  1. I'm not giving up, but we have to think the all-aboard Yanks are better than the half-Yanks we've seen in the first third of the season. However, if we can take 3-4 this weekend in NY, that would tell the baseball world that we are still around.
  2. The season is now one-third over. 29-25 not bad at all after those opening series out west. Question marks with the starters, but when they pitch, they look plenty good, and the line-up has come all the way around to where they should be (which helps the weak defense links) I expect the playoffs with 93-94 wins, but most likely we will have to accept the play-in game with perhaps TB or Oakland. Perhaps our critical focus will be on out-winning either of these two to get that pivotal home advantage.
  3. He died of same illness that Robin Williams had. A bad form of Parkinson's. One of my favorite players from that period.
  4. Devers, Chavis, and Vasquez. Pleasant surprises. And we have 6 pos. starters with OBPs from .362 to.405 and yet are only 27-25 and face Verlander tomorrow. We got to get all our good stuff working together before the upcoming Yankee series.
  5. I think the loss of Detroit, Toronto, and Baltimore as the major players they recently were is a big reason why I think the road is so much easier for the Sox, Yanks, and Astros. And this could be one of the reasons for our slow start (confidence) and for our decision to not break the bank. If we can glide into the playoffs, why over expend like we did in last year's playoffs, driving our starters to the brink (one reason we may not have Eovaldi right now).
  6. Yes, but that team won't bump out Houston, NY, or Boston unless, as I say, the Sox get injuries and refuse to sign anyone (rely only on minors roster). NY and Houston can withstand injuries because they have cap space to sign replacements, so they're in. Oakland Minny and TB I already mentioned so what team, apart from these, is the surprise team??? But more to the point is that the AL has more bad teams this year than in recent memory. I'm sorry to say it, but so many of these rosters seem closer to minor league caliber than major. Baltimore, Toronto, Chicago, KC, Seattle should be almost automatic wins. And we play Baltimore and Toronto 36 times Yawn. I'm ready for the post season right now.
  7. That's exactly my read. At least fangraph has the odds at 77%, but fivethirtyeight at 65% seems outright dumb. As far as I'm concerned 3 of the 5 teams are already in with only the other two slots up for some competition. Boston, NY, and Houston are in. Cleveland, Minny, TB... maybe Oakland can compete. I just don't see any other team in the running. Unless the Sox are hit by injuries and refuse to spend another cent on their roster...I say 97% chance.
  8. You got a point, and of course Sale, a superb as he is and has been lately, is facing a much tougher lineup than the one Miley is facing--today.
  9. At worst, there will be brief delays... most likely only this first one, though. The rains in the northeast corner are very scattered, so no worry.
  10. I agree, and was about to make the same point. (we know both these guys well, and we no the GAP between them)
  11. I think we can skip the blown saves, if they are so open to interpretation and context, and just look at the 11 saves. That's what's important. What it says is that we have two very inexperienced, and not particularly effective, closers. That is not good, but I suppose one can make the point, that it is not necessarily bad.
  12. Failed Royals right-hander Gil Meche walked away after the 2010 season "he felt it was unfair to collect $12 million when he simply could not play. Meche had already earned $52 million in his career, but the decision was either generous, foolish, stupid, ethical, or moral." (McNair, Fansided) No such luck with Pedroia. Probably already discussed several times over, but can he DH for a year or two?? Or play left field?
  13. Mitch becomes the first Red Sox in the top 5 AL lists. 11 homers ties him with three others for 5th. Usually the Red Sox dominate these offense stats. But no matter, we're now onward and upward.
  14. Great defense makes good pitchers very good, and weaker pitchers good; it also demoralizes a lot of opposing hitters. The only question is does a poor defensive player hit enough to make up for his errors? If he does, pitchers just have to suck up the errors/weak defense.... and put up with a higher ERA but probably not fewer wins.
  15. I would like to give a hug (I know I'm breaking the rule) to Betts, Bradley, Vasquez, Price, Velasquez, Bogaerts, Devers--and Alex Cora for refusing to visit a man I have detested for 5 decades.
  16. This was my chief concern about this team... only 5 real starters and 4 of them somewhat or very injury-prone. And Porcello, the horse, is due for an injury too. Two are already down. Who backs them up when there's no more money in the bank?? The Yanks are in a much better position to deal with this both in terms of the cap, and in terms of Minor League backups.
  17. Let's see if the new Minny team (Cleveland now in trouble) can finally win a game or two in the Big Apple--against a much weakened nemesis. Theyv'e played so wretchedly there in recent years. Maybe this will be their statement weekend.
  18. Actually, Lopez' stats are almost exactly equal overall to Sale's stats.
  19. I agree. That's why my assessment of things will count more afer one-third the season or 54 games. We have a very favorable schedule coming up, which is another reason to wait. But both player and team performance can only be measured over time, because there are way too many variables in each and every game. If we are 22-32 at the third mark, it's time to get critiical; if we are 27-27, that's not bad at all because of the dominant number of weak or under .500 teams in the AL. (The only teams I have any fear of are NY, Houston, and Cleveland--all other teams are iffy at best) I say favorable schedule coming up, but to me the whole season is more or less a favorable schedule for the 4 top teams.
  20. I think that Tampa, Seattle, and Oakland will make waves if they improve themselves at the trade deadline. And one will probably be the 5th team in. But none are intimidating, and Tampa is going to blow out their pitching staff if they stick to that relief format (they may have many replacements in the minors, however) I just don't think the AL is has many challenges. Even a western swing (Houston excepted) is not at all daunting. Remember Texas and California a few years back... tough challenges. Detroit is in a "bridge" year which means cheap vets on one year contracts. Toronto, forget it. A pal went to see the white sox play in April and the inflated attendance was 850 people. Yawn. I think both the players and I want to just jump to the playoffs. Who need the long, perhaps more boring than ever, season.
  21. I've indulged in a couple worries, but I tell myself I won't be concerned till one-third of the season is in the books. If we are 22-32 in the first third, then I would think uphill battle. But what I find most encouraging is that there's only 4 good teams, I think, in the AL: Boston, NY, Houston, Cleveland. Maybe the team understands this, and isn't much concerned about the current record. I mean what other teams are intimidating? I think these early records are pretty insignificant for these reasons. As to the game thread negativity, a couple of the worse offenders seem to be half-drunk or drunk. They are the pits, but some regular guys still follow their lead and heap venom on their own players. These guys take generalizing the particular to the uttermost extreme--effin off for the sake of effin off. It's not about release at all, but at times is actually violent. If you act this way in words, you do the same in reality.
  22. It's too late now to make Sale a closer. No closer makes 29 million a year. So, it's Sale or set sail.
  23. 7 games back of TB even though we just beat them 3 in a row an won 4 straight. The Yanks with the very worst lineup they will have all season are winning once again... what will they be later??
  24. Rain tomorrow too, but it may be spotty so both games should be played. I'm surprised they're making this game up so quickly this early in the season.
  25. Who's replacing him in the starting rotation? Velazquez? Wish Wright were still around.
