertains more to the NL, of course) As in Pete Rose.
  5. A lead off hitter should have minimum .360 on base per. and be a speed merchant. My problem with Mookie leading off is a fear of injury... you don't want your top stars sliding into second all season long. So, another quality in your speedy lead off hitter is durability and toughness. Someone who can steal 30 bases and can go from first to third (smart base runner).
  6. Not encouraging since the season begins in like 11 days.
  7. Wright went from the All Star team in '16 (i think) to a pesky injury, to beating on his wife, Shannon, and now in his "comeback year" to a peds violation. Yeah, this may be worse than losing the World Series, so I hope Shannon has a few close friends to turn to, and is on high alert.
  8. The relief staff looks considerably more problematic now. But this will give a couple of these off-season vet pickups a good shot at making the roster. And perhaps surprising. Yet, I think the bullpen may very well be what costs us most as a winning team.
  9. And at some of the trades projected by many on this board for less than formidable players.
  10. Machado could be a Yankee in 5 years since he has an opt-out. And with he new collective bargaining coming up, he could very well kiss 150m good-bye. I hear that the Padres may also get Harper. No more San Diego teams to compete with them, so they want a big time baseball team there.
  11. I still don't get why Vasquez, who has a higher salary than Sandy Leon, would be traded (see poll choice) while Leon would not be because his salary is too high. ?? That's why I thought both should have been poll choices. And why I would have chosen Leon traded and Swihart becomes the backup.
  12. Yup, this is what the poll leaves out. I would select this one.
  13. I have no problem with the signing. I'm sure he made it out of some sort of re-hab program, or the league would have said NO. But most importantly, in terms of Boston is that Cora knows him well, played with him with the Mets, and knows his character. Every drug user is different, and I'd much rather bring in someone with a history of drug use or ped use than a player with a history of wife battery or sexual abuse. The first is victimless, the latter is anything but that. Consider the first, boycott the latter.
  14. I would not want to see either Eovaldi or Price in the pen during the season. Both are great pitchers who have had problems with consistency (either recently or always). I say: let them do what they do best. Besides, starters have more status (pride, dignity) and to fool with that, except in the playoffs, could spell trouble.
  15. I think I'd rather we be consistently among the top ten spenders than to be the highest spender. But, given the Yankees long plutocrat reign, I agree that 2-3 or 3-4 years at the top is satisfactory. After all, we are in the same division with NY... gotta compete and gotta work on a good balance of youth and vets to keep the cap within reason.
  16. Exactly. The Steinbrenner years were ugly years for the AL and the MLB both in terms of a "level playing field" and crude, mob-like posturings from "the Boss." Thanks for pointing out the current elephant in the room. I guess we can say that a lot of our extra salary consist of dumb long-term contracts, but old George could have many times said the same.
  17. But the best way to lose money is to exceed the top threshold. So, I think the orders are to stay below... make trades if you need to but stay below. We'll see soon enough.
  18. That's my take. And I would add that, given our starters often failed to get past the 5th inning and rarely past the 6th, relief may be as critical for us as for any team in the league--including Tampa Bay. (we averaged 5.4 innings per starter outing. NY was 5.3)
  19. As I recall it, it was the lineup that was the best ever--and that didn't materialize. But Betances in the bullpen did materialize, and the pen did pretty much pan out as expected.
  20. So, the Yanks bull pen has: Chapman, Betances, Ottavino, Britton, Kahnle, Green, Holder. Am I missing someone? I think any one of these guys could at least vie for our 7th and 8th hitting hold guys. And the first three would suffice for the stopper we don't have. ??? Anyway, to say the Yankees have an advantage, in this important category, would be an understatement, don't you think. Talk about overkill.
  21. This is the dumb fan in me speaking, but I wonder about Steve Wright as a closer... if, he's back in form. I think he could be more shut-down than anyone on our current (unfinished, I assume) roster. And he certainly would pose real problems for opposing lineups. As to his consistency, I think it might be able to at least match Kimbrel if he's as good as he once was (pre-injury). And, of course, this move would not at all detract from a 6-man rotation.
  22. Ah, yes I recall. As I see the name Ramos, I realize I wrote Romo's name as Ramos. I meant sign Allen and Romo.
  23. I would sign Allen and Romo to one-year deals. Or, make a trade for a bigger name reliever or a young guy with a big upside. Whatever happened to the Mets need for one of our catchers. Or did the Mets sign a free agent catcher?
  24. In NFL football games the networks are starting to use split screens during short breaks shared between ads and live filed views. What really angers me tho is that right after an obviously serious injury, even before they can even identify the player, there's often an immediate abrupt cutaway to 2-3 minutes of ads. All that time you can't help wondering the actual state of that body lying on the field both in terms of his health, and the impact on the game. It's really more cruel than football itself.
  25. Satchel Paige should be the President of the Suitcase Hall of Fame... and an inducted member too. That would give him membership in at least 3 Hall of Fames.
